This superb 17th century Dutch Golden Age oil painting has been more recently reattributed to Abraham Begeyn by Dr Marijke C. de Kinkelder formerly of the RKD - Netherlands Institute for Art History. Painted circa 1640 it is an Italianate wooded river landscape with drovers and their herd crossing a river with a watchtower beyond. Begeyn was one of the many 17th-century Dutch and Flemish painters to embrace the Italianate style, populating their decidedly non-Dutch, mountainous landscapes with rustic travellers and picturesque ruins bathed in warm, Mediterranean light. It has Begeyn's characteristic brightly lit cattle and grouping of figures, similar to a comparable painting in the Lichtenstein Princely Collections. The brushwork and details are superb. One can see the influence of his teacher Nicholaes Berchem (1620-1683) and the typical golden glow of the Golden Age painters. This is a stunning 17th century Golden Age oil painting and an excellent example of Begeyn's work. Provenance: With Koetser Gallery, Zurich. Private Collection (Rhine region). Note: Begeyn was one of the many 17th-century Dutch and Flemish painters to embrace the Italianate style, populating their decidedly non-Dutch, mountainous landscapes with rustic travellers and picturesque ruins bathed in warm, Mediterranean light. He is thought to have studied under Nicolaes Berchem (1620-1683), a pioneer of this genre of landscape painting, and travelled extensively to Italy, London and later to Germany in 1688, where he lived out his days as court painter to Frederick III, Elector of Brandenburg (later Frederick I, King of Prussia). The present work was previously thought to be the work of Jacob de Heusch (1656-1701), but has been more recently reattributed to Abraham Begeyn by Dr Marijke C. de Kinkelder formerly of the RKD - Netherlands Institute for Art History. A comparable scene, which also includes Begeyn's characteristic brightly lit cattle and a similar figure group, was sold at Christie's Amsterdam, 18 November 2015, lot 110. Another can be found in the Liechtenstein Princely Collections (no.GE 290). Condition. Oil on canvas, image size 21 inches by 18 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a beautiful gilt frame, 28 inches by 25 inches and in good condition. Abraham Begeyn (c. 1637 Leiden - 11 June 1697 Berlin), was a Dutch Golden Age painter. Begeyn was born in Leiden. Though perhaps known mostly for his Italianate landscapes and cattle in the manner of Nicolaes Pietersz Berchem, Begyn was a highly skilled painter active in many genres, who travelled widely. According to the RKD, Begeyn's earliest known work is from 1653, though he was first accepted into the Guild of St. Luke in Leiden in 1655. He stopped paying dues in 1667, because he set off for a trip to Italy. He is registered in Rome and Naples from 1659–1660. In the rampjaar or disaster year, of 1672, he is registered in Amsterdam, and after that he lived in London, where he painted at Ham House, Surrey, together with Willem van de Velde the Younger (1633–1707) and Dirck van Bergen...

Claude Venard was a notable exponent of the French mid-century post-Cubist movement. He was born to bourgeois parents from Burgogne in Paris, on March 21, 1913. At the age of 17, he enrolled and attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, but remained for only two days, not adhering to the school's academic style. Instead, he spent the following six years at the École des Arts Appliqués, taking evening classes and embracing the contemporary Parisian art scene, all the while becoming recognized in its circles. Not able to support himself as an artist, by 1936 he found employment as a restorer at the Louvre, further honing his artistic skills. Paris of the period was dominated by an art trend that strongly favored abstraction. Following a group show at the Galerie Billet-Worms in 1935, art critic Waldemar George declared: "Let's be young again! Painting is not dead… Its course has not stopped. Forces Nouvelles is born." This painting, by listed artist James King Bonnar (1884-1961), is a lovely scene of Edgartown Harbor, Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. It dates to ca 1960, towards the end of his career. There is a lot of action and detail presented, as the harbor is busy, likely in full summer season. The variety of boats, men working them and an abundance of rigging fill the composition. Dreamy figurative seascape of two ladies on the beach wading in shallow waters, depicted in a beautiful tonal palette of soft cyan and lavender hues, by Alan David Cours (American, b. 1950). The subtle reflections of the women in the water add a touch of detail to the almost abstracted blend of colors that makes up the water and sky, and tiny sails dot the horizon line to imply space. Cours' background as an abstract artist is apparent in this scene, which is grounded in reality only by use of the most important details. The artist allows the mood of the colors to come to the forefront, and any unnecessary details, like the faces of the women or delineation of successive waves in the water, to fall away. Signed "A. He remained there until 1972, when he graduated from Kenyon College with Highest Honors in art. In 1974, Cours moved to New York to accept a grant from the Whitney Museum of American Art. He subsequently obtained an M.F.A. in painting from Hunter College in New York. Originally trained as an abstract artist, Cours became interested in American Impressionism after viewing the work of A. Gisson. He became an informal apprenticeship with Gisson which lasted over ten years. Today, Cours’ style bears evidence of Gisson’s influence but has a delicate touch which is uniquely suited to his vision of our world. He is deeply interested in exploring the power of color to evoke light and mood. His subjects are landscapes, beach scenes, florals, architectural scenes, nudes, and still life. The work of A. David Cours has been exhibited throughout most of the United States. He has become a very successful artist and his work is in both large and small collections in the United States and abroad. “A. During this tour, Bale was promoted to Captain and retired from the army in 1881 with the rank of major.
