About the Item
Selvas Negras #1 is a unique pencil and charcoal on canvas diptych painting by contemporary artist Calo Carratalá. Dimensions are 212 × 656 cm (83.5 × 258.3 in), composed by two panels measuring 212 cm x 282 cm (83.46 x 111,02 in) (right) and 212 cm x 374 cm (83,46 x 147,24 in) (left).
The artwork is signed, sold unframed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
The Amazonian rainforest is depicted in this work by Spanish artist Calo Carratalá, who has visited it on numerous expeditions in Brazil, Peru, and Ecuador. Using his own experiences and the feelings the location evokes, Calo Carratalá recreates the landscape. He has lived in a forest and has fully assimilated it, as seen in his paintings and drawings. Without explicitly saying so, the artist questions how we view nature and the conflicting emotions it can elicit, such as fascination and fear.

Contemporary painter Calo Carratalá was born in 1959 near Valencia, Spain, and specialises in figurative paintings of natural landscapes. He has travelled widely to destinations from the Amazon to Norway and developed a romantic view of nature, extolling its beauty and the power of the elements that make it up. Travel is at the heart of the artist’s creative process: he immerses himself in the places he visits in order to paint them.

Calo Carratalá
Artist Calo Carratalá takes a contemporary view of nature in his stirring large-format drawings and landscape paintings. He maintains that we don't view it the way we once did and, in contrast to the way that Renaissance painters saw landscapes as depictions of places that had yet to be discovered, Carratalá sees the natural world as something to be protected and not merely admired.
From his snow-topped cabins hidden deep in the woods to sunlit tropical beaches, Carratalá’s scenes are wholly inviting for viewers. Each of his paintings reflects the majesty of nature and gives us a sense of its innate significance.
Carratalá was born and raised in Spain and began painting when he was very young. In 1980, he began his art studies at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Carlos in Valencia and finished his studies in 2000 at the Spanish Academy in Rome.
Carratalá made a name for himself in the art world over the subsequent few years, securing many commissions and showing in numerous galleries around Spain and greater Europe. In 2010, he received a request from the city of Alicante in his native country to show his work at a metro station. In 2019, he exhibited his art at Museo del Ruso in Alarcón.
