About the Item

An idyllic scene with a view from the sand dunes out to an azure blue sea under a billowing sky. Daniel Sherrin (1868-1940) A seascape from the sand dunes Signed Oil on canvas 16 x 24 inches without the frame 22 x 20 inches with the frame Daniel Sherrin was born in Brentwood, Essex, England, in 1868. He was the son of John Sherrin, R.I. (1819–1896), a noted still-life painter. Daniel trained under his father and later became a pupil of B.W. Leader, a prominent landscape artist associated with the "Williams" family. He resided for a time on England's East Coast near Whitstable and, while primarily a landscape artist, also painted scenes along the Suffolk and Norfolk shores. In his early career, Sherrin created maritime paintings resembling the styles of Thomas Somerscales and early Montague Dawson. However, he eventually focused on landscapes, the genre for which he gained the most recognition. He occasionally painted under the pseudonyms "L. Richards" and "Horace Gallon." Sherrin's artwork was frequently used for book illustrations, including a piece titled *In the Highlands*, depicting highland cattle by a loch, featured in Thomas D. Murphy's *British Highways and Byways from a Motor Car* (1908). He was commissioned by King George V to paint Sandringham, a work that still hangs in Buckingham Palace. During World War I, Sherrin contributed significantly to recruitment efforts for Kitchener's Army by designing posters, which are now preserved in the archives of the Imperial War Museum. His son, Reginald Daniel Sherrin (1891–1971), followed in his footsteps as an artist, specializing in watercolor depictions of moorland and coastal scenes.
