About the Item

Saturday Morning has translucent jewel tones and is beautifully painted. Done during the early 1960's it was a favorite subject for the artist to depict boats coming into harbor as the artist grew up along the Connecticut shoreline. The artist has used rich tones but there is a wonderful sense of early day sunlight in the painting. He used a technique at this time of applying strokes with a brush and then rubbing off some of the paint with a rag dipped in turpentine to create the special effect of light. It is painted on a board called masonite which was his preferred material. A nice size painting to put along a buffet, long console table or in a hall. The artist had a lot of success in these years and was productive. He had many one-man exhibitions throughout his lifetime including at Hammer Galleries in New York. He was inspired by the Impressionists and at this period - by the Fauve artists as well as the German Expressionists. Dimension of artwork inside the frame: 20 x 48 inches The frame is a high quality leafed 22 karat gold that has been silvered and has some patination. Black lacquer to the inside and outside edge of the frame. Not a stock moulding but a custom made frame for the piece. Signed: Purdy lower right

Head to Sea, Modernist sailing scene
By Ralph Eugene Della-Volpe
Located in Greenwich, CT
A vibrant and yet romantic sailing scene which was a favorite series by Della-Volpe. His compelling colorist approach has made his works desirable as he was one of the few artists post-war to be representative in style like Milton Avery and Wolf Kahn. Head to Sea has the hallmark intense and lovely coloration for which Della-Volpe is known. He came out of Abstract Expressionism in the New York school but then pivoted, like Milton Avery to representational, colorist work. The frame is a silvered gold leaf float frame of quality and has a rubbed, antiqued surface...
