About the Item

This monumental oil on canvas by noted 20th-century Denver modernist Edward Marecak (1919–1993) captures a vivid, semi-abstract interpretation of City Park in Denver, Colorado. Measuring an impressive 52 ½ x 81 x 1 ¼ inches, the painting showcases a dynamic arrangement of stylized trees, strolling figures, and a tranquil pond rendered in rich, expressive colors. The composition radiates Marecak’s characteristic vibrancy and complexity, with layered patterns and symbolic forms woven into the landscape. The work is presented as a wrapped canvas, unframed and ready for hanging, making an impactful statement in any modern or contemporary art collection. Provenance: Estate of the artist, Edward Marecak Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 52 ½ x 81 x 1 ¼ inches About the Artist: A highly original voice in mid-century American modernism, Edward Marecak was deeply influenced by his Slovak heritage, classical mythology, music, and folk art traditions. Though known primarily within Colorado during his lifetime, his intricate style and prolific output—spanning painting, printmaking, ceramics, and textiles—have made him a significant figure in the American regional modernist movement. Born to Slovakian immigrant parents near Cleveland, Ohio, Marecak studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art, Cranbrook Academy, and the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, eventually settling in Denver. There, he taught for 25 years while developing a unique artistic vocabulary rooted in personal symbolism, mythology, and ritual. Marecak’s mature works are often filled with layered imagery and symbolic figures, often referencing Slovak folktales, opera, and mythology, all depicted through a vivid and highly textural lens. He worked across media and embraced experimentation, creating works that are at once mystical, playful, and deeply personal. His paintings can be found in prominent public collections including the Denver Art Museum, Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art, and Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center.

Ghost Town, Colorado Prospector Scene by Harold Skene, Vintage Western Painting
By Harold Vincent Skene
Located in Denver, CO
“Ghost Town” by Harold Skene (1883–1978) is a striking vintage oil painting that captures the haunting beauty of Colorado’s mining past. In this evocative Western landscape, a lone prospector and his pack mule stand amid the weathered ruins of an abandoned mountain town. The late summer or early autumn setting is rendered in rich, earthy tones—golden yellows, sage greens, dusty pinks, and soft blues—creating a vivid sense of atmosphere and place. Painted in oil on board and signed by the artist at the lower right, this work is also titled and dated on the verso. It reflects Skene’s architectural training and his artistic roots in the early 20th-century Colorado art scene. The painting is presented in a classic mahogany frame, with outer dimensions measuring 30 x 35.5 x 2.75 inches; image size is 24 x 30 inches. A graduate of Harvard’s School of Architecture, Harold Skene studied at the Denver Art Academy and the Broadmoor Art Academy and was an assistant to noted Western artist Allen Tupper True...
