About the Item

A very dear and special work by Francis Luis Mora done while he was in Spain. An important trip early in his career, this is a gem of American Impressionism in technique and history. Also - this work is in its original condition and framing - all of which has been very well preserved. Provenance: Rafael Guastavino III, purchased in Barcelona while on a trip there in 1909. Signed lower right The panel size: 7.5 x 9.25 inches Private collection James Black, Florida by inheritance Mora’s life-long artistic goal was to adapt the techniques of the Spanish Old Masters into American modern painting. Mora frequently traveled to Spain to visit his extended family, and to paint. In fact, Mora would be referred to as one of the American painters who would return, over and over, to Spanish influences and subject matter in his paintings. Mora frequently traveled to Spain to visit his extended family, and to paint. Mora made a trip to Europe around 1908 after he married and he and his wife stayed a little over a year in Europe, primarily in Spain. On this particular trip, Mora met Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida. It is evidenced in Mora’s work that he would have been impressed with this great virtuoso’s brushwork and use of light within his Impressionist aesthetic. This beach scene of a fishing community is both a delightful and superb example of Impressionist painting along with a window into an important year in Mora’s life. The beach scene, featuring an array of Llüats, or fishing boats notable for their laurel leaf shape is executed in quickly but well placed, expert strokes laid down with no clumsiness of composition or placement. The color palette was surely inspired by the light and scene before him, but his choices are appealing to the eye. A painting that vividly transports us to another time and place in an effortless manner.
