Several spectator vessels are shown on the water; including; between the two racers; a large excursion tug flying the burgee of Boston’s Eastern Yacht Club in support of Puritan. Puritan won the race. Frederick Tordoff American 1939 - present Frederick Tordoff was born in Whitley Bay, on the northeast coast of England. The area has a rich maritime heritage and Fred sketched the local scenes and landmarks. After a stint in the Royal Air Force, Tordoff studied Marine Radio and Electronics at the Kingston-Upon-Hull College. Hull had a thriving school of marine art, and after visits to art galleries and the Hull Whaling Museum, Tordoff was motivated to paint the keels, sloops and whale ships that plied the waterways in the great age of sail. Tordoff joined the Cunard Steamship Company as a Radio & Electronics Officer and traveled the world. He continued to paint during these long sea voyages, and eventually began to exhibit his work at local art groups and galleries in northern England. The artist currently resides in New Jersey and continues to specialize in marine and sailing subjects, including the Hudson River and the Nantucket and New Bedford whaling fleets. His paintings are in collections in throughout Great Britain, Europe and the United States.

"Serene Sail"
By Warren W. Sheppard
Located in Southampton, NY
This oil on canvas painting was done by the American artist, Warren Sheppard. Signed twice lower left. One signature over another. See signatures photo's. Circa 1920 to 1930. Recently lightly cleaned and gold leaf frame custom made for the painting. Overall 27 by 37 inches. Some craquelure; mainly in sky. Otherwise, good condition. A student of Dutch marine artist, Mauritz de Haas, Warren Sheppard built two successful careers around his love of the sea: marine painting and yacht designing. He was born in Greenwich, New Jersey, a town on the Delaware River below Philadelphia, which has been associated with ships and shipping since the earliest Colonial times. His father was a sea captain and the young Sheppard took many voyages with his father to make artistic studies. He learned perspective drawing at Cooper Union in New York City in addition to his studies with de Haas. In 1879, he spent four months sketching Mediterranean port cities including Gibraltar, Genoa, Naples and Messina in Sicily. Between 1888 and 1893, he also studied painting in Venice and Paris. By the time he was in his mid-thirties, he had established himself as a successful illustrator and painter. The yachts he painted were the most lavish of his day, owned by the wealthiest of men. He was an expert in the design and rigging of ships of present and earlier times. His work was highly regarded for its authenticity as well as its artistic merit.Sheppard was also an expert navigator and sailed a number of famous yachts in races. Twice he was to command Tamerlane when it won the New York to Bermuda run. His book, Practical Navigation, was used for many years by the United States Naval Academy...

PURITAN vs GENESTA, America's Cup 1885
By Edward Moran
Located in Costa Mesa, CA
This impressive painting by Edward Moran does justice to the epic America’s Cup Challenge of 1885. Moran’s point of view captures the day’s enormity to the world’s yacht racers and designers. This account portrays PURITAN’s second and decisive victory of the match on the 40-mile course, 20 miles leeward from the Sandy Hook Lightship and back. PURITAN reached the line a scant 1 minute 38 seconds in front, the closest margin of victory to date. Well publicized and awaited on both sides of the Atlantic, the race held the public’s interest while knowledgeable yachtsmen waited to see if Boston’s Edward Burgess had innovated the centerboard sloop design to a degree capable of holding off the challenge of a true English cutter. GENESTA was designed by John Beavor-Webb, for her owner, Sir Richard Sutton...
