George Curtis
Polar Sea Landscape

1867

About the Item

George Curtis transcended the typical Hudson River School style with this painting. While in the Hudson River School, painters often created warmer landscapes of the American countryside, this painting confronts that style with a colder, bleak tone of a polar seascape. This painting uses monochromatic colors with immense detail to show a jagged iceberg in the background, with a shipwreck in the foreground. This serves as the classic theme of struggle between life and death in the Hudson River School. The detail of the sail and ropes in the foreground leaves a haunting tone for the viewer of the cold scene. While Curtis had many talents and specialties as an artist, this painting shows his keen sense of attention to detail that is needed in such bold landscape scenes. This painting is in excellent condition and comes signed lower left with frame.
