About the Item
La Plage de Cannes is a striking example of Lebasque’s mature Post‑Impressionist style: serene yet subtly vibrant, intimate yet expansive. The painting elegantly balances compositional clarity with a delicate palette, capturing a moment of leisure infused with the quiet bliss of Mediterranean light. It remains emblematic of Lebasque’s lifelong pursuit—to translate the joy of everyday life into luminous, harmonious art.
The scene captures an elegant beachfront veranda overlooking Cannes bay. Under the soft shade of awnings, elegantly dressed figures - men, women and perhaps children - are seated, engaged in leisurely conversation or observing the Mediterranean horizon. Beyond the veranda’s railings, a sparkling blue sea extends, dotted with a small sailboat. The composition is open and airy; Lebasque's brushwork is loose yet refined, with pastel hues of pinks, blues, and muted greens blending harmoniously to evoke sunny Riviera life.
Lebasque is celebrated for his luminous, warm color palette; soft pinks, blues, mauves, that bathe figures in Mediterranean light, creating a glowing atmosphere. The work melds a Fauvist flatness of form and color with impressionist brush techniques. Faces are depicted with minimal detail, drawing expressive power from posture and setting.
Known as 'the painter of joy and light', Lebasque earned acclaim for his harmonious compositions that radiate serenity and warmth. After settling permanently in the South of France in 1924, Lebasque’s palette grew even lighter and more joyful, reflecting his love for sun-drenched domestic scenes and southern landscapes.

Henri Lebasque
Henri Lebasque (25 September 1865 – 7 August 1937) was a French post-impressionist painter. He was born at Champigné (Maine-et-Loire). Lebasque was a founding member of the Salon d'Automne in 1903 with his friend Henri Matisse. Two years later, a group of artists exhibited there including Georges Rouault, André Derain, Édouard Vuillard, and Matisse. Lebasque also became friends with artists such as Gustave Rouault, Raoul Dufy, Louis Valtat, and Henri Manguin, the last of whom introduced Lebasque to the South of France. His time in South of France would lead to a radical transformation in Lebasque’s paintings, changing his colour palette forever. Other travels included the Vendée, Normandy, and Brittany. His work is represented in French museums, notably Angers, Geneva (Petit Palais), Lille (Musée des Beaux-Arts), Nantes, and Paris (Musée d’Orsay). Lebasque died at Cannet, Alpes Maritimes in 1937.
