Induno Domenico
"Peasants at the entrance to a village" 19th century Italian school

1850

About the Item

Domenico Induno (Milan, 1827-1890) "Peasants at the entrance to a village," oil on canvas, signed lower left D. Induno. Provenance: collection of Juan and Felix Bernasconi, Villa Argentina in Mendrisio (CH) Domenico Induno (Milan 1815, Milan 1878) trained in the 1830s under Pompeo Marchesi and Francesco Hayez. His painting, first directed to biblical and historical subjects under the influence of Hayez, slipped in later years into the genre theme behind the needs of an aristocratic, cultured and liberal Milanese patronage. To escape Austrian repression during the uprisings of 1848, Induno settled in Switzerland, in Canton Ticino; during this period he came into contact with the wealthy Bernasconi family, whose portraits he painted. From there he returned to Italy, to Florence, then to Milan. Critics of the time increasingly appreciated the genre painting inaugurated by Domenico, composed of national and popular themes featuring the humble and abandoned. In 1854 he was appointed an artistic associate of the Brera Academy. his paintings were a great success with the public and critics. In 1859 he reached the peak of his career with Al cader delle Foglie. He became an academic advisor in 1863. In 1873 he won the gold medal at the Vienna World's Fair, and in 1878 he received the Legion of Honor at the Paris Exposition. He died in Milan the same year. The Bernasconi collection was created by Juan and Félix, entrepreneurs from Ticino, sons of Giovanni, an artisan from Mendrisio who emigrated to Argentina and managed to make his fortune in the leather trade. The two, often in Milan on business, loved to frequent the city's artistic circles assiduously. Great admirers of painting, they visited the workshops of well-known artists, buying works directly from them. Between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the two brothers built up the most important collection of Italian painting of the late nineteenth century known as the "Bernasconi Collection," assembled in the spaces of the "Villa Argentina," built by their father in Mendrisio, nearly four thousand paintings, with absolute predominance of Lombard authors, including Pompeo Mariani, Mosè Bianchi, the Induno brothers and Luigi Rossi. The wealth of the collection, of which there is neither inventory nor any records, was made public when a branch of Bernasconi's heirs decided to sell a large part of it at auction , which they entrusted to Christie's auction house in London in 1987. In our painting the painter focuses on a corner between two old stone houses ; in the background a mountain and a glimpse of turquoise sky flooded with light. Further down, a laundress walks up the road to the village with a basket of laundry under her arm while a boy is intent on fishing, sitting on a bridge. A scene of daily life, a landscape that closely resembles the Alpine villages straddling Lombardy and Switzerland. The painter, who stayed in the Swiss Alps for a long time, paused to paint this scene in love with the light of the place, a beautiful light that brings the whole picture to life. We can observe a very similar landscape in the painting "The Village Fire" kept at the Gallery of Modern Art in Milan. The painting is on first canvas, in very good condition. It has a beautiful carved and gilded wooden frame of the mid 19thc. It is accompanied by certificate of authenticity, data sheet and proof of provenance from the Bernasconi collection.
