About the Item

A fine naive landscape painting with a windmill by American artist Janet Munro (b. 1949). Munro was born in Woburn, MA, and her work focuses on the waterfront lives of everyday people - her favorite subjects are her native Massachusetts, New England, East-Coast factory towns and the Hudson River. Whether it is a bustling town street, or a quiet bayside, Munro is always striving for realism, and she carefully finishes each canvas to tell a story of American Life. The artist describes her life in the following quote “I got married in 1968, and did not go to college after high school. We had three kids right away, and I had a lot of part-time jobs, but I never took a job I couldn't quit. I've been a waitress, housekeeper, baby-sitter, window washer, bakery clerk, flower designer, and hospital EKG technician. But I always knew that I was really a painter, and that working for a little money at some other job was temporary, 'till I could get back to my canvases." Her work can be found in a multitude of well known public and private collections including The Smithsonian Institution, The Clinton White House, Mrs. Barbara Bush Sr., Mrs. Ethel Kennedy, Estate of Mrs. Rose Kennedy, Smucker's Inc., Tropicana Inc., The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, The American Cancer Society, CDC., Atlanta, Museum of American Folk Art, N.Y.C., Estate of Dr. Benjamin Spock, Estate of Emmet Kelly Sr., Mr. Cliff Robertson, Estate Mr. Isaac Stern, The Beach Boys, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Whoopi Goldberg, and Penny Marshall. Barnett, Fort Worth, Texas In 1905, Gerrit Beneker began his art career as an illustrator. He married Flora Judd, his high school sweetheart from Grand Rapids and they moved to Brooklyn, NY. Gerrit's early passion was to create an art that would inspire and provide honor to the workingman. As such, he had no interest in painting portraits of pretty women, which were so often seen on the magazine covers of the day. Rather he wanted to seek out workingmen on the bridges, tunnels and skyscrapers of NYC, and paint them in their environments. He completed over 150 magazine covers, numerous ads including many for Ivory Soap...
