About the Item

Charming mid century watercolor painting of late 19th Century Paris street scene circa 1950. Signed lower left "Julius" , attributed to Julius Rosenbaum (1879-1956). Presented in gilt toned frame with new mat. Shipped without glass. Image, 14"H x 8.25"W. German Jewish artist born in Neuenburg am Rhein. He attended the Académie Julian, 1900-01 studying under Henri Matisse, furthering his studies in Munich, Breslau, 1905 and Berlin in 1910 where he was a pupil of Lovis Corinth. Between 1918 and 1933 he worked as a freelance painter and graphic artist. In 1930 he married the artist Adele Reifenberg. However, because the German Government forbade him to paint, Rosenbaum had to teach crafts in Jewish schools until he and his wife left Germany and moved to London in 1939. There he restored houses and porcelain and was able to resume serious painting. Julius and his wife Adele ran a private art school in the Belsize Park district of north London from 1948, until his death in 1956. The Ben Uri Art Gallery in London holds several examples of his work. Association of Jewish Refugees in Great Britain publication on the Memorial Exhibition of Julius Rosenbaum. JULIUS ROSENBAUM MEMORIAL EXHIBITION (March 18-April 11, 1957) Friends, connoisseurs, artists and critics gathered at the Ben Uri Art Gallery for the opening of the exhibition, bearing witness to the great popularity of this late painter and the high esteem in which his work is held. Nearly one hundred oil paintings, water-colours and drawings are on show, lovingly and beautifully arranged by his widow, Adele Reifenberg, herself a distinguished artist. Julius Rosenbaum, born 78 years ago in West Prussia in that Eastern part of the former German Empire which was a store-house of Jewish talent and genius, died in August, 1956, whilst on a pilgrimage fo the Rembrandt exhibitions in Holland. He certainly had something in common with the immortal Dutchman—a truly human, humble approach to men and to fhe world of objects. Every visitor to the exhibition will be moved by this qualify and by something else: Julius Rosenbaum as, alas, so many other Jewish artists of his time and origin, suffered persecution and exile. Here jn England life was not easy for him. He had to work hard and at jobs which had nothing to do with his calling. But, as Dr. Alec Lerner pointed out jn his opening speech, nothing of this more sombre side of his life is reflected in his work. Whether he puts his paint on delicately or whether his oils blaze forth in glowing colours, joy is reflected in them ; an inner contentment which will communicate itself to all visitors to the exhibition and to those who will buy his paintings, thus honouring a brave and fine man and a distinguished artist. A.R.
