About the Item

A French Impressionist view of a garden landscape by Louis Marie Barnabé Audibert. Signed bottom left, presented in a silver leaf and gilt frame. A charming atmospheric view probably of the artist's family's garden at Château de Carlevan near Marseille in the South of France. Audibert has captured the trees and lush foliage leading the eye in the distance to the domes of a church. On the terrace sit two geraniums in their terracotta pots shaded by the decorative wooden overhang of the pavilion with its striking red paint and decorative red and white banding. One can feel the heat of the Mediterranean sun and the wonderful cool of the shade. A charming atmospheric painting evoking a 'Belle Epoque' bygone age of elegance. Louis Marie Barnabé Audibert was the son and grandson of a Marseille soap industrialist, owner of the park and Château de Carlevan at Allauch. He studied at the Sacré-Cœur boarding school, then entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he stayed from 1906 to 1912 and where he discovered the Impressionist painters. After the First World War, he became friends with Louis-Mathieu Verdilhan and worked with him in Cassis. He became Winston Churchill's teacher. He is linked to many artists such as Albert Marquet, Moïse Kisling, Marcel Leprin etc. He made his first exhibition in 1920 and founded the 'Union des arts plastiques' in 1948. His paintings are found in private and national collections worldwide.
