Town Gate of Bruges – Kruispoort Poupaert Lionel Bruges 1900 – 1989 Belgian Painter Bruges School Signature: Signed bottom right Medium: Oil on panel Dimensions: Image size 60 x 71 cm Biography: Poupaert Lionel was born on September 27, 1900 in Bruges. His father was a goldsmith. In 1931 he got married and went to live in the Biezenstraat. He died on February 12, 1989. He was a painter, restorer of paintings and copyist of Flemish Primitives. In 1912 he entered the Bruges Academy of Fine Arts with director Flori Van Acker as his teacher and famed artist. In 1926 the Municipal Council of Bruges appointed him as a teacher at the Bruges Academy. He would remain in this position until 1966, the year he retired. Poupaert turned out to be a solid painter with high qualities. He painted numerous Bruges townscapes and also made portraits of important Bruges figures. In the period 1952-1956, he painted two portraits of guardians and superiors of the convent of Our Lady of the Pottery. In 1955 he collaborated with Jules Fonteyne on the murals of the Church of Christ the King. In 1961 he copied for the second time Memling’s triptych “The Adoration of the Magi” by order of Bruges Naval College who gave it as a gift to the King and Queen of Belgium...

The bold flowers and repeating geometric patterns in this series of paintings are lushly modeled in oil paint, and are coupled with the use of inlaid wood. Surrounding the colorful and whimsical bouquets and garlands is a border of complimentary colors rife with kaleidoscopic floral images to further entice the eye. Influences of Persian miniatures and French Baroque are prevalent, as well as traditional floral painting which was used to document nature’s beauty. The artist states, “By using subject matter that is historically decorative and painterly, I seek to explore the medium’s more ethereal content.” The paintings become visually intense and hallucinatory as different varieties of flowers and leaves dance and intertwine in the geometry of the surrounding patterns. Traditionally mysticism was effectively communicated in painting through an assortment of lyrical, painterly indulgences, creating a supernatural, as well as an escapist experience. "The Poppy Field" is an American Impressionist painting of a beautiful poppy field in Italy. Nelson H. White was born in New London, Connecticut in 1932. White has been surrounded by art and artists from the time he was born. He received his earliest art instruction from his grandfather, Henry Cooke White (1861-1952) and his father Nelson Cooke White (1900-1989), both important American artists. The family lived in Waterford, Connecticut and the elder White had been an early member of the art colony in Old Lyme, Connecticut. Known for his paintings of the Connecticut landscape and shoreline, Henry Cooke White became a teacher to his son, Nelson Cooke White. Living with his parents at the Florence Griswold house in Old Lyme, he met some of the most important and influential artists of the day, Childe Hassam, Will Howe Foote and Harry Hoffman. Later, Nelson White's father began to take his family to summer on Shelter Island and became friendly with many of the artists of the Peconic colony such as Irving Wiles, an important American impressionist. After graduating from the Tabor Academy in Marion, Massachusetts in 1951, Nelson H. White began to study at Mitchell College in Connecticut but left to pursue studies in the violin, musical theory and composition. At this time, he began to spend more time studying art with his father and grandfather. By 1955, Nelson H. White had decided to devote himself to a career as a painter and traveled to Florence, Italy to become an apprentice to Pietro Annigoni, the world-renowned Florentine master. Within two years, the young White had won two awards for his work. While in Florence he also studied with the great Italian teacher, Nerina Simi. Today, White divides his time between the United States and Florence. Although he has received instruction from some very important artists, White's work is highly individual. He paints with great spirit. Upon seeing his work one quickly senses White’s great love for nature and the outdoors. Through his eyes we are able to view and interpret nature in an intimate manner. This ability to alter or enhance reality is the very crux of what an artist is all about, and their success at attaining this is usually the defining element as to their stature in the field, as either an abstract or realist painter. Occasionally a painter is able to combine these two distinct disciplines and create an art form, which holds a viewer’s attention by balancing the paradox of the flat painted surface with the illusion of depth and space. "As a painter, it is important for me to address the concerns of painting what has been done-and what can I add to this. My work on aluminum is an attempt to use the qualities of refracted light, and have these qualities interact with the painting. The completed image is produced both by refracted light, created by the use of various wire brushes and paint airbrushed in transparent layers. Within this process about half of the image is produced by refracted light alone, simulating paint, and about half by paint."
