Guy Carleton Wiggins was the son of Carleton Wiggins, a painter of landscapes and animals. Wiggins first studied at his father's Art School in Connecticut and later enrolled in the National Academy of Design where he trained with William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri, after a brief spell studying architecture at the Polytechnic Institute in Brooklyn. At the age of 20 he was already well known and was the youngest American artist to have a work accepted for the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Prior to the onset of World War I, Wiggins travelled to Europe and painted the English countryside. In England he met his future wife Dorothy Stuart Johnson. The couple returned to the US and set up home in Connecticut. He established a year-round art school, the Guy Wiggins Art School, in Essex. He liked to spend his winters in New York and summers in Connecticut. From the beginning of his career, it was a constant concern of Georges d'Espagnet to assert his originality. His studies at the École des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, did not last very long, for he wanted immediate independence and decided to follow courses in the private academies of Montparnasse. In about 1900, he became acquainted with Maurice Denis, Bonnard and Vuillard, and his collaboration with Denis led to a renewal of religious art in France.
In 1903, d'Espagnet was one of the founders of the Salon d'Automne, and was appointed professor in charge of studios at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris, in 1934. He illustrated a number of books: Rémy de Gourmont's Evil Prayers ( Oraisons mauvaises) (1896), The Saints of Paradise ( Les Saintes du paradis) (1898), Simone (1907), Sistine ( Sixtine) (1922); Alphonse Daudet's The Immortal ( L'Immortel) (1930); André Gide's The Pastoral Symphony ( La Symphonie pastorale); Francis Jammes' Clearings in the Sky ( Chairières dans le ciel) (1948).
D'Espagnet belongs to the group of artists who made the Courrier Français so successful. The drawings of his which are published in it are strongly expressive and some bear comparison with the designs of the great Renaissance masters. He also contributed to L'Image. He often placed cheerful nudes in a landscape, reminding us that, though he moved away from the Fauves, he retained their freedom of colour and arabesque. He painted many portraits, including those of Albert André, André Barbier, Victor Boucher, Déodat de Séverac, Albert Marque, André Marty and Albert Roussel. He also painted mural decorations, including a wall for the Palais de la Découverte (1937), the ceiling of the Victor Hugo Room in the Palais du Luxembourg (1939), a decorative panel for the Palais de Justice, Toulouse (1941) and interior decorations for private houses. His landscapes are Impressionist in inspiration, and work for a certain sobriety, an intimacy, both in their composition - one, two or three sketched figures and large open spaces - and in the choice of colours and treatment with the special hazy brushstroke that marks his style.
D'Espagnet took part in a number of annual Parisian exhibitions, including the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, the Salon d'Automne (from 1903 to 1949, except in special circumstances), the Salon de la Libre Ésthétique, Brussels (1899, 1901), the Berlin Secessionists (1940). He also exhibited at the first Salon de la Société de la Gravure sur Bois. Michel Loeb, 1930- painter, was born in Saint-Cloud. Lives and works in Luberon. Art naïf. Pointillist, Fauvist, Surrealist, Dadai artist, unclassifiable, highly original, unique art. His works radiate a light, a love of colors, of the absurd, of the funny, of the tender and of the poetic. French Naive art. Galerie Felix Vercel showed his work. Whether in color or black & white, in painting, sculpture or a lithograph print, the world of Michel Loeb is a poetic, joyful and exuberant paradise, where humor and fantasy are never far away. Extravagant works that sparkle like their iconoclastic author whose titles often say a lot. Each work is executed with great attention to detail, often under the magnifying glass, by this former jeweler, including its very large formats. Michel Loeb has drawn parallels to his masters of painting, facetious but always majestic winks and the desire for paintings in the style of Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Edward Hopper, Hokusai.
Michel Loeb is a painter born in Saint-Cloud. He first trained as a jeweler and diamond dealer like his father and painted as an amateur. He devoted himself to painting from 1970, after his meeting with the famous art dealer Félix Vercel, who then took him under contract and exhibited him in Paris, New York and Tokyo. Galerie Felix Vercel in Paris (Avenue Matignon) and New York (Madison Avenue) showed artists as Pablo Picasso, Fernand Leger, Armand Guillaumin, Maurice Utrillo and Claude Venard.
He is part of School of Paris artists that included Marcel Cosson, Jean Jansem, Claude Salomon, Michel Kouliche, Bernard Buffet, Bernard Lorjou, Jean Dufy, and others. Naive art was then in fashion and his work enjoyed great success; he has prepared no less than one exhibition per year since this period. Recently he had the opportunity to present his work in Provence, Oslo or Shanghai. Since 1988, he has settled in Oppède, in the Luberon, among vineyards, scrubland and olive groves where he draws his inspiration. Frank Dekkers (1961) is a landscape painter par excellence. Full of dedication and diligence he always works on location outdoors, defying the elements. The weather plays an important role in his work: an emerging early winter, heavy summer rain, lightning storms and flaming sunsets form endless sources of inspiration.
Like 19th century painters as Monet or Renoir he takes his easel, panel and oil paint outside where Frank finds the peace and quiet to create his paintings. Being outside, experiencing the landscape, the passing of the day, is what makes him paint.
Dekkers masters many techniques, such as etching, woodcutting, ink drawing and painting in oil. Whatever the technique he uses, his work is always recognizable by his unique signature.
He can accurately depict the essence of the landscape, using minimal resources. By reducing his subjects to lines, surfaces, colors and light, he shows us his interpretation of the landscape without it becoming unrecognizable to those who haven’t been there.
