Claude Hayes was a Dublin born painter who to avoid his father's wish to make a businessman of him ran away to sea and served on the Golden Fleece, one of the transports used in the Abyssinian expedition of 1867-68, and also spent a year in the United States. Returning to London, he studied art at Heatherley's and the Royal Academy Schools, and then in Antwerp, under Charles Verlat. He worked in Hampshire with James Aumonier and also in Surrey with William Charles Estall, whose sister he married.
Hayes exhibited widely in London and provincial centres, and was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in 1886, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1883, and the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour, 1902. He also showed at the RA, RBSA, Brook Street Art Gallery, Dudley Gallery, FAS, GI, Grosvenor Gallery, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, MAFA, RBA, RHA, Ridley Art Club, RSW and Walker's Gallery, London. In 1912, Claude Hayes represented England at the Venice Biennale. His work is in various public collections in England and Ireland including the Ulster Museum, Museums Sheffield, Torre Abbey Museum and the Leeds City Art Gallery. His father was the artist Edwin Hayes.

Hoffbauer was born in Paris in 1875, the son of an Alsatian architect, artist and archaeologist who published Paris through the Ages. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under Fernand Cormon and Gustave Moreau, rubbing shoulders with Matisse, Rouault, and Marquet, then won an Honorable Mention in the Salon of 1896 and academic prizes in 1898-99. At the Paris Universal Exposition he won a bronze medal. On a French government traveling scholarship called the Prix National du Salon, Hoffbauer discovered Italy, Greece and Egypt. Then the government purchased Champs de bataille in 1904 (Musée du Luxembourg). On a second scholarship in late 1909, Hoffbauer visited New York where he was greeted by his friend Charles Dana Gibson (1867-1944), the creator of the "Gibson Girl." Raymond Thibesart was born into an affluent family on May 2nd, 1874. As a small child, Thibesart’s family moved to a suburb of Paris where the very young artist found a wealth of teachers and inspiration to pull from. Thibesart showed such proclivity for drawing at an early age, and had enough talent that famed impressionist Emile Boggio began giving him lessons when he was just 11 years old. Eventually, Thibesart began formal training at the Lycee Rollin in Paris, followed by studies at L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Academie Julian.
While working in Symbolism, Thibesart became a student of the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art movements of his native France and began winning numerous medals in France, including the gold medal from the Societe des Artistes Francais in 1897. Thibesart then began his studies with the famed Impressionist Henri Martin for much of his early life. From Martin, he learned the technique of “plein air" painting who as a master of the discipline. Proficiency of this technique and its aesthetic, freed up the young artist, allowing him the ability to create amazingly beautiful light and shadow splayed across his trademark subjects which frequently included the landscapes of Italy...

The artist:
Born in Warwick in 1901, Duffield came to Bristol at the age of 23 as an artist at the studio of Mardon Son and Hall. He worked as an illustrator producing designs for cigarette cards, remaining with the company for 37 years until his retirement. He was elected an Artist Member of the Bristol Savages in 1946. He was an extremely keen and regular attender not only in the studio but at all other Savage functions. He was noted for his friendly demeanour and seldom seen without a pipe in his mouth. He was a good pianist and would play popular tunes after the Wednesday evenings’ entertainment for members to join in singing and always with his pipe in his mouth. In 1965 he was commissioned by the Gloucester Regiment to paint a portrait of Brigadier Manley Angell James, VC, DSO, MBE, MC, a Bristol man who won his VC during the first World War. The painting is now in the Imperial War Museum. Frank was made a Life Member in 1973 and died in 1982.
Frank Duffiled was a member of the artist group, known as "The Bristol Savages":
Founded in 1894 by Ernest Ehlers, he invited his fellow Bristol based artists to spend a friendly evening in his studio to work and talk. At first, meetings were held in their private studios, then as their numbers grew, in rented premises. By 1904 this led to the official founding of the Bristol Savages and the holding ever since, of similar weekly meetings between October and May each year. In 1905 the first exhibition of paintings was held at the premises of George Nichols & Co., an auctioneer in Broad Street, Bristol. During the next 14 years exhibitions were held annually in Bristol and their first permanent home was Brandon Cottage which was made available to them through the good offices of fellow member James Fuller Eberle.
