Edward Avedisian (June 15, 1936, Lowell, Massachusetts – August 17, 2007, Philmont, New York) was an American abstract painter who came into prominence during the 1960s. His work was initially associated with Color field painting and in the late 1960s with Lyrical Abstraction and Abstract Expressionism.
He studied art at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. By the late 1950s he moved to New York City. Between 1958 and 1963 Avedisian had six solo shows in New York. In 1958 he initially showed at the Hansa Gallery, then he had three shows at the Tibor de Nagy Gallery and in 1962 and 1963 at the Robert Elkon Gallery. He continued to show at the Robert Elkon Gallery almost every year until 1975.
During the 1960s his work was broadly visible in the contemporary art world. He joined the dynamic art scene in Greenwich Village, frequenting the Cedar Tavern on Tenth Street, associating with the critic Clement Greenberg, and joining a new generation of abstract artists, such as Darby Bannard, Kenneth Noland, Jules Olitski, and Larry Poons.
Avedisian was among the leading figures to emerge in the New York art world during the 1960s. An artist who mixed the hot colors of Pop Art with the cool, more analytical qualities of Color Field painting, he was instrumental in the exploration of new abstract methods to examine the primacy of optical experience.
One of his paintings was appeared on the cover of Artforum, in 1969, his work was included in the 1965 Op Art The Responsive Eye exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art and in four annuals at the Whitney Museum of American Art. His paintings were widely sought after by collectors and acquired by major museums in New York and elsewhere. As a painter, I examine how the depiction of light contributes to our experience of paintings. The portrayal of light helps a painting to convey the atmosphere and mood of a scene, and is much of what enables a painting to convey depth and realism. Our perception of lighting features occurs largely through pathways in the brain that carry only black and white information, pathways which are distinct from areas that encode the colors and details we use to delineate specific objects. By painting in grayscale, I try to interact specifically with this region of our visual system, with the hope of conveying some of the spaciousness and emotional significance that light can imbue on scenes. Light, whether as the crisp contrast of a back-lit forest or the gray haze of an industrial landscape, is what defines a scene. Its power to communicate the feel of a place is the principle subject of my paintings.

I have always been a bit obsessed with horizons and how a horizontal line on a painting becomes 'landscape' in the viewers mind. I love the idea of suggesting a landscape, but then abstracting the subject and using the materials in such a way that the texture and details made by the paint, and the grain of the wood panel, are as important if not more so than the subject itself." Rebecca enjoys balancing on the fine line between abstraction and representation, to imply a landscape with paint rather than accurately visually recording it. Her landscapes are somehow subliminal. Somehow ‘other’. Somewhere not quite real. An idea or a memory of a landscape. “Hush” is part of my Tapestry series of semi abstract paintings that explore the simplification of shape, space, colour and texture in places I have visited. Some of these are specific to landscapes around my studio in Surrey, the South Downs and Devon but mostly they are a visual amalgamation of experiences, like a patchwork of memories and feelings from one or many places. Tapestry-like landscapes with bold mono-tone blocks which reflect the shadowy-shape of evergreen trees against more open hills and meadows. I see more when I’m not focused on the detail, painting intuitively with a mix of acrylics, inks, chalk and oil pastels to capture an emotive response to a place rather than the reality of a specific landscape. Brush strokes and marks are layered and carved with fluid lines that create imagined dream-like patterns. “Hush” is painted on a wood panel with muted shades of slate, moss, pebble and shell, contrasted with a bold graphic swathe of charcoal.

"Coming up for air" is part of my Tapestry series of semi abstract paintings that explore the simplification of shape and texture in the places I have visited as the seasons change. Tapestry-like landscapes with bold mono-tone blocks and a cooler palette are evident as Autumn changes to Winter. Layers of paint are carved to reveal complex textures and marks with underlaying warmer tones. Change always sparks new ideas. This painting is framed in a hand-painted St.Ives frame in white.
