Set in a beautiful classical landscape of verdant hills overlooking a waterway, a stream in the foreground that later becomes a wide river in the distance, are the figures of a shepherd and a shepherdess leading their flock to water.
The pastoral scenes of this typical characterized the production of Dutch artist Michiel Carree, who was court painter to the King of Prussia in the early decades of the 18th century.
The painting, on first canvas, is presented in a coeval gilded carved wood frame.
