About the Item

Nicholas Matthew Condy (1818-1851) A Royal Navy Frigate of the White Squadron, Plymouth Oil on panel Painting size 8 x 10 in Framed size 15 x 17 in The Collection of Admiral William Henry Smyth (1788-1865); thence by descent. Nicholas Matthews Condy (1816–1851), also known as Nicholas Condy the Younger, was a British marine painter renowned for his detailed and accurate depictions of ships and coastal scenes. Born in Union Street, Plymouth, in 1816, he was the son of landscape painter Nicholas Condy (1793–1857), with whom he is often confused due to their shared profession and similar names. Condy received his education at Mount Radford School in Exeter and later studied under Reverend C. Thomas of Lew Trenchard. Although initially intended for a military career, he chose to pursue art, focusing on marine subjects that reflected his deep familiarity with ships and the Devon coastline. Condy's work garnered early admiration from George Wyndham, 3rd Earl of Egremont, a notable patron of the arts and supporter of J.M.W. Turner. Between 1842 and 1845, three of Condy's sea pieces were exhibited at the Royal Academy, signaling his rising prominence in the art world. His paintings are celebrated for their precise representation of maritime subjects, a skill honed through his lifelong exposure to Plymouth's bustling port. Among his notable works are "The Post Office Packet Shelldrake off Falmouth" and "Ships off Devonport," both housed in the National Maritime Museum in London. His oeuvre also includes "On Board the Yacht Alarm" and "The Mew Stone from Maker Heights," showcasing his ability to capture the interplay between sea vessels and their natural surroundings. Condy married Flora Ross, the third daughter of Major John Lockhart Gallie of the 28th Regiment. They had a daughter, Harriet Charlotte Florence Pigott Condy (1846–1880), who later married painter Walter Duncan. Condy's promising career was cut short when he died suddenly at his home in Plymouth on 20 May 1851, at the age of 35. Despite his brief life, Nicholas Matthews Condy left a lasting impact on marine art. His works continue to be appreciated for their historical significance and artistic merit, offering a window into 19th-century maritime life. His paintings remain sought after by collectors and are featured in esteemed collections, including those of the National Maritime Museum in London and the National Maritime Museum Cornwall.
