About the Item
This Western Landscape by New England Impressionist painter Richard Edward Miller is a 12.5 x 23.5 inches, oil on board painting from 1931. A plein-air and impressionist painter as well as illustrator, Richard Miller (1875 - 1943) was especially known for his paintings of female figures in sunlit interiors. He was part of the American art colony in Paris during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, staying from 1898 to 1914 when World War I began. His reputation in France was so distinguished that he was made a Chevalier in the Legion of Honor.
Returning to the United States, he taught at the Stickney School in Pasadena, California from 1915 to 1917 and was a member of the California Art Club, dedicated to "plein-air" painting. He then became a prominent painter in Provincetown, Massachusetts and Provincetown, Rhode Island where, as a teacher at the Mary Wheeler School, he took students to Giverny, France for many successive summers.
Miller's early painting was tonalist, and included a series of night scenes of Paris, but his association with Frederic Frieseke lightened his palette and placed him among the American Impressionists in France. Miller's "favorite color combinations are juxtapositions of greens and purples.
He was born in St. Louis, Missouri and began the study of art at age 10. From 1893 to 1897, he attended the St. Louis School of Fine Arts and then got a job as illustration artist for the St. Louis Post Dispatch. He earned a scholarship to go to Paris in 1898, and studied at the Academie Julian with Benjamin Constant and Jean Paul Laurens. In 1901, he became a teacher at the rival school, the Academie Colarossi.
In Paris his good friends were artists who, like Miller, became well-known in American art circles--Guy Rose, Frederick Frieseke, and Lawton Parker. They painted together at Giverny and socialized with Claude Monet at his home. He died in 1943 in St. Augustine, Florida.

Richard Edward Miller
Richard E. Miller was an American Impressionist who was known for his paintings of romantic femininity. He began his studies in America at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts before receiving a scholarship that allowed him to study in Giverny, France. While studying in Europe with artists like Frederick Frieseke, Miller became inspired by his neighbor Claude Monet, and adopted a lighter, Impressionistic style. Miller went on to produce exteriors of porches and lawns containing idealized women, who he often painted in large, decorative dresses. In France Miller received a gold medal from the Paris Salon and was knighted into the French Legion of Honor. He later co-founded the Provincetown Artists Colony in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Chauncey Foster Ryder Landscape with Figures Oil Painting 1868-1949 Tonalist
By Chauncey Foster Ryder
Located in Chesterfield, NJ
CHAUNCEY FOSTER RYDER (American, 1868-1949),
Pasture Lands
oil/canvas signed LR 31.5 x 39.5 image, 40.5 x 48.5 framed
A wonderfully subtle tonalist painting by Ryder incorporating a farmer/farmhand probably moving cows about the pastures mid right in the scene. Ryder uses a subtle S design from lower left that zig zags up to the figure and cows. The painting shows Ryder's masterful use of abstract design and technique utilizing textures in his application of paint giving the painting life and interest.
Original frame, some craquelure in sky, old surface. Bears Newhouse Galleries, possibly NYC, label verso.
The painting hangs in my collection currently and would benefit from a cleaning and new varnish. It is a large museum quality oil painting.

Bio-
Chauncey Foster Ryder (29 February 1868 – 18 May 1949)[1] was an early 20th century American Postimpressionist Tonalist landscape painter known for a green-gray palette termed 'Ryder green'.
Education and personal life
Ryder was born in 1868 in Danbury, Connecticut, but grew up mainly in New Haven.[2][3] He began studying painting as a boy. In his early twenties, he moved to Chicago to attend the Art Institute,[4] then Smith's Academy.[5] After only a year at the latter, he was hired as an instructor.[5]
In 1891, he married Mary Dole Keith.[5] In 1901, they moved to Paris, France, where Ryder continued his art education, studying with Jean-Paul Laurens at the Académie Julian. Ryder stayed in France for several years, living in an art colony at Étaples and exhibiting his work at the Paris Salon (1903–1909).[3] He took on occasional students, including American painter William Posey Silva...
