Abstract Landscape Paintings

ABSTRACT STYLE

Beginning in the early 20th century, abstract art became a leading style of modernism. Rather than portray the world in a way that represented reality, as had been the dominating style of Western art in the previous centuries, abstract paintings, prints and sculptures are marked by a shift to geometric forms, gestural shapes and experimentation with color to express ideas, subject matter and scenes.

Although abstract art flourished in the early 1900s, propelled by movements like Fauvism and Cubism, it was rooted in the 19th century. In the 1840s, J.M.W. Turner emphasized light and motion for atmospheric paintings in which concrete details were blurred, and Paul Cézanne challenged traditional expectations of perspective in the 1890s.

Some of the earliest abstract artists — Wassily Kandinsky and Hilma af Klint — expanded on these breakthroughs while using vivid colors and forms to channel spiritual concepts. Painter Piet Mondrian, a Dutch pioneer of the art movement, explored geometric abstraction partly owing to his belief in Theosophy, which is grounded in a search for higher spiritual truths and embraces philosophers of the Renaissance period and medieval mystics. Black Square, a daringly simple 1913 work by Russian artist Kazimir Malevich, was a watershed statement on creating art that was free “from the dead weight of the real world,” as he later wrote.

Surrealism in the 1920s, led by artists such as Salvador Dalí, Meret Oppenheim and others, saw painters creating abstract pieces in order to connect to the subconscious. When Abstract Expressionism emerged in New York during the mid-20th century, it similarly centered on the process of creation, in which Helen Frankenthaler’s expressive “soak-stain” technique, Jackson Pollock’s drips of paint, and Mark Rothko’s planes of color were a radical new type of abstraction.

Conceptual art, Pop art, Hard-Edge painting and many other movements offered fresh approaches to abstraction that continued into the 21st century, with major contemporary artists now exploring it, including Anish Kapoor, Mark Bradford, El Anatsui and Julie Mehretu.

Eruptions - Abstract Gestural Oil Painting with Red and Brown Colors
Located in New York, NY
Ruggero Vanni's Eruptions is a 64 x 52 inch abstract gestural oil painting. It is an abstract landscape of vigorous brushstrokes and light, with a strong luminous central focus. The main colors are orange, brown, and red. There are clear references to the Romantic paintings of English artist William Turner, especially his paintings depicting sea storms. Vanni painting process is a combination of very wide and impulsive brush strokes, that he later redefines with very delicate and detailed interventions. For this reason, as the viewer approaches, the painting goes under a constant transformation of shapes and colors. Vanni states, "My works allude to natural phenomena, in a raw state, devoid of the limiting constrictions of literal representation. Nature is there, as a landscape, a view looking up in the air, or plunging down underwater. Imagery kept on the edge of recognition, so the final association is created in the mind. Contrasts of matter, color, light, are created to provoke emotional responses. In the large paintings the atmospheric composition is built by raised brushstrokes shattered and reassembled to reveal an underlying struggle. In the smaller works paper is cast tumultuously as a counterpoint to its inherent frailness. References to the history of painting are multiple and mixed: Venetian impasto and glazing, Luminist light, Abstract Expressionist texture, Baroque perspective. It is important to avoid mannerism, metabolize the suggestions and integrate them with empirical visual stimuli. Dissecting responses to everyday experiences into light, color, matter. There is no intent to escape reality, but to create a visual experience that communicates directly with our psyche; open to be reinterpreted continuously through our own evolution and the changing times." Ruggero Vanni was born in Paris. He studied painting from 1973 to 1978 at the Istituto d’Arte in Rome, Italy, under the guidance of Italian artist Michelangelo Conte...

City Today - Original Oil Painting
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Ekaterina Ermilkina’s original, abstract fine art paintings are created using a skillful combination of applying and removing oil paint with a palette knife on canvas. Her inspirations are the expressionistic skylines of big cities like Manhattan, Philadelphia, or Chicago filled with colorful skyscrapers. The urban, scenic views are abstracted and rich with vivid and textured layers. Ermilkina’s emotional architectural patchwork and mosaic cityscapes radiate a life of balance and positive energy. This artwork measures 12 inches high by 48 inches wide. Ermilkina carefully adds thick cube-like dots of oil paint with a palette knife in distinct patterns onto the surface, adding an intricate three-dimensional texture to her oil paintings. The color spots partially blend into a fuller range of background tones and give the artworks a significant depth. She signs the front of the artwork and paints the sides as a continuation of the front. It does not require framing. It is wired and ready to hang. Free local Los Angeles area delivery. Affordable U.S. and global shipping available. A certificate of authenticity issued by the gallery is included. Born in 1975, Saratov, Russia, Ekaterina Ermilkina now lives and works in New Jersey. She grew up in the beautiful city of Yalta in Crimea on the North coast of the Black Sea, where in 1985 she enrolled as a student to the School of Art of F.Vasiliev, graduating in 1991. After her first introduction to fine art in Yalta, in 1992, Ekaterina Ermilkina moved to Saint-Petersburg, Russia. In 1998 she received her MFA from State Art and Industry Academy. The unique beauty and rich culture of the city inspired her to paint cityscapes. In late 2005, Ermilkina moved to the U.S. Her works has been presented in various solo and group exhibitions in international galleries and art fairs and have been collected throughout the United States, as well as Canada, Germany, France, Switzerland, Japan, Hong Kong, and Russia. Her artworks pop with color and motion, casting a candied haze across the urban landscape. “I am focused on art all my life. It makes me optimistic, full of energy and happy. The vivid colors of Crimea where I grew up, the beautiful marine of the Black Sea, inspired me to paint for the rest of my life. I believe that paintings can reflect our desires for beauty, poetics and perfection.” Artspace Warehouse has been representing and exhibiting Ekaterina Ermilkina's original oil paintings since 2013. The gallery has been a 1stdibs partner since 2014 with consistently excellent reviews from clients worldwide. Home Is Like the Robin's Nest, Oil Painting
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
Artist Jennifer Ross paints a sunny and cheerful still life of a robin’s nest occupied with three eggs. Nestled within a carefully woven nook of grass and twigs, three blue eggs appear within its dark recesses. The nest is set against a white surface cut by a bright complementing yellow hue. “Robin’s egg blue is one of the most beautiful colors found in nature, and one found on my palette,” says Jennifer.

About the Artist
Artist Jennifer Ross creates intimate portraits of birds, nests and horses. Jennifer grew up surrounded by the art of her mother and grandfather. Her attempt to follow in their footsteps presented detours, however, and she ended up working in art galleries selling other's work. But her desire to paint continued to grow throughout the years. Abstract Landscape Painting by Yangyang Pan 'Night Spark #2'
Located in White Plains, NY
'Night Spark #2' 2022 by Chinese/Canadian artist Yangyang Pan. Oil on canvas, 48 x 40 in. (framed) This beautiful abstract-expressionistic, landscape painting incorporates gestural brushstrokes resembling a floral bouquet in bold colors of blue, orange, yellow, green, brown, and white. It is framed in a thin, dark-stained blue wood frame. Yangyang Pan is widely recognized for her gestural abstract paintings primarily focused on the contrasts found in nature. Her expressive visual language takes inspiration from her physical surroundings and personal memories, fusing it with spirit and spontaneity sourced from emotions within. Her palette is chromatically saturated in a higher key, which delights the senses and adds drama to the composition. Pan’s love of flowers and gardens is central to her work; however, they are a means to an end. Pan’s ab-ex style is simply a reflection of her personal journey, beginning in traditional Chinese art...

Mid Century Modern Abstract Expressionist Gino Hollander Oil on Canvas Painting
Located in New York, NY
This sophisticated and large scale Mid Century Modern abstract expressionistic oil on canvas painting was realized by the esteemed 20th century visual artist and filmmaker Gino Hollander (1924-2015), in the United States in 1974. In dialogue with other canonized visualized artists of the period, most notably Joan Mitchell, this painting offers a dynamic composition in an understated and vibrant palette using a variety of painterly techniques. Executed in predominantly in grisaille and flaxen hues with ecru and amber accents, the composition features turpentine rivulets of running pigment; chunky blocks of paint rendered with a palette knife; and delicately applied brush strokes against a painted white background. The result is a captivatingly layered work that offers sustained visual pleasure and abundant visual discoveries. The solid white background adds negative space but also breath and depth to the composition. Full of verve and dynamism- and exhibiting masterful paint handling-, this painting embodies the qualities that discerning collectors of Abstract Expressionism (and modern art in general) absolutely adore. It would be a winning addition to any style of interior from classic Mid Century Modern to contemporary. It is signed and dated by the artist, and is in excellent vintage condition. The work comes presented in a custom black inked gallery frame. Gino Hollander was born in the New Jersey in 1924 and attended Rutgers University as well Hobart and William Smith College. He had two very different careers before he began painting – the first as part of the U.S. Army’s Mountain Division Ski Troop, and the second, an award-winning director and documentary filmmaker. Demonstrating his artistic versatility, Gino Hollander took up painting in 1960. From 1960 to 1962, Gino ran his first Hollander Gallery...

Artist Comments
Artist George Peebles embodies solemnity in a calm and pensive seascape. He envisions the composition reflecting on a dream by the water. Deep ocean waves rhythmically drift along the tantalizing vista. George displays the brief electric moment in nature entirely from his imagination.

About the Artist
Award-winning artist, George Peebles specializes in contemporary panoramic scenes. Breathtaking combinations of brilliant hues and gradients of rich skies map out his paintings. “My art is a reflection of the place inside each of us where we connect to nature,” says George. Based in Michigan, he draws inspiration from electric moments within his environment. Each stroke is an inward expression of his emotions as he paints from memory. George, being colorblind views his work as a lifelong process that leads him to new concepts and ideas best expressed on his canvas. When he’s out of the studio, George works as a chef at their local hospital. His work is represented in eighteen healthcare facilities.
