About the Item

Amazing oil on canvas painting by French-born painter Marthe Germain, signed and dated 1986. It depicts a pleasant and picturesque scene of a coastal town. It focuses on capturing the beauty of the urban landscape, without any apparent message or denunciation, an aspect that links it to Post-Impressionism. Added to this is the way the drawing is diluted by the simplification of the figures into patches of color. The various figures of houses and boats dissolve into small, rapid splashes of color that bring the work to life. In the water and on the shore, there are small boats in bright colors (red, yellow, white), lending dynamism to the scene. The brushstrokes are loose and visible (common in Impressionists), with a considerable amount of texture, reinforcing the sense of movement and light. It is a piece that conveys calm with a serene and balanced composition, where the only thing that matters is contemplating its beauty. On the back, the title of the work is handwritten, along with the artist's name and an address in the French town of Viroflay.
