About the Item
William Beattie-Brown, RSA, (1831-1909) painted landscapes with great mastery of the elements, known for his rendering of rapids in waters and detailed foliage far in the distance. His work often has a tonal quality, before his time. 'Cottage in the Lee' is a croft-style home in an idyllic rural location in Scotland.
Beattie-Brown was born outside Edinburgh in the town of Haddington, then his family moved to Edinburgh where he attended school in Leith, was apprenticed to a glass stainer, then entered the Trustee's Art Academy, and studied with other landscape artists, Sam Bough and Horatio McCullough. At age seventeen he exhibited a painting at the Royal Scottish Academy, and was represented in RSA annual exhibitions the rest of his life.
Beattie-Brown is renowned for his technical excellence and tone. By layering hues of similar color into the detailed tree line and foliage far into the distance, he creates a tonal feeling well ahead of that trend.
Beattie-Brown continued to exhibit in the London Royal Academy, and his work is well represented in collections across the UK, and the Scottish National Gallery.
Cottage in the Lee has the long distance hues and detail for which Beattie-Brown is known, often painting in a tranquil natural setting. The painting has his characteristic rendering of white crests on rapidly moving water.
Presented in very good condition, the painting is about 26" by 20" with the frame, and 17" by 12" canvas sight. The frame is probably newer and is in excellent condition.
Bring nature and tranquility into your home.
