About the Item

William Beattie-Brown (1831-1909) RSA, (Royal Scottish Academy) painted 'Highland Stream with Sheep ' in crisp detailed oil paint on canvas. Beattie-Brown excels in water rapids and the fine tonal quality of the background trees. This one is in verdant greens with blue mountains in the distance. Beattie-Brown exhibited in the Royal Scottish Academy from 1848 when he was seventeen, and presented work in every annual exhibition until his death in 1909. he was elected a member and academician of the Royal Scottish Academy. Born in Haddington outside Edinburgh, Beattie-Brown was educated in Edinburgh, first in Leith and then in Trustee's Art Academy where he studied with other Scottish fine artists of the time. He lived in Belgium for an extended period painting mostly watercolour, but his main work is in oil paints, like this one. Most of his work is of the Scottish Highlands, pioneering plein art at the time, often completing his work directly from nature. His plein art realism draws on his masterful expertise in detail, that gave him additional work as a draughtsman. His work was exhibited widely, including the Royal Academy in London. Today his work his represented in the Scottish National Gallery and other public galleries. Saltire Gallerie was able to clean blackened grime off this painting to reveal the unusually bright stream for a painting this age. Presented in a likely original fine gilt frame with depth and detail, this painting is ready to hang. Please note, Saltire Gallerie currently has another painting by this artist of the same size, making a pairing possible.
