Sunrise on Nantucket Island Fisherman Gazing at the Sky 1929 Nantucket Sunrise, a Fisherman is gazing at the sky by James Francis Barker (American, 1872 – 1950). He was born in 1872 in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of a railroad ticketing agent and a New Orleanian of Spanish and French extraction. His ancestors on his father's side included 11 of the 15 families who settled Nantucket in 1659. He graduated from Cornell University in 1893 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and spent another year studying Architecture at the graduate level. He briefly worked at D. H. Burnham & Company and Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. before switching to education, With a degree in mechanical engineering and graduate degree in architecture, his career was centered among institutes of higher learning. Barker was also a skilled painter and a talented photographer. Barker specialized in waterfront, wharf, and beach scenes. The artist exhibited his work during the summer months at the Eagle’s Wing Studio on Union Street, having named the studio after a steamer, which had been captained by his grandfather. James Francis Barker (1872 – 10 December 1950) was the second president of the Rochester Athenæum and Mechanics Institute, succeeding Carleton B. Gibson, from 1916–1919. He also pursued painting, pottery, metal working, and cabinet making. The following is taken directly from this column: “Fred Yost’s living style is like his painting style. He has fun with it. Fred John Yost was born in Switzerland, he’ sure, on November 6, 1889, he thinks. His father John brought the family to his country when Fred was about a year old—first to New York and later to Canton, Sebring and finally Alliance, where Yost Sr. loaded freight for a railroad. Fred like drawing and painting so far back he can’t remember how or when it started—it was always that way. But through the public schools in Alliance he didn’t think of this as a career possibility. He wanted to be a newspaperman. He worked his way through Mt. Union College, finishing, he thinks, about 1912. Then he beat it for New York and after kicking around for a time got a job as a proofreader for the Wall Street Journal. He combined this and art school until World War I took him into the Army. In infantry, field artillery and ordnance duties he served with the 27th New York Division through St. Mihiel and the Argonne and the rest—in the process getting his hearing clobbered by blasts from his outfit’s own guns. In 1969 she was successful in applying for a job at Utopia school where she stayed for 20 years. During that time she worked on batik, and then started painting as part of CAAMA's Summer Project in 1988-89. In 1996 Kathleen won the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award (NATSIAA) and her painting career blossomed from there. She has been exhibited overseas numerous times and in 2001 had a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney. In general, her work is minimalistic and characterised by the fine dotting technique she uses to represent mental maps of her country. Her signature work is the Mountain or Thorny Devil Lizard Dreaming, which gives a unique representation of this small creature's travels across Kathleen's country during the Creation era. Another signature genre is Bush Seeds. Kathleen Petyarre is a blood sister of the respected artists Gloria, Violet and Ada Bird Petyarre, a great niece of the feted Emily Kame Kngwarreye and skin sister to Jeannie and Rosemary Petyarre. She is extensively exhibited in public and private galleries. Kathleen spent her time between Alice Springs and her home country, Utopia. This very large and colorful Aboriginal painting is a diptych (2 canvases) and can be displayed horizontally or vertically. This painting depicts the creation of the Lander River system. It includes elements and stories from the artist's family kinship system. The canvases represent the journey from the artist's home country, Willowra, to two soakages at Purtulu (Mount Theo) in his mother' s country. Purtulu in the Warlpiri language means “backbone.” Two Dreaming Goannas are shown at either end of the canvases. The "U" shapes of the goanna echo the traditional "U" shapes used in Aboriginal design to represent seated Ancestors. The country in between represents the plains where the goanna hunts, using spinifex grass as protection. To get easy access to goannas and to revitalize the land, the country must be burned off seasonally. It is the responsibility of the kirda (owner) to ensure that the land is burned off regularly by the kurdungulu (caretaker). The left canvas depicts the Owl Dreaming. The stylized face of the Owl can be discerned in the design. The right canvas portrays Warna, Snake Dreaming. The snake, with its sinuous shape, is symbolic of the river and the waterways. A more realistic representation of the Lander River system, with its forks and pools, is illustrated by the blue line which runs through the center of the canvases. She started a greeting card company called House of K.H.S. in Los Angeles together with Vivian Stringfiled and Fannie Kerns. They made handpainted greeting cards, using wood block print methods, for all seasons of the year. Inspired by the Arts & Crafts Movement and incorporating modernist aesthetics, they used their skills to produce wonderful one-of-a-kind cards. Not only were they friends, artists, and business owners, they took part in a three woman exhibit at the Museum of History, Science, and Art, Los Angeles (now LACMA) in 1918 titled An Exhibit of Decorative Landscapes by Fannie M Kerns, Vivian F.
