Springer received training as a house painter from the house and carriage painter Andries de Wit and from his eldest brother, who was an architect, lessons in architectural drawing and perspective.

Johannes Bosboom was born in The Hague in 1817.
During his lifetime, Johannes Bosboom would become one of the best-known painters of church interiors. His work has been much appreciated over time.
He received his training from Romantic masters such as Bart van Hove and Wijnand Nuijen. Johannes Bosboom also took lessons at the Hague Drawing Academy.
He showed his preference for the church interior at an early age. He made several journeys in his early years as an artist. In 1835 he visited Germany and in 1837 he traveled to France via Antwerp, where he worked mainly in Rouen and Paris.
In 1851 he married the writer Anna Bosboom-Toussaint.
He is considered a precursor of the 'Hague School'.
The masterful way in which he used light in his church interiors made him one of the most important European painters in this genre.

Régis Francois Gignoux was a distinguished nineteenth-century artist whose work illuminated the sublime aspects of the American landscape. He was born in Lyon, France and trained at the Academie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where his instructor, the history painter Paul-Hipployte Delaroche, encouraged his interest in landscape painting. He traveled to the United States in 1840, and immediately showed interest in American Landscapes. He immediately settled in New York and painted many well known sites of the United States: Niagara Falls, the Catskill Mountains, Mount Washington, and Mammoth Cave, Kentucky. He is most famous for his winter scenes, but shows beautiful landscapes year round. Gignoux quickly established himself within the leading Hudson River School circles of the time. This 19th cent wc depicts Charles Darwin in the Beagle’s Tender, Coastal Patagonia, Argentina.
The son of an English mother and the Austrian Consul General in London, Conrad Martens pursued a career in painting following his father’s death in 1816. From the age of sixteen he studied under landscape watercolourist Copley Fielding, absorbing the traditions of the English watercolour school and Joshua Reynolds’ theories on painting. In 1833 Martens joined the HMS Beagle on a scientific survey expedition at Montevideo, South America, as ship’s artist, replacing the ailing Augustus Earle. He befriended the ship’s naturalist, Charles Darwin, whose empirical observation of landscape forms and climatic conditions would influence Martens’ practice.
Martens left the Beagle in Valparaiso in 1834 and travelled to Australia via New Zealand and Tahiti, settling in Sydney in 1835 and setting up a studio in Pitt Street. Patronised by the colonial elite, he fulfilled many commissions for watercolours of the local landscape and Sydney Harbour, including Elizabeth Bay c1838, which features the grand neoclassical edifice of Elizabeth Bay House, built for the former colonial secretary...
