"Entering the Bus" Expressionist Figurative Composition Original Oil on Canvas
Dynamic figurative composition by Bay area Figural, Abstract expressionist and notable Burning Man artist Jakob Bokulich (American, b. 1974). Several figures are crowded together, some of which are nude. Others are wearing typical clothing, and appear to be going out their daily lives. The expressive, slightly distorted faces and close placement of the figures is reminiscent of some of Francisco Goya's paintings.
Titled, dated, and signed on verso: "Entering the Bus" May, 1992 Jake Bokulich
No frame, but the artist has affixed black tape to the edges.
Jakob Bokulich (1974, Santa Cruz, CA) is a self-trained, multi-disciplinary artist known for his paintings and kinetic sculptures. His work is in the collection of the Croatian Embassy in Paris, and he was awarded an Honorarium grant in 2018 by Burning Man for his 21 foot-tall sculpture "Big Pollinator," which was years in the making and involved the work of over 100 volunteers.
The son of an auto mechanic, Bokulich began painting at age 12 after a house fire left his family homeless and he stayed temporarily with a local landscape painter. At 17 he left home for Europe - his art education was living in art squats and artist communities, and immersing himself in the museums and galleries of Europe. Drawing inspiration from living in a war zone in Croatia between 1993-1995, he exhibited in galleries in Paris, Saint-Tropez, Chamonix, and Split, Croatia.
Transitioning back to the U.S, the artist helped build artist communities in San Francisco and Oakland, being deeply involved in spaces such as Cellspace, The Artship, and The Creamery. In this phase of his practice, Bokulich explored performance and ritual, co-writing and performing in the film Hysteria by Antero Alli. This prompted his stay in LA working in film and set design. In 2015 the seasoned and well rounded artist moved to New York City to return to a studio practice, now informed by his experiences in ritual, meditation, and unconventional self exploration. Bokulich’s work reinforces modes of seeing in a world where the senses have become neglected.

Tom Hamil, was born in New York in 1928 and raised primarily in California. After attending the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, he returned to California to begin his formal art training at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco (now known as the San Francisco Art Institute). He completed his education at the University of Washington with a Master’s Degrees and Doctorate in Fine Arts and Education. His first solo exhibition was held in 1956. Since then, he has participated in numerous one man shows, group shows, and has been represented in galleries in the US and Mexico.
In addition to his painting, Hamil has authored and illustrated a number of books. While at the Naval Academy, he received recognition for his paintings, drawings, and illustrations. Listed among Hamil’s many awards and honors are a Ford Foundation Fellowship and an Award of Excellence from the American Graphics Society.

Lajos Flesser was born on Aug. 11, 1937 in Budapest, where he grew up in the shadow of World War II. In his late teens he studied at trade school, concentrating on metal skills. His need of communication made him start boxing, and the success was long in coming. In boxing circles, Flesser became a well established name with a couple of Hungarian championships.
Then came the fatal year 1956, when Soviet tanks crushed the dreams of freedom. Flesser escaped and came to Sweden via Denmark.
In Gothenburg the well known boxing promoter Edvin Alqvist soon became aware of Flesser's capacity as a boxer and offered him a contract. His debut occurred in May 1957...

Phillip received a BFA degree in painting from the Kansas City Art Institute, Kansas City, Missouri in 1972. Studied two years under painting department chairman, Wilbur Niewald. While attending school in Kansas City he became intrigued with the impressionist school of painting and their use of nature as a source of information for their work. Using the infinite variations of nature in the still life, figure and landscape, the artist is presented with limitless subject matter. Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro and other painters of nature were earlier influences on Phillip's work. Dealing with ever-changing elements of nature, movement of light and shadow in the landscape, field workers finishing their tasks, Phillip adopted a broken color style of applying paint to his canvas. This approach allowed the image on the canvas to be developed quickly, and all at one time.
Phillip has lived and painted in the Northwest since 1989. His long desire to paint the subject matter of the impressionists painters and his belief that beautiful subject matter increases the probability of painting beautiful paintings, inspired two painting trips to Mexico and ten trips to Europe. In April of 2007, April of 2008 and again in 2014, a rented boat on the Canal du Midi, France served as a form of transportation, a floating studio and hotel. This artwork "Sitting Nude" c.1990, is an oil painting on hardboard panel by noted American artist Howard Rogers, b.1932. It is signed at the lower right corner by the artist. The artwork (panel) size is 8.85 x 11.85 inches, framed size is 17.75 x 21 inches. Framed in original wooden gold and grey frame, with fabric liner and gold bevel. It is in excellent condition, the frame have very small minor restorations, practically invisible.
About the artist:
Howard Rogers wanted to be an artist for as long as he could remember. "I had no idea what an artist was when I was a kid," he laughs. "But I had a distant cousin who had gone to art school and I saw some of his drawings. They really impressed me." Born and raised in San Diego, California, Rogers now focuses on the future: "I kind of enjoy today and tomorrow and to heck with yesterday."
While in high school, Rogers took some art classes and served as an apprentice sign painter, eventually becoming a journeyman. He was also a member of his high school track team, competing in the high jump, the hurdles and cross-country, as well as doing some bike racing. Following a stint in the Army, he began training for the Olympics in bike racing, trying out in 1948, 1952 and 1956. Today, "I ride a stationary bike in front of my easel three times a week."

Termeh Yeghiazarian was born in Tehran and moved to the US in 1978. From 1991, she made San Francisco her home, becoming an active member of the Bay Area art scene as artist, teacher and activist.
Yeghiazarian received her BA from the Academy of Art and her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. She was involved in the creation of the San Francisco Art and Culture Committee and in the establishment of community gatherings and cultural events that included First Fridays, Salons and the production of plays by Golden Thread Productions of which she was a co-founder.

Enrique (Kico) Govantes was born in Havana, Cuba in 1957 surrounded by art. His grandfather was the Minister of Public Works, his father an architect. Paul Smart wrote in his article on Govantes, “Ace of Cups,” (Ulster Publishing. April 28, 2005) that although they did not support the Batista regime, the Govantes were exiled from Castro’s Cuba with only the art they could carry in their suitcases. A Californian whose work is of preeminent importance during the post war period, Oliveira is most often associated with Park, Diebenkorn and the other artists with whom he sketched early in his career. Yet it was not an oversight when Oakland Museum director Paul Mills chose not to include Oliveira in the 1957 exhibition “Contemporary Bay Area Figurative Painting.” All came to figuration by initiating a sophisticated dialogue with abstraction, yet it is Oliveira, the often characterized ambivalent loner among Bay Area artists whose work is most often compared to Alberto Giacometti, Francis Bacon, or Willem de Kooning with whom he shared walls and space at The Images of Man exhibition held in New York at the Museum of Modern Art in 1959.
During the early years, Oliveira’s lone figures often suggested an existential angst similar to that of Giacometti, but there was also a weightlessness and a transcendent aura that envelopes these figures; they appear as elemental, universal and eternal projections of selfless consciousness better understood within the bodiless realm of metaphysics. These qualities would remain in his work throughout his long career, yet he would find other themes to explore — the natural world where the essential nature of birds and animals exist in equal profundity with their human counterparts, the transient world of evanescent perception when memory must reconstruct momentary experience, and later, the ‘site’ paintings and monoprints that suggest the abandoned remnants of a long-lost civilization or tribe uncovered at an archeological dig.
Through and through, flesh to bones, and bones to dust Nathan Oliveira has left us with a legacy of art that will surely remain untarnished by time or changing trends. His work exists within a realm rarely achieved by artists striving in a similar mode of expression. Unclouded by ego or wayward sentiment, it is also in the warmth and humble nature...
