Frank J. Reilly (1906-1967) was noted as "the number 1 art teacher in America." Reilly is noted for developing a means of organizing the palette. His value studies and chroma organization are still taught as the primary methods of oil paint organization. Reilly studied with Frank DuMond at the Art Students League of New York. He taught at the Grand Central School of Art, The Art Students League of New York and other art schools as well as establishing his own art school. Reilly was the main influence on George Passantino. Jack Welch was a tall Texan from Cleburne. He went through public school in Temple, Texas, took the W. L. Evans correspondence course in cartooning, and did a short turn at Southern Methodist University illustrating yearbooks. Richard Wedderspoon was an important member of the New Hope Art Colony as both an Impressionist and Modernist painter. Wedderspoon was not only a respected painter, but also a teacher who spent summers at his Bucks County home and the school year at Syracuse University where he was Professor of painting. He was born in Red Bank, New Jersey and first studied art at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh. He continued his studies at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, and at age twenty four, he enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts studying with Henry McCarter and Daniel Garber. During his over four decades as the preeminent illustrator for The Saturday Evening Post, Joseph Christian Leyendecker's clever illustrations were eagerly anticipated by enthusiastic readership across the country, and none more so than his holiday designs. One of Leyendecker's most celebrated creations was his groundbreaking idea of the New Year's Baby. Originally portrayed as a fleshy sweet-faced child complete with tiny angel wings, the New Year's Baby gradually morphed into a worldly tot acutely aware of the social and political issues facing the nation at the time. In fact, Leyendecker's final Post cover illustration was the 1943 New Year's Baby.
Following the success of these Post covers, the artist was hired to create advertisements for the American Oil Company (AMOCO). Throughout the 1940s and through the final years of his life, Leyendecker produced ads incorporating his famed New Year's Baby into AMOCO advertisements, as in the present work, Happy Landing...

Artist Biography: Otis Dozier (1904-1987) was raised on a cotton farm between Forney and Mesquite, developing a love for art and nature at a young age. After his family moved into Dallas in 1920, he received his earliest art training from well-known instructor Vivian Aunspaugh. Following his 1925 graduation from Forest High School, Dozier continued his art studies at the Dallas Art Institute with Olin Travis and Tom Stell. Also, during the 1920s, he accompanied his parents and three sisters on at least three automobile trips through the American West, familiarizing himself with the region that he would later depict in his art.
