Sam Gilliam Handmade Paper "Untitled #34" Acrylic. Signed & Dated
Located in Detroit, MI
SALE ONE WEEK ONLY “Untitled #34” was created by Sam Gilliam, one of the great innovators in postwar American painting. It is dated and signed on the lower front. The thick handmade paper is rich with folds and texture and the colors lively. In addition to Acrylic paint on the surface there appears to be imbedded color in the handmade paper which has additional embossed accents. Unframed the piece measures 16 x 14. Provenance of Yaw Gallery, Birmingham, Michigan is on the verso along with the note that the Paper Surfaces in contact with this artwork are acid free. In the mid-1960s he emerged from the Washington D.C. scene with works that elaborated upon and disrupted the ethos of Color School painting. A series of formal breakthroughs would soon result in his canonical Drape paintings, which expanded upon the tenets of Abstract Expressionism in entirely new ways. One profound manner was the sculpture aspect of the painting giving it a free flowing expression of pure color. In the latter half of the 1950s, Washington D.C. saw a flourishing of abstract art that emphasized the form-making capabilities of pure color. Known as The Washington Color School, the loosely affiliated group of abstract painters knew each other through various teaching experiences. The moniker has an uncertain origin but likely originated with the title of a 1965 exhibition at the Washington Gallery of Modern Art, "Washington Color Painters," curated by Gerald Nordland. The show exhibited the works of Kenneth Noland, Paul Reed, Morris Louis, Howard Mehring, Thomas Downing, and Gene Davis. Additionally, Leon Berkowitz...

'Playing with Socks', San Francisco Women's College, San Francisco Art Institute
Located in Santa Cruz, CA
Signed lower right, 'Storer' for Inez May Storer (American, born 1933) and dated 1978. Inez Storer first studied at the San Francisco College for Women, the San Francisco Art Institute and the University of California at Berkeley. She later earned a bachelor's degree at Dominican College in San Rafael and, in 1971, a graduate degree in at California State University in San Francisco. From Inverness, California, north of San Francisco and working from a studio in Point Reyes, Inez Storer creates mixed-media narrative paintings, collages and assemblages in naive-sophisticated style, which she describes as Magic Realism: "I am a visual raconteur. I use paint to tell stories." Most of these stories are explorations of the human condition with characters who seem allegorically to be walking tightropes. She gets many ideas from her studio collection of old postcards, toys, photos and other random items that she often incorporates into her work. Inez Storer is also known for her prints and drawings. Storer was born in Los Angeles to German parents who left that country in 1933 to avoid Hitler. Her father got a job in Hollywood with Billy Wilder as an art director, and her mother was an actress and dancer. Inez spent much time as a child on movie sets. She was raised a Catholic as her parents wanted no one to know her mother was Jewish and uses Catholic imagery in her work. In 1974, she met Andrew Romanoff, a Russian artist who became her second husband. In this marriage, she became a part of Russian royalty because Andrew was the grand nephew of the Czar Nicholas II, Russia's last emperor...

"Challenge at Dawn" - Landscape with Elk in Watercolor on Paper
By Gregory McHuron
Located in Soquel, CA
"Challenge at Dawn" - Landscape with Elk in Watercolor on Paper Serene landscape with an elk by Greg McHuron (American, 1945-2012). An elk stand to the right side of the composition, looking back over it's shoulder towards the viewer. To the left of the elk, a calm river winds away from the viewer in to the distance, where mist and clouds partially obscure a rocky mountain. The sky is bright blue with streaks of yellow sunlight illuminating the clouds. Signed in the lower right corner. Artist's tag (with signature, date and title) and gallery tag on verso, Presented in a wood frame with a double mat. Frame size: 20.75"H x 17"W Image size: 14"H x 10"W Gregory Ivan McHuron (American, 1945-2012) was a plein-air painter working in oil and watercolor/gouache. He was born in Syracuse NY but was raised in Colorado, Wyoming, Alaska and California. His education included 4 years of extensive high school training by a teacher who graduated from the Berlin Art Academy. He also attended Oregon State University where he took classes in forestry, fisheries and wildlife and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Art from Oregon State University. Introduced to plein-air painting in oil in 1973 by Conrad "Connie" Schwiering, he quickly found that he enjoyed painting the rapidly changing scenes. It allowed him to put in his paintings the feelings and excitement that he felt while watching the scene unfold which created more drama and excitement than he would have been able to do in a studio environment. He has traveled widely including much of Alaska; in wilderness areas in WY and CO; down the Colorado River through Grand Canyon NP; to British Columbia and Alberta, Canada; and on extended boat trips along the west coast from Port Ludlow, Washington to Glacier Bay, AK going in and out of the fjords. He honed his understanding and knowledge of animals not only from college classes he took but also from the everyday study and observation of the wildlife in the Jackson, Grand Teton NP and Yellowstone NP areas. In addition for many years, he drew and studied wild animals at the Okanagan Game Farm in Penticton, British Columbia, Canada. Every summer and fall a group of artists would go to the Game Farm kibitzing, painting and drawing the wildlife. He taught workshops, gave demonstrations and participated in quick-draws for a variety of organizations including Wyoming Artists Association, Wind River Artist Association, Scottsdale School of the Arts, The Lodge at Palisades, National Museum of Wildlife Art, CM Russell Show, Grand Teton National Park and Isle Royale...

Daisy - bright, colourful, expressive, gestural abstract, acrylic on paper
Located in Bloomfield, ON
In this expressive, colourful abstract by Milly Ristvedt a melange of complementary colours appear to dance across the paper. Ristvedt is a master colourist and this painting from the seventies shows her early skills at juxtaposing colour—generous brush strokes of pink, turquoise, green, blue, red, orange and burgundy. Art Critic Barry Lord (Art in America) declared that Ristvedt’s paintings ‘were more insistent than Bush, more consciously structured than Molinari.’ “(I have an) enduring belief in colour in painting as a language that can speak to mind, body, and soul.” Milly Ristvedt Born in British Columbia, Ristvedt studied at the Vancouver School of Art (now the Emily Carr University) and had her first solo exhibit at the Carmen Lamanna Gallery in Toronto. In the late 1960s, Ristvedt shared a studio with famed Canadian painter Jack Bush, met art critic Clement Greenberg and was inspired by American painters Jules Olitiski and Frank Stella. Her work has been included in many publications. She was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 2004 and honoured with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. She has won seven Canada Council awards and two Ontario Arts Council awards and had over 50 solo exhibitions and been part of countless group shows. Ristvedt's work can be found in major public collections throughout North America. Milly Ristvedt is represented exclusively by the Oeno Gallery.

African American Realist Oil Painting Baseball Outsider Folk Art Andrew Turner
By Andrew Turner
Located in Surfside, FL
Title: Home Run Genre: Realism, sports, baseball Subject: People Medium: Oil (this might be acrylic, it feels like oil) on canvas Country: United States Dimensions: framed 23 X 25 sight 17.5 X 19.5 Provenance: Sande Webster Gallery in Philadelphia (bears label verso) Faintly signed lower right (see photos) Andrew Turner was born in 1944 in Chester, Pennsylvania. He was a graduate of Temple University Tyler School of Art. Andrew’s work has been widely acclaimed, with many solo exhibitions and participation in group exhibitions. He has taught art in grades K-12 in the Chester, Pennsylvania Public Schools and in correctional centers. His appointments include Artist-in-Residence and Curator, Deshong Museum, Chester, PA; Lecturer, Widener University; Lecturer, Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA; and, he toured and lectured in The People’s Republic of China. Andrew’s paintings are included in the collections of Woody Allen, Dr. Maya Angelou, ARCO Chemical Company, Bell Telephone Company, Dr. Constance Clayton, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Cosby, Edie Huggins, the artist previously known as Prince, Maya Angelou, Eric Lindros, Mr. and Mrs Louis Madonni, Moses Malone, Penn State University, Prince, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Sorgenti, Swarthmore College, Mrs. Marilyn Wheaton, and Widener University Deshong Museum, just to name a few. He has been featured in numerous solo exhibitions and group exhibitions in the United States and abroad. In an interview prior to his death in 2001, Turner noted, "My paintings combine the drama inherent in seventeenth century Dutch painting with the brush work and the economy of the Impressionists. However, I look to the jazz idiom more so than to other contemporary visual artists for guidance and inspiration. I tend to measure the success of my pieces by how they stand up technically, emotionally and innovatively to a John Coltrane solo or whether I've captured the spirit of the occasion, a la Duke Ellington. The subject matter, sometimes nostalgic recollections of my days as a young tough, covers a myriad of common folk activities. This one is reminiscent of Purvis Young. "The setting, usually my native Chester, is a beehive of creative stimulation or a deteriorating ghetto depending on my state of mind. At the very least, hopefully, these vignettes of experience will help to provide insight into some African American lifestyles and serve as an inspiration to my students and others to continue the legacy of African American participation in the arts." Folk Artist, Outsider artist, Folk Art. His work is from the true original street artist such as Purvis Young and the early Brooklyn street art Jean Michel Basquiat. “My paintings combine the drama inherent in seventeenth century Dutch painting with the brush work and the economy of the Impressionists. However, The setting usually my native Chester, is a beehive of creative stimulation or a deteriorating ghetto depending on my state of mind. At the very least, hopefully, these vignettes of experience will help to provide insight into some African American lifestyles and serve as an inspiration to my students and others to continue the legacy of African American participation in the arts.” He was included in the seminal show PHILADELPHIA (PA). Woodmere Art Museum. In Search of Missing Masters: The Lewis Tanner Moore Collection of African American Art. September 28, 2008-February 22, 2009. Handmade Paper Collage Sculpture Art Assemblage with String Nancy Genn Modernist
Located in Surfside, FL
Nancy Genn, American (b. 1929) Marshfield 25 (1977) Handmade paper collage Hand signed verso Dimensions: 20 1/8 x 22 inches Utilizing what is now known as the 'Genn Method,' Nancy Genn created three-dimensional abstract works of handmade paper, gaining international recognition in the 1970s Nancy Genn is an American artist living and working in Berkeley, California known for works in a variety of media, including paintings, bronze sculpture, printmaking, and handmade paper rooted in the Japanese washi paper making tradition. Her work explores geometric abstraction, non-objective form, and calligraphic mark making, and features light, landscape, water, and architecture motifs. She is influenced by her extensive travels, and Asian craft, aesthetics and spiritual traditions. Nancy Genn was born in 1929 in San Francisco, California. She recognized early that she would pursue a career as an artist. Her mother, Ruth Wetmore Thompson Whitehouse, was a painter and UC Berkeley alumna who played a leadership role in the San Francisco Women Artists organization. Genn studied at San Francisco Art Institute (then California School of Fine Arts) with painter Hassel Smith, and at the Art Department at the University of California, Berkeley (1948–49) with Professors Margaret Peterson and John Haley, and fellow students Sam Francis and Sonya Rapoport. In 1949 she married Vernon “Tom” Genn, an engineer raised in Japan, with whom she had three children. Career Genn's first noted solo exhibition was in 1955 at Gump's Gallery in San Francisco. She received international recognition through her inclusion in French art critic Michel Tapié’s seminal text Morphologie Autre (1960), which cited her as one of the most important exponents of post-war informal art. In 1961, Genn began creating bronze sculptures using the lost-wax casting method. Influenced by noted sculptor and family friend Claire Falkenstein, who used open-formed structures in her work, Genn cast forms woven from long grape vine cuttings, and produced vessels, fountains, fire screens, a menorah, a lectern, and, notably, the Cowell Fountain (1966) at UC Santa Cruz. In 1963 her sculptural work was exhibited with Berkeley artists Peter Voulkos and Harold Paris in the influential exhibition Creative Casting curated by Paul J. Smith at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts, New York. Genn was one of the first American artists to express herself through handmade paper, first receiving wide recognition via exhibitions at Susan Caldwell Gallery, New York, beginning in 1977, and in traveling exhibitions with Robert Rauschenberg and Sam Francis. In 1978-1979, supported by the National Endowment for the Arts and Japan Creative Arts Fellowship, she studied papermaking in Japan, visiting local paper craftspeople, working in Shikenjo studio in Saitama Prefecture, and exhibiting her work in Tokyo. She also learned techniques from Donald Farnsworth...

Mid Century Modern Abstract Expressionist Gino Hollander Oil on Canvas Painting
Located in New York, NY
This sophisticated and large scale Mid Century Modern abstract expressionistic oil on canvas painting was realized by the esteemed 20th century visual artist and filmmaker Gino Hollander (1924-2015), in the United States in 1974. In dialogue with other canonized visualized artists of the period, most notably Joan Mitchell, this painting offers a dynamic composition in an understated and vibrant palette using a variety of painterly techniques. Executed in predominantly in grisaille and flaxen hues with ecru and amber accents, the composition features turpentine rivulets of running pigment; chunky blocks of paint rendered with a palette knife; and delicately applied brush strokes against a painted white background. The result is a captivatingly layered work that offers sustained visual pleasure and abundant visual discoveries. The solid white background adds negative space but also breath and depth to the composition. Full of verve and dynamism- and exhibiting masterful paint handling-, this painting embodies the qualities that discerning collectors of Abstract Expressionism (and modern art in general) absolutely adore. It would be a winning addition to any style of interior from classic Mid Century Modern to contemporary. It is signed and dated by the artist, and is in excellent vintage condition. The work comes presented in a custom black inked gallery frame. Gino Hollander was born in the New Jersey in 1924 and attended Rutgers University as well Hobart and William Smith College. He had two very different careers before he began painting – the first as part of the U.S. Army’s Mountain Division Ski Troop, and the second, an award-winning director and documentary filmmaker. Demonstrating his artistic versatility, Gino Hollander took up painting in 1960. From 1960 to 1962, Gino ran his first Hollander Gallery...
