Hillside Patterns
Located in Lawrence, NY
Gouache on paper signed en verso Throughout his sixty-year artistic career, David Hayes created sculptural forms abstracted from organic forms encountered in daily life. He first studied with American sculptor David Smith, who was among the first to work with welded steel. Hayes' sculptures have affinities to Alexander Calder's playful stabiles (Hayes met Calder in Paris) and to the shapes and colors of Matisse's late paper cutouts. Hayes works are firmly rooted in modern artists' interests in industrial materials and in commercial fabrication processes. He has had more than 400 exhibitions of his work. His work is in more than 70 museum collections, including MOMA and the Guggenheim. Throughout his career, Hayes painted models for his sculptures and sculptural-like landscapes of the geography surrounding his home in Northwestern Connecticut. In these landscapes, the gently rolling hills become modernist forms and shapes, recognizable as landscapes but also as explorations of shape and color. These are intriguing works of art in and of themselves. Lawrence Fine Art...

Latin American , Brazilian Surrealist Painting Carlos Kis after Rene Magritte
Located in Surfside, FL
Framed 28 X 28 sight 23 X 23 "Veterans", 1988, paint, inlay, with monogram signature on formica board Framed: 28 x 28 in. Sight: 22 1/2 x 22 1/2 in. This painting is after Surrealist master Rene Magritte. It depicts men with bowler hats Carlos Kis, 1932-2010 a well known Brazilian artist. Kis was born in Uruguay to a Romanian Jewish family and moved to Brazil where he was well known for his painting and sculpture. His formica paintings were an extremely laborious process and the media has not been used by other artists other than that of his daughter Anita, under Kis's supervision. Known as a painter, watercolorist and graphic artist Carlos Kis artworks show the surreal, modern and expressionist aspects of his inexhaustible talent and imagination. Inspired by Surrealism he developed Sinapsism. Kis studied at the Faculty of Architecture of the Universidad de la República (UdelaR) and at the Instituto de Profesores Artigas. For three years he ran the art gallery Opus in Brasília , then was director of a fashion magazine, worked as an interior designer and in the design department of an automotive company. Initially painting on canvas, he refrained from doing this during a five-year stay in New York in the 1970s and increasingly turned to works of art made from the artificial material Formica than baked into an enamel at high temperature. The Cyanamid company provided him with the necessary materials. In 1995, the Art of Living magazine devoted an extensive story to his works in Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Punta del Este, New York, Guarujá, Porto Alegre, Joinville, São Paulo and Mexico City among others. In 1960, he came to Brazil and lived in São Paulo for ten years. In this city, he released several albums of his own: Razão & Coração e Galos e Galos, 1966; IV Screenprints, 1968; and Woodcuts by Carlos Kis, 1969. After spending four years in New York (United States), he settled permanently in the city of Santos SP, in 1975. He is the creator of paintinlay, a technique of painting on pressed formica and submitted to high temperatures. Reviews "Carlos Kis exposes his painting, populated by madonnas, roosters and images, a threshold between the real and the fantastic, a mystical force that exerts a fascination on the public, the result of a cosmopolitan experience, from Yugoslav ancestry, to coming to Brazil and the departure for the United States. The five years he lived in New York put him in direct contact with the busy world of megalopolises, at the same time in search of explanations - like the primitive ones - in the fantastic. Magics, fetishes, myths , symbols, become strong in a new trend". Roberto Peres CARLOS Kis: oils and prints. Texts by Delmiro Gonçalves, Roberto Peres, Dottie Campbell and Thomaz S. Corrêa. Brasília: Itau Galeria, 1978. "He is a man of the world and a 'creature of the universe', as Dottie Campbell asserts in 'Reviews' in New York. This universalism gives him conditions to produce a 'sui generis' style in painting. Various phases have marked the career of the artist He still now paints on Formica, not in the traditional Formica found in stores, but in a pressing process he calls 'paintinlay.' For this exhibition, Carlos Kiss prepared figures (a series of Mona Lisa, the posture of the model), still life, which the artist calls silent, all in water-quenching-and-oil. The result is in good taste and reveals the 'deep self' of the sensitive artist". Paulo Augusto Bueno Wolf CARLOS Kis: painting. Presentation by Paulo Augusto Bueno Wolf and Jorge Amado. His childhood household cherished the customs and Slavic folk tales from the Old Country that later strongly influenced his work as a professional artist. This vibrant colorful painting is fully hand signed, dated and titled verso. It might be acrylic but it looks like oil or enamel ad I have seen it described thusly. This listing is for 1 painting. the last image shows all 4 that I have hung as grouping. Charles Sidney Clough (born February 2, 1951, in Buffalo, New York) is an American painter. His art has been exhibited in over 70 solo and over 150 group exhibitions throughout North America and Europe and is included in the permanent collections of over 70 museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, and Smithsonian American Art Museum. Charles Clough was born and raised in Buffalo, New York where he attended Hutchinson Central Technical High School. He then attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn from 1969-1970 where the two-dimensional design teacher Joseph Phillips, introduced Artforum magazine to him. Clough dropped out and on January 5, 1971 decided that he would devote his life to art. He traded his sculptor's assistant services for studio space with artist Larry W. Griffis Jr., at the Ashford Hollow Foundation's 30 Essex Street former ice-house facility. From 1971-1972 he attended the Ontario College of Art and was introduced to the artists and galleries of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. By 1973 many of the University at Buffalo's and Buffalo State's art professors had rented studios at 30 Essex Street. One of these, Joseph Panone, brought his student, Robert Longo and introduced him to Clough, which resulted in the program of exhibitions and artists' visits which became Hallwalls in 1974. Minimalist Black Oil Painting, Collage, Mixed Media on Canvas Kevin Larmon
Located in Surfside, FL
Kevin Larmon, (American, b. 1955), 1985-1986, oil on canvas; hand signed, titled, and dated on the reverse Provenance: bear a Curt Marcos Gallery label verso This is one of a pair we are offering for sale Kevin Larmon (1955-) is an American artist and was assistant monitor of painting at Syracuse University. Kevin Larmon was born in Syracuse, New York in 1955. He grew up on a small horse farm. Larmon's mother was a school secretary while his father was a construction worker. He graduated from Binghamton University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and moved to New York City as an undergraduate senior, where he finished his schooling at the New York Studio School. In the late 1970s, Larmon played guitar for Mudmen, a three piece band in the East Village of New York City with Craig Gillis playing bass, Mike Caffes playing drums, and percussionist Jill Burkhart. Mudmen played in venues such as CBGB, Danceteria, A7 (bar), Pyramid Club, Mudd Club, and The Limelight. Larmon started making still life paintings in 1979. He has also worked with atmospheric drawings and paintings since 1989, many of which are made on canvas or wood. In 2009, he began to paint his cell paintings. Larmon's paintings are built up through layers of collage and paint. Most famously, Larmon's work includes collages of gay male pornography that have been painted over with images that exist somewhere in between abstraction and form. These images are often anatomical. Conceptually, Larmon's work deals with issues such as the male body image and fascist culture. Similarly, Larmon's drawings on wood deal with ambiguously anatomical and abstracted forms. His work has been associated with the post-conceptualism and neo-conceptual art movements, which were prominent aspects of exhibitions at Gallery Nature Morte and with Tricia Collins and Richard Milazzo shaping the nature of painting after the rise of conceptual art. Larmon was also associated with Feature Inc., a gallery that was first established in Chicago in 1984. In August 1988, the gallery's director, known as Hudson, moved Feature Inc. to New York City. Larmon's first exhibition with Feature Inc. occurred in 1987 in Chicago, Illinois. Over the years, Hudson and Larmon would work together on many exhibitions. As a young artist, Larmon spent his Thursdays working to sustain Gallery Nature Morte together with the gallery owners, Alan Becher and Peter Nagy, when the gallery existed in New York City. Larmon was heavily influenced by his contemporaries at Gallery Nature Morte such as Robin Weglinski, Joel Otterson, and Steven Parrino. Other influential artists include Oliver Wasow, Robert Gober, Nancy Shaver, Carter Hodgkin, and Steven Wolfe. Large Spanish Contemporary Juan Suarez Abstract Bold Painting Triptych Group
Located in Surfside, FL
Juan Suarez (Spanish, b. 1946) Naturaleza Muerta, Mixed media painting on three assembled canvases, (triptych) It is either oil or acrylic paint. it seems like oil to me. A label verso has it indicated as acrylic. Dimensions: 64 1/8 W: 64 1/4 in. Provenance: The Cleveland Museum of Art (bears label verso); Galerie Juana de Aizpuru Gallery (bears label verso). Born in Puerto de Santa María (Cádiz). Studies at the ETSA and at the Superior School of Fine Arts of Santa Isabel of Hungary in Seville. Grant from the Juan March Foundation in 1976. Advanced studies in Architecture and Fine Arts, University of Seville. Although he was not born in Seville, Juan Suárez is a member of the group of painters from the city who, in the seventies, linked their artistic practice, based fundamentally on painting, to international tendencies. Rather than a set of intellectual ideas, José Ramón Sierra, Gerardo Delgado and Juan Suárez shared a life experience: they were all students at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura in Seville and were all interested in art. Juan Suárez also studied at the Fine Arts Faculty. He held his first individual exhibition at Galería Juana de Aizpuru in 1970. (They were an important contemporary art gallery in Seville spain and showed Wolfgang Tillmans, Georg Dokoupil, Jordi Colomer, Albert Oehlen, Eduardo Chillida and Andres Serrano). In 1982 his work was shown in Diez Pintores Sevillanos, together with Manuel Salinas (1940) and Ignacio Tovar (1947), among others. At various points his worked has been shaped by American Abstract Expressionist painting, Latin American Geometric Abstraction and by Constructivist painting and sculpture. In 1976 he received a grant from Fundación March, and in 1980 another from CINFE at the Ministry of Culture. He was awarded the Drawing Prizes at the Nuremberg Biennial (1979) and ARTEDER 82, the Premio de Pintura from the Diputación Provincial de Sevilla, also in 1982, and the Premio de los Festivales de Navarra in 1985. The Geometric spirit that is ever-present in his work and his perpetual curiosity lead him to incorporate materials from a very wide range of sources; composing some pieces with superimposed planes where abstraction is a key actor. His background in architectural practice and his constant demand for excellence profoundly shape his work. In his work, the influences of Barnett Newman, Jules Olitski, Kenneth Noland and, especially, Richard Diebenkorn can be appreciated. However, Juan Suárez moves away, at the same time, from the uniform vibration of color fields and the structural rigidity of closed compositions, alternating both concepts, from an emotional and poetic perspective. The density of the color dialogues with drippings and suggestive liquidiscent stains, while reserves and sharp lines make up and hold the pictorial structure. He writes in different magazines and specialized books on art and architecture. Ibiza woman Spain spanish oil on canvas painting portrait
By Mariano Tur de Montis
Located in Barcelona, Barcelona
Frame size 83x73 cm. Mariano Tur de Montis (Ibiza 1904 -1994). Son of the Ibizan general Don Juan Tur y Palau, of an old patrician family on the island, and of Doña Cristina de Montis and von der Klee. Ibiza painter who felt great admiration for the Spanish classics and the influence of Central European painting of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and especially that of the painter Manuel Benedito. He received multiple praises in his various artistic exhibitions not only in Ibiza, but also in Palma de Mallorca, Mahón, Barcelona, Madrid and in European capitals such as London or Paris. When he was only fifteen, he decided to go to meet Sorolla - when he was painting "The Smugglers" in the vicinity of his family mansion - to find out what opinion he deserved on the first portrait he had made of his mother. A few years later, and undoubtedly encouraged by the praiseworthy response received, he was already successfully overcoming the successive sieves of artistic criticism, until he stood out with the “subtle and aristocratic” style that characterized him, in such relevant competitions as the National Exhibition de Bellas Artes or at the Paris Salon. Delving into his biography it is possible to recognize the main factors that would converge in this rapid and justified progression: the very cultural and artistic environment that surrounded him since his birth. The specific preparation with which his refined mother channeled his innate qualities and marked sensitivity. As well as, and above all, his own need to create beauty. Despite a brilliant degree in Law, he attended the Sant Jordi Academy of Fine Arts in Barcelona, complementing his training in Rome, Florence and Paris. At the early date of 1925, the local press was pleased to transcribe the reviews of his exhibition in the Galerías Layetanas of Barcelona, and in which the acquisition of one of his works "Frivolities" for the Museum of Art took place. Modern of Palermo (Sicily). After participating in 1926 in the Autumn Salon of Palma de Mallorca, together with Narcís Puget Viñas, and in 1929 in the Permanent Exhibition of Levante Art, one of his emblematic satisfactions would arrive: the praises that King Alfonso XIII himself dedicated to the stop before his painting Céfora, a painting in which his sister Guadalupe Tur de Montis was the model, during the National Exhibition of Fine Arts, held in Madrid. Oil that also deserved attention in the prestigious magazine La Esfera, which dedicated the cover of its number 20 of July 5, 1930, or the French magazine La Revue Moderne. In the magazine Arte y Hogar- in its number 56, the Marqués de Lozoya Director General of Fine Arts wrote a nice eulogy of the painter and his work in the photographic report dedicated to the beautiful and elegant Casa de los Tur de Ibiza. It was precisely in 1930, when Tur de Montis began to interact amicably and professionally, with a select group of painters, both Spanish (Pla, Rigoberto Soler, Amadeo Roca and Laureano Barrau...

Figurative work, depicting a torso from the back in slightly 3/4 view and cut off at the knees, defined with painterly brush strokes in an earthy palette of browns, greens, and oranges. Luis Frangella (1944-1990) was a figurative, postmodern painter and sculptor. He earned a masters in architecture at the University of Buenos Aires in 1972 and then attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1973. In 1976, he moved to New York City where he painted huge “street” murals on construction site wall, abandoned Hudson River piers and in the nightclubs of the East Village and Tribeca. Situated in these nontraditional spaces, he began working with subversive artists like Wojnarowicz. Luis was a sort of father figure to many younger artists, becoming an influential member of the East Village art scene. Known as a good cook, he fostered a sense of community and caring, often serving impromptu meals in his loft after the late-night club scene...

"Untitled Abstract" Oil on Board, Abstract Expressionist, Signed by the Artist
Located in Detroit, MI
SALE ONE WEEK ONLY The energy and gusto of the applied paint in "Untitled Abstract" appears close to violent except for the calming influence of the circle in the middle. The red circle tempers the movement a little and brings all the strokes and wild directions into a harmony that is bursting with life. This is an extraordinarily expressive painting by Simpson. Simpson became the first African American to receive a prestigious five-year fellowship from the Charleston Scientific and Cultural Education fund and left South Carolina in 1949 for New York City after he finished high school. He attended New York University and Cooper Union while working in the frame shop of Herbert Benevy. Many well-known artists came to the frame shop and in time critiqued Simpson's work and developed a relationship with him. At NYU Simpson became acquainted with Hale Woodruff...
