Pierre Andre Obando creates process oriented abstract paintings. He was born in Belize City, Belize and grew up in the Caribbean, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Miami, Fl and Jackson, MS. Pierre Obando completed his MFA at Hunter College and completed his undergraduate studies at New World School of the Arts, Miami, Fl. His work was featured in the Queens International Biennial in 2004, and 2006 at the Queens Museum of Art. His work has been in group exhibitions at Angela Hanley Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Rockland Center for the Arts, West Nyack, NY; Rush Arts Gallery, New York, NY; MACO Mexico Art Fair in Mexico City; Nina Freudenheim Gallery, Buffalo, NY; Royale Projects, Indian Wells, CA; The Painting Center, New York, NY; and Dean Project, New York, NY. In 2008, he had a solo exhibition at Heskin Contemporary, New York, NY and in 2009, at project space show at Rush Arts Gallery, New York, NY. He has participated in the Atlantic Center for the Arts Artists-in-Residence Program. In the fall of 2012, he participated in the group show Caribe Now, at the Nathan Cumming Foundation, which was organized by El Museo del Barrio, New York, NY. Contemporary Pattern and Decoration piece, The original movement was championed by the gallery owner Holly Solomon. The P&D movement wanted to revive an interest in minor forms such as patterning which at that point was equated with triviality. The prevailing negative view of decoration was one not generally shared by non-Western cultures, The Pattern and Decoration movement was influenced by sources outside of what was considered to be fine art. Blurring the line between art and design, many P&D works mimic patterns like those on wallpapers, printed fabrics, and quilts. There is a close connection between the Pattern and Decoration movement and the Feminist art movement. The P&D movement arose in opposition to the Minimalist and Conceptualist movements. Mary Grigoriadis, Valerie Jaudon, Joyce Kozloff, Miriam Schapiro, Robert Zakanitch were early proponents of this style. The artist lives and works in New York City. Ray Kass is an internationally recognized artist whose work is represented by Garvey/Simon: ART ACCESS in NYC and the Reynolds Gallery in Richmond, Virginia. His paintings have been widely exhibited and have been represented in solo exhibitions in New York City by the Allan Stone Gallery, A.V.C. Contemporary Arts Gallery, ZONE: Chelsea Center for the Arts, Baumgartner Gallery, and ir77 Contemporary Art. He has received numerous grants and awards, including individual artists grants from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. His paintings reside in many public and private collections. Ray Kass is Professor Emeritus of Art at Virginia Tech, and founder and director of The Mountain Lake Workshop; an ongoing series of collaborative and inter-related workshops centered in the environmental, cultural, and community resources of the Appalachian region of southwestern Virginia. The workshops have resulted in many unique, collaborative works of art that have been widely exhibited. His father was a Jew from Gomel. His mother descended from the prominent family of Samoiloff Actors. This family was well-known all over Russia for a long time. Since 1820 names of the actors from the Samoiloffs' Dynasty never left the theatre posters. It was the largest family tree in the history of Russian scenic art. The central figure in the dynasty was V.V. Samoiloff (1834 - 1877) lived at the same time with Feodor Dostoevsky, Karl Brullov and Leo Tolstoy. V.V. Samoiloff, P.V. Samoiloff and V.A. Michurina-Samoilova were buried at the Alexander Nevsky Monastery in St. Petersburg at the place where the greatest people of Russian Culture lay. Yuri started painting in his early childhood. In 1962 - 1968 he studied at the Art School for gifted children at the Repin's Academy of Fine Art. In 1970 he became a student of Mukhina's (now, again, - Shtiglits) Academy of Decorative and Apply Art, specializing in monumental art. In 1975 he graduated from the Academy. Yuri Brusovany had not been granted with official recognition until Perestroika. He was refused the membership in the Artists Union (altogether with the professional rights and privileges). In 1976 he joined the informal society of free artists in Leningrad (TEII). He chose the path of the decedents. Being a fierce antagonist to social realism, which was an official art theme in Soviet Union, he was pursued by the authorities, officially condemned and experienced a pressure from KGB's internal affairs...
