This painting is after Surrealist master Rene Magritte. It depicts men with bowler hats Carlos Kis, 1932-2010 a well known Brazilian artist. Kis was born in Uruguay to a Romanian Jewish family and moved to Brazil where he was well known for his painting and sculpture. His formica paintings were an extremely laborious process and the media has not been used by other artists other than that of his daughter Anita, under Kis's supervision. Known as a painter, watercolorist and graphic artist Carlos Kis artworks show the surreal, modern and expressionist aspects of his inexhaustible talent and imagination. Inspired by Surrealism he developed Sinapsism. Kis studied at the Faculty of Architecture of the Universidad de la República (UdelaR) and at the Instituto de Profesores Artigas. For three years he ran the art gallery Opus in Brasília , then was director of a fashion magazine, worked as an interior designer and in the design department of an automotive company. Initially painting on canvas, he refrained from doing this during a five-year stay in New York in the 1970s and increasingly turned to works of art made from the artificial material Formica than baked into an enamel at high temperature. The Cyanamid company provided him with the necessary materials. In 1995, the Art of Living magazine devoted an extensive story to his works in Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Punta del Este, New York, Guarujá, Porto Alegre, Joinville, São Paulo and Mexico City among others. In 1960, he came to Brazil and lived in São Paulo for ten years. In this city, he released several albums of his own: Razão & Coração e Galos e Galos, 1966; IV Screenprints, 1968; and Woodcuts by Carlos Kis, 1969. After spending four years in New York (United States), he settled permanently in the city of Santos SP, in 1975. He is the creator of paintinlay, a technique of painting on pressed formica and submitted to high temperatures. Jonah Kinigstein (b. 1923) is an American Postwar & Contemporary painter. He works in a figurative expressionist style. His works are featured in the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the National Academy of Design, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He lives in New York City. Jonah Kinigstein was trained at Cooper Union Art School, The Grande Chaumiere in Paris; and Belle Arte in Rome. He has been a Fulbright Fellow. He has holdings at MOMA, the Ain Herod Museum in Tel Aviv; Smithsonian; the Albright-Knox Gallery and the Nelson Gallery of Art. He lived and worked in Brooklyn New York. He has taught at the Brooklyn Museum and National Academy of Design School of Fine Arts. Born in 1923 in Coney Island, Jonah’s early influences were discovered during visits to the Metropolitan Museum- “When I really saw the old masters, it blew my mind, of course.” He attended Cooper Union for a year before he was drafted into the Army, serving from 1942 – 1945. Soon after, Jonah moved to Paris where he spent time at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, conversing with other aspiring artists, exchanging ideas, exhibiting his work, seeing established artists, and generally soaking up a fertile creative environment. He exhibited in several shows including the Salon D’Automne, Salon de Mai, and the Salon des Moins de Trente Ans, and had one-man shows in the Galerie Breteau and Les Impressions D’Art. After Paris, Jonah moved to Rome on a Fulbright Scholarship and studied at the La Schola Di Belles Artes. After a year, he returned to the U.S. and exhibited his paintings at the Downtown Gallery in Manhattan. A classically trained painter whose ambitions were frustrated by the New York art world’s obsession with Abstract Expressionism and the lucrative industry that grew up around it. Like so many painters, he was unable to make a living solely from painting, so he worked in the commercial art world and did freelance illustration and design. Throughout this time, Jonah’s commitment to his own art never wavered, and he continued to paint and occasionally exhibit. Ron Gorchov Historic Self Portrait, 1955-1959 Oil painting on board Hand signed in paint on the upper recto and dated 1955-9 Frame included: held in original vintage artist's frame This work was exhibited at the Sager Reeves Gallery in Columbia, Missouri in their Masters Exhibit in December, 2022, and is reproduced as a full page in their exhibition catalogue. A copy of this catalogue accompanies the artwork. In 2019, the year before Ron Gorchov passed away, Stephen Truax, director of Cheim & Read, his then gallery, passed along details of this extraordinary painting to Gorchov's studio to be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonne. When shown the work, Gorchov remembered it well, but was amazed that the painting was still in existence after so many years. This historic early self-portrait, done over a period of four years, from 1955-1959, starting when he was only 25 years old reveals Gorchov's distinctive and sophisticated sense of color and form. This is one of the artist's earliest works, and very few works by Gorchov from this era ever appear on the market or are known to remain in existence. Framed 26 x 13 image 20 x 6.5 inches. YITSKHOK LIKHTENSHTEYN (ISAAC LICHTENSTEIN) (1888-1981) (Icchok, Izrael) was born in Lodz, Poland. Initially he was studying at Yehuda Pen school in Witebsk. In the same school where young Marc Chagall started to paint his shtetl Jews, Jewish neighbourhoods and personages. As many young Jewish children who decided painting to be their passion Isaac moved to Paris where he was one of the co-founders of Machmadim - a group of Jewish artists (mostly émigré from Eastern Europe) who dedicated their art to traditional Jewish themes. Later Isaac Lichtenstein studied with Boris Schatz and painted at Bezalel, Jerusalem. Until age seven he was raised in Warsaw; later, when his father received a position with Poznański, he lived with his parents in Lodz. There he studied in a state public school. He demonstrated talent for painting while still quite young, and in 1906 he began to attend the Cracow art academy, before going on to study painting in Rome, Florence, and Munich. In 1908 he entered the Bezalel Art School in Jerusalem. In 1910 he returned to Cracow, lived for a short time in Munich, 1911 in Paris, 1912-1913 again in the land of Israel, and in 1914 he returned to Paris, that very year setting off for the United States. He lived in New York during WWI, where he became part of Jewish literary and artistic circles, and contributed as a graphic artist to a variety of Jewish publications, among them: M. Basin’s Antologye (Anthology), the collection Velt ayn, velt oys (World in, world out), and designed frontispieces, little vignettes, and letters for Yiddish-language books. In 1916 he also began to write and published articles on the plastic arts in: Tsukunft (Future) in New York; the collection Shriften (Writings), vol. 6; Onheyb (Beginning), edited by Z. Vaynper; Morgn-zhurnal (Morning journal); Der amerikaner (The American); Forverts (Forward); and Di tsayt (The times). He did journalistic work also for M. F. Seidman’s correspondence bureau in New York. In 1918 he departed with the Jewish Legion for Israel. In 1920 he came to London, was demobilized there, and was a contributor to the journal Renesans (Renaissance), edited by Leo Kenig, and to the daily newspaper Di tsayt, edited by Morris Meyer. In 1924 he returned to Poland, exhibited his drawings in Warsaw, Lodz, Vilna, and other cities, gave speeches on art (general and Jewish), and published work in: Haynt (Today), Moment (Moment), Folkstsaytung (People’s newspaper), and Literarishe bleter (Literary leaves)—in Warsaw; Unzer lebn (Our life) in Grodno; Voliner lebn (Volhynia life); Nayer folksblat (New people’s newspaper) in Lodz; and elsewhere. He also published impressions from his travels and memoirs of the Jewish Legion in Haynt. His vision hovers just around the unraveling edge of things, where what is solid and clear becomes ambiguous. He is fascinated, often delighted, by the falling apart. This unexpected, fresh perspective results in oddly affecting pictures of a now long-gone New York. Born Moishe in a town called Dvinsk, Russia (what is now Daugavpils, Latvia), Kish came with his family to New York when he was in his teens. The family settled in Brownsville, and for the rest of Kish’s life Brooklyn remained his home, though he moved from one neighborhood to another. "The Potter" is an interior portrait of a young man working on a vase at his potter's wheel by Philadelphia born Expressionist painter Bernard Harmon. The 24.25" x 14" oil on cardboard painting is signed "Harmon" in the lower left and it is framed in a new black wood frame. Figurative expressionism in the style of Alice Neel. Bernard Harmon was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1935. Harmon was primarily a portrait painter and a well loved teacher in the Philadelphia area. A graduate of the Philadelphia Museum School and Temples Tyler School of Art, Harmon traveled extensively in Europe and South America. Beloved by many, Harmon taught in the Philadelphia School District for 32 of his 54 years of life. Beginning his career as an art teacher at West Philadelphia High School, in the early 1960s he became one of the district's artists in residence, traveling from school to school to demonstrate for students how an artist works. Returning to the classroom, Harmon joined the art department at Central High School where he taught for 14 years and became an innovator in art curriculum, developing a program offering advanced placement art classes to gifted students. In his final years Harmon became a supervisor, mentoring teachers and overseeing programs in the Philadelphia school systems District #1. Dimensions Without Frame: H 20 in. x W 15 in. Artist Biography: Charles Campbell has been hailed as one of the more distinctive and imaginative contemporary American Painters of our time. In a highly individual style he combined rich vibrant colors with elaborate textures and composition. His paintings, described as modern by conservatives, and considered conservative by Avant-Garde groups, have their own unique balance of design. Charles was a quiet man who tended to make strong social statements in his paintings, some subtle, some obviously satirical, others full of fantasy and humor. A perfectionist, (he has destroyed over two-thirds of his work during his career), he painted every day until his eyes gave out and then often did some sculpting. His aim, he said, was to "Express my vision of the world in the purest possible terms." As a young man he drew inspiration from Daumier, particularly his outstanding draftsmanship. He also learned a great deal from Renoir in his handling of paint and tonal variations. El Greco's contribution is seen in the intensity and luminosity of many of Campbell's paintings, just as Picasso's line and description of the human form can be seen in others. Charles Campbell was born in Dayton, Ohio, but spent most of his boyhood in Springfield, Ohio. At 17 his family moved to Cleveland where he enrolled in the Cleveland School of Art (now the Cleveland Institute of Art), and spent five years there, receiving a B.A. degree in 1928. He taught one year at this school, but decided against the profession because he felt he had no calling for it. He was caught up in the 1930s Depression like thousands of his fellow artists and worked in WPA producing several murals. Following that he got a stake together and bummed about the country in a jalopy for a year, looking at the land and the people in the land during those very rough years in our history. He spent six months in an ancient house in Texas, painting, writing, doing a great deal of reading and thinking about what was going on, both in his own head and in the world. He returned to Cleveland and was taken on by the Treasury Art Project, producing easel paintings until 1942. At that time Campbell married and left for Los Angeles. Up until his departure from Cleveland, Campbell had established himself locally as an outstanding young painter, winning many prizes and awards. His early work was exhibited in the traveling shows in most of the major museums of the country. The Cleveland Museum and Whitney Museum own examples of his work of that period. After his move to Los Angeles, Campbell dropped out of the museum circuit and thereafter exhibited only in private galleries surviving wholly on the sale of his work.
