Portrait of Lady - Oil on Canvas by Carlo Socrate - 1930
By Carlo Socrate
Located in Roma, IT
Portrait of Lady is an original oil on canvas artwork realized by Carlo Socrate (1889-1967) in 1930. A beautiful portrait of a woman by one of the major exponents of the association of painters that came to be known as Scuola Romana (Roman School). Very good conditions. Collect a masterpiece of the XX century. Carlo Socrate (Mezzana Bigli -Pavia 1889 – Rome 1967) He is the son of actors and lives in Argentina until the age of nine years. Once returned to Italy, he begins attending the Free School of the Nude and in 1914, he goes to Rome, where a year later he would study at Villa Strohl-Fern. In 1917, he worked for the company, Ballets Russes by Diaghilev; he also collaborated with the scenography for Las Meninas and prepared the scenes for Les femmes de bonne humeur (The Good Humored Ladies) by Léon Bakst. During this period, he meets Picasso, whom he follows to Paris, collaborating with him on scenes from Parade. During his stay in Paris, he meets Derain and other exponents of the cultural environment. With Picasso, he visited Barcelona and then Madrid where, together, they visited The Prado Museum. In 1918, at the Casina Valadier on the Pincian Hill (Rome), he exhibits his Still Life with a Dish of Apples and Onions, which arouses perplexity in the Roman environment for his personal rare “neoclassicism” but at the same time, attentive to European situation in those years. After Portatrice di Frutta (Fruit Carrier) (1924), which is one of his masterpieces, he exhibits i Cacciatori (The Hunters), a very challenging painting, at the “Novecento Italiano...

Antique English Realist Genre Scene Framed High Society Portrait Oil Painting
Located in Buffalo, NY
George Dunlop Leslie (1835 - 1921) Antique English realist oil painting. Oil on canvas. Signed. Framed. Measuring 17 by 20 overall and 12 by 15 paining alone. Artist Bio: George Dunlop Leslie RA (London 2 July 1835 – 21 February 1921 Lindfield, Sussex) was a British genre painter, author and illustrator. He was born into an artistic family; his father was the notable genre painter Charles Robert Leslie RA, and his uncle Robert Leslie was a marine artist. He studied art first at Cary's Art Academy, then from 1854 at the Royal Academy. His first exhibition at the Academy was in 1859, and he showed his work every year thereafter. He became an Associate (ARA) in 1868 and a full Royal Academician (RA) in 1876.George Dunlop Leslie lived early on in St John's Wood (London), and was part of the St John's Wood Clique, a group of artists who favoured light-hearted genre subjects. From 1884–1901 he was resident at "Riverside", St. Leonard's Lane, Wallingford, Oxfordshire. His sister Mary Leslie (1833–1907), also an artist, lived at "Cromwell Lodge" next door. Fellow artist, James Hayllar, was also a resident of the village and they painted a portrait of Queen Victoria together for her Golden Jubilee in 1887. From 1906 he lived at "Compton House" in Lindfield, SussexHis early works, such as Matilda (1860) showed the strong influence of the Pre-Raphaelites, but he settled into a more academic, aesthetic, style of painting with the aim of showing "pictures from the sunny side of English domestic life". He often used children as subjects and his work was praised by John Ruskin for its portrayal of the "sweet quality of English girlhood". One of his pictures, This is the Way we Wash our Clothes, was used as a poster in an advertising campaign for soap. Despite its apparently trivial subject matter, however, Leslie's work was highly regarded by critics of the time.In 1889 during his time at Riverside house in Wallingford Leslie is credited with painting four angel murals in St Leonards Church.Leslie was also an author and had several books published. Our river (1888), Letters to Marco (1893) and Riverside letters (1896) were all illustrated by him in black and white, and based on personal observations of life and nature in his local area. He also wrote a history of the early years of the Royal Academy - The inner life of the Royal Academy.Leslie was married to Lydia. They had a daughter Alice (depicted in his painting Alice in Wonderland) and a son Peter Leslie...

Esosa
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
Esosa, which means "gift of God," is not only a name but a powerful reminder of the potential within every girl. As she lays down with a book she epitomizes the essence of her name - a vessel of knowledge, waiting to be filled with wisdom and understanding. This simple yet profound act symbolizes her commitment to continuous learning and her unwavering belief in the power of education. In many parts of the world, girls have historically been denied access to education, limiting their opportunities and potential. But Esosa's unwavering dedication is changing that narrative, one page at a time. She firmly believes that empowering girls through education not only benefits them but also enriches their families, communities, and societies at large. Esosa's journey towards championing girl child education began with her own experiences and challenges. Growing up in a society where traditional gender roles often hindered girls' access to education, she encountered numerous obstacles. However, with the support of her family, particularly her parents, who recognized the importance of education for all, Esosa pursued her dreams relentlessly. Through her educational journey, Esosa witnessed the transformative power of knowledge. Education broadened her perspective, nurtured critical thinking, and instilled in her a sense of purpose. She became acutely aware of the vast potential locked within every girl and the boundless possibilities that education can unlock. With an unyielding determination, Esosa embarked on a mission to inspire and empower girls around her. She started organizing educational workshops and mentorship programs, encouraging girls to pursue their dreams fearlessly. Through her efforts, she advocated for equal educational opportunities, fighting against the prevailing gender biases and societal norms. Esosa's impact extended beyond her immediate surroundings. She utilized technology and social media to reach out to a broader audience, spreading her message of girl child education far and wide. Her story, her beliefs, and her passion resonated with many, attracting like-minded individuals and organizations that joined hands to support her cause. As she continues to lay down with her book, Esosa sets an example for girls everywhere - an example of resilience, empowerment, and the courage to defy limitations. She emphasizes that knowledge is not a privilege but a right that should be accessible to all, irrespective of gender or social background. In her vision for a better world, every girl receives quality education, unlocking their potential to become change-makers, leaders, and contributors to society. Esosa envisions a world where girls are empowered to break barriers, shatter glass ceilings, and rewrite the narrative for future generations. To all those who come across her story, Esosa's message is clear: investing in girl child education is an investment in a brighter and more equitable future. It is a journey that transforms lives, breaks cycles of poverty, and builds thriving communities. So, let us all join hands with Esosa and countless other advocates for girl child education. Together, we can create a world where every girl receives the gift of education, embraces her potential, and fulfills her dreams. Let us believe wholeheartedly in the power of education and seek knowledge to shape a better tomorrow - a tomorrow where every girl is an Esosa, a true gift of God. A portrait of a lady and her daughter with an exotic bird
Located in Bath, Somerset
A portrait of a lady three-quarter length, seated in an interior, wearing a red silk gown draped in a pink silk sash with an exotic bird perched on her hand and one arm resting on a stone plinth, her young daughter wearing a green silk gown standing at her side. Oil on canvas, housed in a period 'Lely' giltwood frame. This double portrait was painted at the height of Dahl's career in circa 1715 when Dahl had become firmly established as one of the leading portrait painters in Britain. Although the identities of the sitters are currently unknown, it is a sensitive depiction of a close and affectionate bond between a mother and daughter, with the young girl's hand resting affectionately on her mothers lap. The tamed exotic bird adds a charming decorative element which also serves to convey the high social status of the lady, given only the very wealthy would be able to own such a rare and expensive pet and the lively colouring of the bird's feathers is reflected in the colours of the sitters' silk gowns. Provenance: Private collection, London Michael Dahl (Stockholm 1659-1743 London) was born in Stockholm in Sweden and studied under Martin Hannibal (d 1741) and later with David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl. In 1682 he travelled to London, where he became acquainted with Godfrey Kneller and Henry Tilson, and in 1685 he left for Europe with Tilson, working briefly in Paris before continuing to Venice and Rome, where they stayed for about two years. In Rome Dahl converted to Roman Catholicism and gravitated towards the circle of Christina, former Queen of Sweden, who sat for him (Grimsthorpe Castle, Lincs). He returned to England with Tilson via Frankfurt and arrived in London in 1689, staying in England for the remainder of his career. During Dahl's absence, Kneller had consolidated his supremacy in London as the most fashionable portrait painter, but Dahl rapidly became Kneller’s closest competitor. His patrons probably had roots in the Swedish diplomatic circles, but it expanded as a result of his ability and his agreeable personality. His prices were lower than those of Kneller and he favoured softer, more diffused, colour tones and could respond to his sitters with sincerity and humanity. Politically, Kneller supported the ascendant Whigs while Dahl was a Tory, but they frequently painted the same sitters from both parties, and in spite of fundamental differences in technique and temperament, their work was sometimes similar in appearance. Dahl was prolific but rarely signed his work, and comparatively few of his portraits were engraved in mezzotint, the method used by Kneller to widen his reputation. By 1690 he had painted the aged Duke of Schomberg (engraved by William Faithorne) and Prince George of Denmark (London, Kensington Palace). He was ignored by William III but received commissions from Princess Anne, including one for a portrait of herself (Oakly Park, Ludlow, Salop). He also painted the future Duke and Duchess of Marlborough, and his informal portrait of the Duchess (Althorp House, Northants), formerly attributed to Kneller, is perhaps the most intimate of all images of her. During the 1690s he secured the patronage of Charles Seymour, the ‘Proud’ 6th Duke of Somerset, who ordered a series of seven full-length portraits of notable contemporary beauties from Dahl (1690s; Petworth House, W. Sussex, NT). This was originally a scheme similar to Kneller’s more famous ‘Hampton Court Beauties’, but the portraits were subsequently reduced to three-quarter-length formats. The features of the sitters are not individualized, but they possess a decorative, languorous glamour that recalls Lely rather than Kneller. Somerset gave Dahl further employment over the next 25 years. In 1698, following the death of Klöcker Ehrenstrahl, Dahl was offered the post of court painter at Stockholm, which he apparently refused, preferring to remain in London at his studio in Leicester Fields, near the Swedish legation. In about 1700 he was joined by a young compatriot, Hans Hysing, who worked with him for many years. Dahl seems not to have married until after 1708, He had a son Michael (d. 1741), also a painter, of whose work nothing is known, and two daughters. After the accession of Queen Anne in 1701, she and Prince George sat for a number of official portraits. His royal patronage ceased with Queen Anne’s death, and when Dahl refused to paint the infant Duke of Cumberland in 1722. He was suspected of Jacobite sympathies, and relations had cooled between him and the Swedish legation. However, his practice continued to prosper, and he acquired another important patron in Edward Harley, 2nd Earl of Oxford, who shared his political views and whose circle included the architect James Gibbs and the poets Matthew Prior and Alexander Pope, all of whom Dahl painted. Oxford commissioned several portraits of himself. In the earliest (1719; Welbeck Abbey...

Bored
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
The artwork "Bored" is a stunning creation that weaves a delicate tapestry of dreams and reality. The artist has skillfully captured the essence of a young girl's imagination, allowing the viewer to peer into the depths of her thoughts and aspirations. The lady's posture exudes an air of calm contemplation, but her eyes tell a different story. They glimmer with a hint of mischief and wonder, hinting at the magical world she has conjured up in her mind. In the background of the painting, the artist has masterfully depicted a vision of northern horsemen, galloping majestically across vast, snow-covered plains. These horsemen, clad in traditional attire, symbolize strength, courage, and freedom - qualities that the young girl may yearn for or admire. The contrast between the girl's stillness and the dynamic scene she envisions creates a captivating juxtaposition, emphasizing the power of imagination and the allure of the unknown. As the viewer gazes at the artwork, they are drawn into a narrative of the young girl's daydream. Perhaps she is longing for adventure, yearning to explore the far-off lands of the North, or maybe she seeks to break free from the mundane routine of everyday life. The painting stirs the imagination, leaving room for personal interpretations and connections. The title "Bored" takes on a deeper meaning in light of the young girl's reverie. It hints at the idea that boredom can be a catalyst for creativity and imagination. In moments of monotony, the mind often seeks escape, finding solace in the realm of daydreams and fantasies. This painting serves as a reminder that boredom is not necessarily a negative emotion, but a gateway to exploration and self-discovery. The artist's technique in "Bored" is nothing short of mesmerizing. The use of vibrant colors and soft brushstrokes adds a touch of surrealism, enhancing the dreamlike quality of the artwork. The girl's expression is a masterpiece in itself, evoking empathy and inviting the viewer to empathize with her world of dreams. In a world where we are constantly surrounded by distractions and technology, "Bored" reminds us of the power of introspection and the beauty of allowing our minds to wander freely. It encourages us to embrace moments of stillness and delve into the depths of our imagination, just like the young girl in the painting. Art has the incredible ability to transport us to different realities, and "Bored" achieves just that. It invites us to envision our own northern horsemen or any other fantastic tales that lie within our hearts. It celebrates the essence of childhood wonder, where even the simplest of moments can become the foundation for extraordinary journeys. In conclusion, "Bored" is an exquisite artwork that captures the essence of a young girl's daydream about northern horsemen. It stands as a testament to the power of imagination and the art of storytelling through visual means. As we gaze upon this masterpiece, let us also be reminded of the beauty of introspection, the allure of dreams, and the magic that lies within every one of us. The town was located in a narrow canyon on the eastern face of the Oquirrh Mountains. In 1938, when Max was 13, his family moved to Midvale, Utah. After completing high school, Max went to work laying rail until he was inducted into the U.S. Navy to serve during W.W. II. There he took an aptitude test and was initially assigned to the medical corp., later transferring to the dental unit. Max was stationed at Port Hueneme, Ventura County, California through the end of the war. When he was discharged in 1946, he remained in Southern California, living in the Los Angeles area. He met a man named Larry Torres and they formed a partnership to do silk screen work primarily for the Colby Poster Printing Company. This lasted about 10 years until the Colby building caught fire and burned down. In 1958, Max began working for Slade Novelty company that made doll parts using a product called plastisol. A year later, Max began producing plastic parts through his own business. One day, a couple of kids brought in a shrunken skull they had made and asked Max if he could reproduce it. Max said he could and he looked around for a business to work with for this task. He ultimately decided he could create his own machine shop to make molds. As a result, Max purchased a lathe, drill press, grinder and other tools to create his own machine shop and went into business making molds. He built a clientele and in 1973, he moved his machine shop to Glendale, California. Painter, Sculptor, Teacher and Author: Max recalls the day when his interest in art took a new direction. He happened to be in a paint store to purchase some supplies when he saw a card posted on a wall that read, "Come paint with Connie Marlo". Max had been interested in art since his youth and he was frequently impressed with paintings displayed by local artists at various community events. Consequently, he decided to go to Connie's Saturday morning art class at a studio on North La Brea Avenue (between Sunset and Hollywood) in Los Angeles. But, as fate would have it, he immediately took a detour from this class when he found a piece of paper on the floor of the studio referencing another art class dealing with compositions, patterns, rhythms and color harmony. The instructor's name was Hal Reed, a former art student of the Russian/American Master, Nicolai Fechin. Hal owned the building (previously the Will Foster Studio) and had founded the Art League of Los Angeles. When Max found Hal, he asked Hal if he could join his class. Hal said "No, the class was full" but he said Max could monitor the class in the back of the classroom. Max took him up on the offer and began observing the weekly class. During the class, Hal told his students that they should practice what they were learning by going to "live model" classes. Max began attending these classes where he learned how to draw figures. After a few months, Hal and Max became good friends. Hal was so impressed with Max's work that he offered Max the opportunity to teach at another location that Hal was opening in the San Fernando Valley. Max accepted the offer and began teaching his own art class. For Max, it was a quick jump from learning to teaching. Max then found that several of his students had to commute to his art class from the west end of the "Valley". To better serve this group of students, Max decided to relocate to another studio in Calabasas. Max continued teaching, and at this time he was producing very impressive portraits, both oil paintings and charcoal drawings from live models (Max never worked from photos). Max demonstrated real talent, and the style of his drawings and paintings were being compared to those of Nicolai Fechin. And, like Fechin, Max also had an interest in sculpting. One day, Max decided to design and cast a bronze owl sculpture to put in his Calabasas Fine Art Gallery. Later, someone approached Max when he was at the foundry and asked him about his success selling the owl sculpture. The individual who asked this question was convinced that there was a broader market for these sculptures and he ordered a dozen of the owl sculptures from Max. This encouraged Max to do more castings. Some of the new castings were antique sculptures he found and reproduced. As this new business grew, he decided to establish his own foundry, employing up to 15 workers. The business continued for many years, up until the late 1990's when Max got tired of the foundry business and sold it. Max, who was now in his 70's, decided to move on to his next venture as an artist, dedicating himself to doing the actual sculpting of original art. He loved the creativity of sculpting and he had his sculptures cast at local foundries, ironically the same ones that used to be his competition. Max was now fully engaged in his new artistic direction and, over time, he produced a large body of work. He created very impressive sculptures, including about 100 full-size sculptures. He sold some of these to high-end clientele, the Foundry at SLS Las Vegas, and to Hollywood studios. Even though Max now seemed to be totally in his element, he somehow also found time to continue to teach painting classes at the California Art Institute in Westlake Village in Los Angeles. At the institute, he specialized in figure work. Max continued to draw, paint and teach, but he says he stopped sculpting when he turned 90. Max produced four books showcasing his drawings and paintings. The first is "Faces, The Drawings of Max Turner", copyright 2000, that showcases nearly 100 of his portrait drawings. Within the "Acknowledgements" section, he lists Hal Reed and Joseph Nordmann, two former students of Nicolai Fechin. In 2006, Max produced his second book titled "Figures and Faces", reflecting not only portraits but also figure drawings and paintings. It is a wonderful book of Max's work, but it is currently difficult to find. The third book is titled "Faces 2, The Paintings and Drawings of Max Turner", copyright 2009, which includes 75 portrait paintings and drawings. In the "Preface" of this book, Max describes growing up in a small and isolated mining town during the Great Depression. He states that as a kid, he had little exposure of any culture or view of what the rest of the world was like. His neighbor was the trash collector and Max would sometimes go through his truck looking for anything of value. Among other things, he found magazines like Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping and Red Book, with covers that frequently showed drawings or paintings of faces. Max states that these images were the very first source of inspiration for him. He says that he began looking more carefully at people's faces and if they had character, he would draw them. By drawing them, Max says that he was making them part of his world, his world of "Faces". In 2018, Max published his newest book showcasing his drawings and paintings. It is titled "Max Turner's Figure Sketches". This softbound book includes 76 pages and over 120 drawings and paintings. In the Introduction, Max explains "I have found that when approaching the figure, one should begin with the gesture. After having captured the essence or feeling of the pose, one can then proceed to build on it." The figure sketches in this wonderful book reflect a Master's work that consistently captures the "gesture"-showing the emotion, movement and expression. Two more books are on the horizon for Max, both dealing with his passion for sculpting. His first, "The Sculpture of Max Turner" is a compilation of his commercial and noncommercial pieces throughout his career. The second, "Terra Cotta Sculpture by Max Turner" is a complete collection of figures done at the California Art Institute. These much anticipated books should be out later in 2018. Max now considers himself primarily a sculptor. But others in the art world are more than impressed with his drawings and paintings as well. His portraits are often described as having a Fechin-esque appearance, referring to the style of Nicolai Fechin. When Max observed those first art classes given by Hal Reed, it should be noted that Hal had previously been a student of the Russian/American Master Nicolai Fechin in the early to mid-1950's. In fact, Hal was a student in the last art class that Fechin taught before he unexpectedly died in 1955. Hal was so strongly influenced by Fechin that he later produced two 30-minute art instruction videos as part his Art Video Productions wherein he specifically described Fechin techniques that he learned in Fechin's class. The Fechin style and techniques were in play when Max later met Hal. Over the years, many of Max's art students, art collectors, gallery owners, as well as the Director of the Monterey Museum of Art have commented on the Fechin-esque qualities of Max's wonderful charcoal drawings and paintings. So, while Max may consider himself primarily a sculptor, his drawings and paintings are also impressive and very much sought after. When Nicolai Fechin died in 1955, three of the nine students in his last art class became life-long friends. Max subsequently became friends with not only Hal Reed, but also with prior Fechin students Joseph Nordmann and Albert Londraville...
