Attributed by Nikolay Alekseyevich Kasatkin (1859 - 1930). In this touching artwork, the artist perfectly conveyed the character of the old woman, who has seen a lot in her life. The hands, tired out and riddled with veins, lie helplessly on the knees. Her slouched body tells us about the load of years lived. The painter skillfully conveys a sense of wisdom, kindness, and humility through her wrinkled face and detached gaze. The painting exudes warmth with a subtle touch of sadness and reflection on a life lived. Thanks to moderately contrasting colors, the portrait comes to life and shows us the depth of the artist's intention. Kasatkin not only continued the traditions of the best masters of portraiture in Russia in the 19th century, but also introduced new principles into it. He sought to display on canvas not only the external features of a person, but also to demonstrate his spiritual world. Antique oil painting on canvas, signed bottom left, framed.
Size app.: 68.5 x 52.3 cm (roughly 27 x 20.6 in), frame is 80.5 x 63.5 cm (roughly 31.7 x 25 in). Very good condition, very well preserved recently conserved condition with minimal wear (notice few micro losses here and there). Please study good resolution images for cosmetic condition. In person actual painting may appear darker or brighter than in our pictures, strictly depending on sufficient light in your environment. Nikolay Alekseyevich Kasatkin (1859 - 1930) was a Russian painter, considered to be one of the founders of Social Realism in Russia. From 1873 to 1883 he studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture with Vasily Perov and Illarion Pryanishnikov. Upon graduating, he received a medal for his painting "Beggars at the Church Door". In 1891, he began exhibiting with the Peredvizhniki and, from 1894 to 1917, was a teacher at his alma mater. For thirty years, beginning in 1883, he worked with Ivan Sytin, providing illustrations for his popular almanac/calendars and teaching lithography. He also contributed The Great Reform, an encyclopedia that celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the Emancipation (1861), and a collection called "Russian History in Pictures". In 1903, he became a member of the Imperial Academy of Arts. He participated in the Exposition Universelle (1900), where he won a silver medal, and the Louisiana Purchase Exposition (1904), among others. In 1923, following the Civil War, he was named the first "People's Artist of the Republic" and became a member of the AKhRR (Association of Artists). He is considered to be one of the forerunners of Socialist Realism in the arts and was sometimes called the "Gorky of Painters". Biography: Louise Abbéma, a prominent French artist of the Belle Époque, was born on October 30, 1853, in Étampes, Essonne, France. She hailed from a wealthy Parisian family with strong connections to the local artistic community. Her family’s artistic ties ran deep, as her great-grandmother was the renowned actress Louise Contat.
From a young age, Abbéma exhibited a talent for painting and began her artistic journey in her early teens. She received formal training under the guidance of notable artists of her time, such as Charles Joshua Chaplin, Jean-Jacques Henner, and Carolus-Duran. Her talent and dedication bore fruit when, at the age of 23, she painted a portrait of the legendary actress Sarah Bernhardt, who became both a lifelong friend and, speculatively, a romantic partner.
Abbéma’s artistic endeavors extended far beyond portraiture. She lent her creative touch to the embellishment of various iconic Parisian landmarks. Her panels and murals graced the Paris Town Hall, the Paris Opera House, numerous theaters (including the aptly named “Théâtre Sarah Bernhardt”), and even the “Palace of the Colonial Governor” in Dakar, Senegal. Her unique style combined academic and impressionistic elements, characterized by the use of light and rapid brushstrokes.
Recognition continued to find Abbéma, and she became a regular exhibitor at the prestigious Paris Salon, earning an honorable mention for her work in 1881. She also had the distinction of having her art displayed at the Women’s Building during the 1893 World Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Moreover, a bust of Abbéma sculpted by Sarah Bernhardt was showcased at the exposition.
Abbéma’s artistic repertoire was diverse, encompassing oil portraits and watercolors. Her work often bore the influence of Chinese and Japanese painters, as well as contemporary masters like Édouard Manet. Flowers were a recurring motif in her creations. Some of her most celebrated works include “The Seasons,” “April Morning,” “Place de la Concorde,” “Among the Flowers,” “Winter,” and portraits of prominent individuals such as actress Jeanne Samary, Emperor Dom Pedro II...

Ida Waugh was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 24, 1846, the daughter of painter Samuel B. Waugh and his first wife, Sarah Mendenhall, therefore she was half-sister of painter Frederick Judd Waugh. Her step-mother was Mary Eliza Young Waugh, a miniaturist.
She attended Académie Julian and Académie Delécluse in Paris, studying with Georges Callot, Paul-Louis Delance, and Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant.In 1868 she attended the first "Ladies Life Class" at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; in the same class there were Emily Sartain and Catherine Ann Drinker.
Career
Ida Waugh collaborated with her partner Amy Ella Blanchard in publishing children's books, Waugh as illustrator and Blanchard as writer. Waugh also published books on her own
Other than a children's book illustrator, Waugh was an award-winning painter. In 1869 she exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts two works, "The Bargain" and a portrait bust of Carl Gaertner.
Her self-portrait and another painting, "Little Cosette" (1870), are in the permanent collection of the Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia, both donated by Mrs. John S.
