About the Item
'Outstanding in His Field', oil on cardstock paper, by Raymond Debiève, 1976. The artist depicts a salt-of-the-earth farmer seated on a fence post, arms crossed with a look of wholehearted satisfaction. The artist often painted figures he met in the South of France in his post-cubist style. The choice of colours creates visual allure. Picasso's influence is undeniable yet Debiève's own naive artistic style is on display as well. In good overall condition. Newly framed and glazed with anti-reflective glass. Signed 'Debiève' in the upper right hand with the date in the lower right corner: 7th November, 1976. Where were you then? Please enjoy the many photos accompanying this listing. A video may be provided upon request.
About the Artist: Raymond Debiève (1931-2011), was born, along with his twin brother, Michel, in the North of France near the border with Belgium. Their parents, of humble origins, noted a talent for drawing and art in both of the boys and encouraged them in that direction. Unfortunately the boys were separated during the war years but reunited afterwards. They attended the School of Fine Arts in Valenciennes after WWII where they were awarded successive 1st prizes in the Concours de Encouragement à l'Art. Raymond not only painted but was a gifted sculptor of metal works as well. In 1960 he exhibited, with great success, a series of very colourful paintings at the Galerie des Flandres in Lille, France and later in his career in Paris and Switzerland. Primarily with respect to his portraits of women, Raymond was undeniably influenced by Picasso. At the same time, he has managed to forge a distinct style which is much admired and now collected. In 1962, Debiève relocated to Provence with his family where he continued to create and exhibit art until his death in the town of Orange in 2011. Since then, Debiève's star has been on the rise and his works more and more in demand internationally.

'Winter in Provence', gouache on art paper, by Raymond Debiève (circa 1970s). There is both beauty and melancholy in this delightfully charming artwork. The artist's naive style is at odds with the refinement, poise and sophistication of the painting. Perhaps the artist was making a statement as well with the broken wall...

The Happy Farmer oil painting by Gregorio Prestopino
By Gregorio Prestopino
Located in Hudson, NY
Provenance: The Artist. Menikoff collection (friends of the artist)
About this artist: Born in Little Italy in 1907, Gregorio Prestopino first set out to become a sign painter as the son of New York City immigrants. Instead, his talent provided a life-changing scholarship to the National Academy of Design, and for five years he studied drawing under C. W. Hawthorne. He spent the summer of 1934 at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire. His deep involvement with the colony led him to later serve as its director in 1954.
Much of Prestopino’s work was in the vein of social realism. During the 1940s and 1950s he became deeply invested in portraying everyday Manhattan and Harlem scenes. He first became interested in the Ashcan school at the National Academy of Design, and remained committed to an interest in working with urban scenes. His lively treatment of people and events revealed his affinity for sixteenth-century artist Pieter Breughel. Later in his career, he focused on producing images of nudes and picturesque New Hampshire landscapes, and investigated the relationship between color and form.
Prestopino exhibited at several biennials at the Corcoran Gallery, at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art. His work was frequently shown at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where he was awarded the Temple Gold Medal in 1946 and an additional prize in 1952. He was awarded a National Institute of Arts and Letter Grant in 1961, and in 1972 the National Academy of Design awarded him the Altman Figure Painting Award.
Prestopino’s artistic cache skyrocketed when Life magazine published his images from New York’s maximum security institution Green Haven as part of its “Prison Series” in 1957. That same year his paintings and sketches of urban life were featured in the short film Harlem Wednesday. Directed by John and Faith Hubley...

Personaje, figurative acrylic painting of man standing facing left
Located in San Diego, CA
"Personaje" acrylic and marker on board figurative painting of man standing, by Southern California artist Mike Rivero. Painted in red, black, green, pink on a yellow background with horizontal white line on bottom portion. The colors of the figures are saturated, contrasted by a more muted palette in the background. This contrast place the figures in a protagonist’s role. Signed at bottom left and on reverse. Dated on reverse.
Framed in blonde 1.75" wide frame (measures H 16", W 12" unframed).
Inside the studio with Mike Rivero is quite an experience. Mike not only enjoys painting, he also enjoys sharing the knowledge of art that he has acquired over the years and his love of music. Mike was born with a natural affinity to be an artist, continuing to paint over time, and later studying with private mentors. Mike is inspired by the Bay Area Figurative Art...
