About the Item

A marvelous and affecting depiction of "Elsa" the artist's wife at the kitchen table with an object not yet decided in her hand. It could be a coffee cup, a glass or a letter that the artist was intending to fill in. There are some unfinished elements to this canvas which actually make the work more compelling and give insight to the artists thoughts and handling of the composition. The face is pretty fully articulated and that is where the viewer's attention is held. We can sense that this is an era in America where this family is a regular American family and the wife is head of the household. This is not a glamorous portrait but one of everyday appreciation for what one did have and not about what one did not have. The artist and his wife had both emigrated to the United States from Sweden and from Russia. The frame is simple and complimentary. Canvas size inside frame is 24.25 x 24.25 inches The work is not signed but is directly within the estate of the artist's family

Woman with a Guitar, Cubism
By Simka Simkhovitch
Located in New York, NY
A period work by a Russian artist working in a Cubist approach. The canvas is 24 1/4 x 22 1/4 inches and the above dimension is the framed size. The frame is an older frame, with a flat gold/brown finish. In Woman with Guitar, Simkhovitch plays on his his early fascination with Cubism and Constructivism (and his background in illustration) expressing and compressing with planes and color the spatiality of a domestic scene. Considered a master draftsman and an adherent of certain classicism, Simkhovitch’s compositions are often built up in a complicated but well-managed counterpoint, at heart, he is a romanticist preferring the dreamy colors of a Russian fairy tale.
