Expressionist Portrait Paintings

EXPRESSIONIST STYLE

While “expressionist” is used to describe any art that avoids naturalism and instead employs a bold use of flattened forms and intense brushwork, Expressionist art formally describes early-20th-century work from Europe that drew on Symbolism and confronted issues such as urbanization and capitalism. Expressionist artists experimented in paintings and prints with skewed perspectives, abstraction and unconventional, bright colors to portray how isolating and anxious the world felt rather than how it appeared.

Between 1905 and 1920, Austrian and German artists, in particular, were inspired by Postimpressionists such as Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh in their efforts to strive for a new authenticity in their work. In its geometric patterns and decorative details, Expressionist art was also marked by eclectic sources like German and Russian folk art as well as tribal art from Africa and Oceania, which the movement’s practitioners witnessed at museums and world’s fairs.

Groups of artists came together to share and promote the themes now associated with Expressionism, such as Die Brücke (The Bridge) in Dresden, which included Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and investigated alienation and the dissolution of society in vivid color. In Munich, Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a group led by Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, instilled Expressionism with a search for spiritual truths. In his iconic painting The Scream, prolific Norwegian painter Edvard Munch conveyed emotional turmoil through his depiction of environmental elements, such as the threatening sky.

Expressionism shifted around the outbreak of World War I, with artists using more elements of the grotesque in reaction to the escalation of unrest and violence. Printmaking was especially popular, as it allowed artists to widely disseminate works that grappled with social and political issues amid this time of upheaval. Although the art movement ended with the rise of Nazi Germany, where Expressionist creators were labeled “degenerate,” the radical ideas of these artists would influence Neo-Expressionism that emerged in the late 1970s with painters like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Francesco Clemente.

Arike
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
"Arike" is a powerful artwork created by Fatunmbi Anjolaoluwa Grace that captures the essence of human emotions and experience. The piece is a mixed-media artwork that uses acrylic, and fabrics to create a stunning visual display. The artwork depicts a young woman gazing off into the distance, lost in thought. Her eyes are expressive, and her expression is contemplative as if she is reflecting on something deeply personal. The title of the artwork, "Arike," is a Yoruba name that means "someone who we have encountered and chosen to care for." This name is significant because it suggests that the woman in the artwork is someone who has had a profound impact on the artist's life, and the artwork is a tribute to her. The use of traditional African clothing in the artwork is also significant. It speaks to the artist's cultural heritage and identity and adds a layer of meaning to the piece. Overall, "Arike" is a stunning piece of artwork that captures the complexity and depth of human experience. The use of mixed media, traditional African aesthetics, and the contemplative expression on the woman's face all contribute to making this artwork a powerful visual display. Fatunmbi Anjolaoluwa Grace has created a masterpiece that speaks to the human condition and the importance of connecting with others. Shipping Procedure Ships in a well-protected tube from Nigeria This work is unique, not a print or other type of copy. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity (Issued by the Gallery) About Artist Anjolaoluwa Arike Fatunmbi is an artist based in the southwest city of Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria. Her medium of art is expressed in traditional Adire and Ankara fabric with a blend of acrylic on canvas. Her journey into art began at an early stage while watching her father work on various forms of art as a seasoned professional. For, Arike, Art was second nature as she lived and dreamed of art in an environment beaming with top professionals and ardent art enthusiasts. As she advanced in age with a broader exposure to the vicissitudes of life and a deeper understanding of how human nature transcends and reinvents in a constantly changing circle, her works are consciously impacted by her cultural roots and personal experiences. Arike’s textile art is composed of intricate compositions of layers of fabric, flowery patterns, and detailed attention to the markings of the female features. Her pieces are reflective of her personality as she loves to incorporate vibrant colors and whimsical designs. With her early start in the Art scene, Arike has been able to apprentice under renowned masters in the Art sector like the globally acclaimed proponent of Contemporary Black Art, Oluwole Omofemi. Her work was selected for the prestigious Art fellowship themed: Telling textile tales. The program sponsored by the British Council had in attendance notable heavyweights like Uzoma Samuel and Laura Jones among other participants. She successfully presented papers on the forms of Art she practice and the ethics guiding her creative enterprise. She has also been greatly inspired by leading female artists in the likes of Marcellina Akpojotor, Bisa Butler...

Lunch at Chez Louis
Located in London, GB
'Lunch at Chez Louis', oil on canvas, by Roland Dubuc (circa 1970s). The outdoor terrace at restaurants and cafés in France goes back centuries as they have always been a gathering place for intellectuals to meet and debate philosophical issues; for the Avant Garde set to display their works; for artists to compare and exchange ideas and for writers to drown their sorrows over their artistic anguish or melancholy. Even the freedom fighters of the French Revolution and later the French Resistance would meet in cafés to plot their course. Regular people of course also enjoy these venues. A very delightful feature of these French institutions is that there is always room for quiet book readers, romantic couples, business meetings and lively groups of friends sharing a bottle of wine. The artist Dubuc captures a slice of this lovely aspect of French culture in this smile-inducing depiction painted in vivid oils. With a background of greenery, the patrons enjoy the outdoors protected from the intense sun by the table's parasols. Ah, the life. The artwork is in good vintage condition, is framed and signed by the artist in the lower left hand corner. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying this listing. Upon request a video may be provided. About the Artist: Roland DuBuc (1924-1998), French artist, the sixth of 13 children and son of a construction worker. The very precariousness of the family's financial situation forced him to go to work at the age of 14. In extreme poverty, he moved to Rouen where he was lodged by the Salvation Army. During that time he struck up friendships with several artists who gave him advice and taught him techniques of drawing. He moved to other cities later where he met painters including, among others, Fred Pailhès...

The lady is depicted wearing a blue dress with intricate details and patterns. Ayandare Adeniran, Ayanmuyiwa behind this intriguing piece of art has managed to capture the essence of the Yoruba culture, which is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and traditional beliefs. The use of the Sekere in the artwork is symbolic of the Yoruba people's deep-rooted love for music and the arts, which are considered an integral part of their daily lives. The lady in the artwork, with her head made of Sekere, is a representation of the Yoruba deity, Oshun, who is revered as the goddess of love, fertility, and prosperity. According to Yoruba mythology, Oshun is believed to be the owner of the Sekere and is often depicted carrying it around during festive celebrations and ceremonies. Nirvana
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
The artwork titled "Nirvana" is a stunning representation of a woman with a sophisticated hairstyle and a fabric costumed suit. This piece of art is an unapologetic celebration of feminine power and grace, and Fatunmbi Anjolaoluwa Grace has expertly captured the essence of womanhood in every brushstroke. The sophisticated hairstyle of the woman in the artwork is a testament to the artist's skill and attention to detail. The intricate braids and weaves symbolize the many challenges that women face in their daily lives, yet they still manage to maintain their composure and elegance. The hairstyle is a reflection of the woman's inner strength and determination. The fabric costumed suit adds another layer of depth to the artwork. The suit is designed to fit the woman's body perfectly, highlighting her feminine form and celebrating her womanhood. The fabrics used are luxurious and elegant, further emphasizing the woman's sophistication and grace. The name "Nirvana" is fitting for this artwork, as it symbolizes a state of perfect happiness and enlightenment. The woman in the artwork exudes a sense of peace and contentment as if she has reached a state of enlightenment and is at one with herself and the world around her. Some may argue that this artwork objectifies women, but I firmly believe that it celebrates their beauty and strength. Women should be proud of their femininity and should not be ashamed to celebrate it. Fatunmbi Anjolaoluwa Grace has created a stunning representation of a woman who is comfortable in her own skin and is not afraid to express her feminine power and grace. Furthermore, the artist's choice to create this artwork with a woman of color is significant. The representation of diverse women in art is essential in promoting inclusivity and challenging the traditional beauty standards that have been set by society. The artist has expertly captured the essence of womanhood in every brushstroke, from the sophisticated hairstyle to the fabric costumed suit.
