About the Item
Dahlias and Roses is a 14" x 10" oil on panel painting by European /Croatian artist Tina Orsolic Dalessio who is classically trained. This is part of her new 2024 series of still-life paintings featuring florals. Dahlias symbolize elegance, creativity, positivity, and growth. It also represents inner strength, likely due to the plant's ability to tolerate harsh conditions. Other general meanings associated with the dahlia is gracefulness, standing out in a crowd, and embracing positive changes. The rose is known as “the queen of flowers,” and much of the rose's symbolism reflects its regal title. Roses symbolize love, royalty, beauty, sensuality, secrecy, and mysticism. They are also associated with achievement and perfection. Roses are prized around the world, among the most beloved and popular flowers.
Tina Orsolic Dalessio is a figurative and still-life painter born in Zagreb, Croatia. She received her formal academic training at the prestigious Florence Academy of Art in Italy, during which time she was granted a meritorious scholarship. She graduated from Florence Academy of Art in 2018.
Tina also holds a bachelor’s degree from University of Zagreb Law School, an LL.M. degree from the University of Michigan Law School and a PhD degree from the University of Maastricht, Faculty of Law. Before becoming a painter, she taught philosophy of law at the University of Zagreb.
Tina’s work has been widely exhibited in various galleries in the United States, France and England. Her work has also been shown in the National Portrait Gallery, London where she received the prestigious BP People’s Choice Portrait Award. Most recently, she was given her first solo exhibition at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg. Her works can be found in numerous private collections in the United States and Europe.
Alongside her husband Marc Dalessio, she discovered her passion for fine art, which led her to a life changing decision to leave academia and devote herself fully to painting.
Artist Statement:
I am a classically trained artist who specializes in painting from life, under natural light, in the medium of oil paint. My objective is to paint ‘slice-of-life’ scenes, thereby witnessing and articulating the beauty of the world around me, as authentically as possible. My subject matter ranges from portraits and still lives to landscapes. I take particular joy working en plein air, exposed to the elements and immersed in nature.
In my opinion, art, perhaps more than any other social phenomenon, best reflects the shifting tides of human consciousness. Therefore, being involved in arts, and more particularly, being a part of the artistic movement that at its core entails a careful observation, admiration and respect of the natural world around us, gives me a strong sense of purpose and hope. This reemerging naturalistic movement that I consider myself a part of, rests on humility and acknowledgement of how precious, beautiful and fragile our world is.
As an artist who considers it her mission to take in the beauty around her, and let it out as art, I hope to gently remind others of that same truth regarding the miracle and delicacy of the human condition. In doing that, I hope to become a small drop in the river of thought pointing to the more general shift of human consciousness towards a deep respect for our Mother Nature. For we all are, in every aspect of our existence, intrinsically tied to it.
