Tracy Stuckey received his BFA in painting from Florida State University and his MFA from the University of New Mexico. He has exhibited his work extensively throughout the United States, with numerous solo and group exhibitions, including shows curated by gallery owner Linda Durham and artist Joel Peter Witkin. He has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards, most recently the Professional Development Grant from the West Virginia Division of Culture and History. In 2009 he was an artist-in-residence at the Center for Land Use Interpretation in Wendover, Utah. Also a professor, Stuckey has taught at West Virginia University, and most recently, Colorado State University. Tracy and his wife, artist Erika Osborne, live in Fort Collins, Colorado. "My paintings operate in a fictitious world that utilizes the mythologies and realities of the modern American West. Because of its unique history, the Western United States is more than just a location; it is a label, a persona and most importantly a cultural identity. The word "Western" is a category; it is used to describe films, literature, music, art, and fashion. In my work I use the cowboy and cowgirl and other stereotypical Western themes coupled with pop cultural depictions of the region to reflect my own interpretations of the contemporary West. Provenance Acquired by the gallery directly from the artist Artist Statement “I often will go on painting trips with other artists to remote locations to do plein air sketches and gather reference for larger studio paintings. This was painted from a winter painting trip to Montana, where about ten of us gathered together at a cabin in February to paint landscapes and portraits in the snow. The morning when I saw this scene, we were all heading out into the fresh snow to go paint landscape—my artist friend was standing just outside the door of the cabin in this pose, contemplating the day ahead and looking like a painting himself! The early morning sky was white, as fresh snow was falling all around, blanketing the landscape and tree behind him. The sky and the figure in the painting change in various paintings in the series. This is a relatively peaceful figure (sword at side) and fair sky (blue, no clouds). Other works from this series are more turbulent. Richards is an uncommon artist whose work is both conceptually and aesthetically engaging. The sky in this painting has a beautiful luminosity and depth. The painting measures 62” x 36” (64” x 38” framed). It is composed of oil on canvas and is in very good condition. The frame is also in good condition and works well with the painting. This figurative painting titled "ELEGANT" is an original artwork by Lauren Rinaldi made of oil on canvas. This piece measures 60"h x 30"w. Please note: Artwork will be on display at The State Museum of Pennsylvania (300 North St, Harrisburg, PA) from September 26, 2021 – January 2, 2022, and will be shipped to collectors after the museum exhibition. Rinaldi’s new series was inspired by the feminist debate on how women's appearances are constantly judged, criticized and dissected; often done so with the intent of diminishing their work and contributions. This issue is prevalent in all industries, but especially in the very public and important realm of politics. Throughout mainstream media, Rinaldi found countless examples of coverage depicting what a female politician was wearing and why it was deemed “inappropriate”, rather than discussing their policies. Typical of Rinaldi’s practice, most of the works found in Representative are not classic portraits, but zoomed in studies of the subject’s legs, shoes and body from the neck down. By doing so, the work focuses on the experiences and outside societal forces that these women, and women like them, have faced. To create the works in Representative, Rinaldi used sourced photographs of female politicians that felt meaningful and powerful to her. Before painting or drawing, Rinaldi manipulates each image through cropping, elongating or changing its composition, background and color. Color is especially important in Representative, as it is an expression that is frequently rejected or criticized in politics by men. Rinaldi uses vibrant jewel tones and color swaps, like Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s jacket from black to fuchsia, to represent the bold new ideas and diversity these women are bringing to United States politics. While Rinaldi does not specifically name any of her subjects, viewers will be able to recognize familiar leaders from across both sides of the aisle.
