'Still Life of Fruit', Grande Chaumiere, Hans Hofmann, NY ASL, Monhegan, PAFA
Located in Santa Cruz, CA
Signed lower right, 'A. Minewski' for Alexander Minewski (American, 1917-1979) and painted circa 1950. Born in Detroit, Alexander Minewski left home at the age of 14 to work in the circus. He subsequently worked as a sign painter and a logger. Minewski first studied at the Society of Arts and Crafts in Detroit (1936-1939) and received scholarships that allowed him to attend the Art Students League in New York City (1939-1942). There, he studied under artists including Jean Charlot, Ernest Fiene, George Grosz and Vaclav Vytlacil. During World War II, Minewski joined the army and fought as a combat engineer. Wounded in Burma while fighting with Merrill's Marauders, he spent two years there recovering from his wounds. Following his time in Burma, Minewski studied for two years on the G.I. Bill in Paris at the Académie de la Grande Chaumiere (1950-1952) and, independently, with Hans Hofmann in New York City (1952-1953). Hofmann was influential on his style and his work shifted away from a moody realism towards a fuller expressionism. In 1954, Minewski began spending his summers at the artist’s colony in Monhegan Island, Maine. While there, he was able to work and collaborate with other artists and friends such as Ted Davis...

Portrait of Young Girl Gouache Painting by Max Moreau
By Max Moreau
Located in Atlanta, GA
1950s portrait, gouache on paper painting by Belgian artist Max Moreau (1902 - 1992). A finely detailed portrait of a lovely young girl looking like a good child from the period right after WWII. Moreau captures the sweet expression, soft features, and calm, well-mannered demeanor of that child. Hand-signed and dated on the bottom right corner. The artist demonstrates incredible skill in detailing this portrait with gouache and watercolor. This skill has made his portraits so desirable for international collectors. The painting still has its original elegant mahogany carved frame with glass protection. Measurements: With frame: 25.19 in wide (64 cm) x 30.32 in high (77 cm) x 2.38 in deep (6 cm). Opening view: 19.69 in wide (50 cm) x 24.50 in high (62 cm). Note: Max Leon Moreau (1902 - 1992) Moreau is a highly acclaimed artist born in Belgium. He is best known for his loosely brushed street scenes of Paris, Granada, and North Africa and his revealing portraits of met characters during his foreign travels. Taught to paint by his father, the family moved to Paris, where he made copies of paintings at the Louvre Museum. Later Moreau and his family lived in Tunisia and Morocco before settling in Granada, Spain. Following his death in 1992, his home was converted into a museum dedicated to his life and work. His paintings are internationally collected and appear at auction in major international houses. Max spent his last 30 years living in his Moorish-style house in Granada, which upon his death, was bequeathed to the City of Granada along with the contents of his studio and artwork. The City of Granada has turned his home into a museum showcasing his paintings, studio, and private life. The main building of the Casa Museo Max Moreau houses an exhibition space that takes us on a journey through his most common themes: portraits, still-life, and landscapes, represented through oil paintings, watercolors, and drawings on paper. There is also a series of models for theatre creations that illustrate his interest and relationship to the scenic arts (he was involved in many productions as an actor, playwright, musician, and set designer). The building is an original from the region of Albayzín and is popularly known as Carmen. Does the name come from the Arabic word Karm which means vine, orchard, or garden.?The second building houses his studio, remained untouched: the easel next to the window, a piano with scores, and a collection of oriental objects...

Horse & Rider - Expressionist Portrait Oil Painting by Gen Paul
Located in Marlow, Buckinghamshire
Signed expressionist oil on board portrait circa 1950 by French painter and engraver Gen Paul. This charming work depicts a jockey wearing red jacket and breeches seated on a white horse. This work is likely a painting of the fictional character Don Quixote from the novel by Miguel De Cervantes. Paul painted this subject on numerous occasions. Signature: Signed lower right Dimensiosn: Framed: 26.5"x21.5" Unframed: 16"x11" Provenance: Private French collection of the work of Gen Paul Gen-Paul was born in the Rue Lepic, at the heart of Montmartre. His mother was an embroiderer, and his father was a café musician. Gen-Paul began painting from a young age. An apprentice interior decorative artist, he looked about him in the wealthy apartments where his work took him and observed the pieces collected by art lovers, and he learned anatomy by getting to know surgeons and going with them into operating theatres. He also attended the École des Beaux-Arts. He painted on discarded cigar boxes using coloured supplements from L'Illustration as models. This was in 1913. At the outbreak of World War I he volunteered for service and was wounded; a year later a second wound led to the amputation of his right leg. Back in Paris in 1916, he began to paint. His first oil painting, the Moulin de la Galette seen from his window, dates from 1916. His early works are not easy to identify, as he painted many views of Paris to satisfy customers who wanted a painting 'in the style of so-and-so'. In 1918 he first signed a canvas Gen-Paul. In 1920 he showed work at the Salon d'Automne, remaining faithful to this institution and to the Salon des Indépendants. His first solo show took place in the Galerie Bing in 1926. He illustrated several of Céline's books, including Journey to the End of Night, Death on Tick ( Voyage au bout de la nuit, Mort à crédit) in 1942. He also produced engravings, some of which were published as a collection entitled Views of Montmartre ( Les vues de Montmartre). When World War II ended he travelled frequently to the USA and New York. In 1952 the Galerie Drouant-David in Paris put on a retrospective dedicated to him. Gen-Paul did not exhibit much, had no dealer, and travelled frequently in France and Spain. Posthumous collective exhibitions include: Galerie Roussard...

La Contrebasse - Expressionist Musician Portrait Oil by Gen Paul
Located in Marlow, Buckinghamshire
Signed expressionist oil on canvas portrait by French painter and engraver Gen Paul. This charming work depicts a seated musician wearing a green suit with a black bow tie playing the double bass. This beautiful example of Gen Paul's work dates to the 1950's when he painted numerous studies of musicians playing various instruments in jazz such as the saxophone, violin and the double bass. His interest in this was likely based upon his father's career as a cafe musician. VERY IMPORTANT EARLY COBRA WORK OF ART Karel Appel B. 1921, AMSTERDAM; D. 2006, ZURICH Karel Appel was born on April 25, 1921, in Amsterdam. From 1940 to 1943 he studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam. In 1946 his first solo show was held at Het Beerenhuis, Groningen, Netherlands, and he participated in Jonge Schilders (Young painters) at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. About this time, Appel was influenced first by Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, then by Jean Dubuffet. The style distinguished itself through bold, expressive compositions inspired by folk and children's art, as well as by the work of Paul Klee and Joan Miró. In 1949 Appel completed a fresco for the cafeteria of the city hall in Amsterdam, which created such controversy that it was covered for ten years. In 1950 the artist moved to Paris; there the writer Hugo Claus...

Expressionist Color Drawing Cobalt Glass Vintage Frame Modernist Ben Zion WPA
Located in Surfside, FL
Expressionist ink and pastel crayon drawing of flowers in vase. Framed in a vintage cobalt blue glass original frame Hand signed and dated Framed it measures 13.5 X 10.5 The actual paper is 7.5 X 5.5 Born in 1897, Ben-Zion Weinman celebrated his European Jewish heritage in his visual works as a sculptor, painter, and printmaker. Influenced by Spinoza, Knut Hamsun, and Wladyslaw Reymont, as well as Hebrew literature, Ben-Zion wrote poetry and essays that, like his visual work, attempt to reveal the deep “connection between man and the divine, and between man and earth.” An emigrant from the Ukraine, he came to the US in 1920. He wrote fairy tales and poems in Hebrew under the name Benzion Weinman, but when he began painting he dropped his last name and hyphenated his first, saying an artist needed only one name. Ben-Zion was a founding member of “The Ten: An Independent Group” The Ten” a 1930’s avant-garde group, Painted on anything handy. Ben-Zion often used cabinet doors (panels) in his work. Other members of group included Ilya Bolotowsky, Lee Gatch, Adolph Gottlieb, Louis Harris, Yankel Kufeld, Marcus Rothkowitz (later known as Mark Rothko), Louis Schanker, and Joseph Solman. The Art of “The Ten” was generally described as expressionist, as this style offered the best link between modernism and social art. Their exhibition at the Mercury Gallery in New York held at the same time as the Whitney Annual Exhibition of Contemporary American Painting, included a manifesto concentrating on aesthetic questions and criticisms of the conservative definition of modern art imposed by the Whitney. Ben-Zion’s work was quickly noticed. The New York Sun said he painted “furiously” and called him “the farthest along of the lot.” And the triptych, “The Glory of War,” was described by Art News as “resounding.” By 1939, The Ten disbanded because most of the members found individual galleries to represent their work. Ben-Zion had his first one-man show at the Artist’s Gallery in Greenwich Village and J.B. Neumann, the highly esteemed European art dealer who introduced Paul Klee, (among others) to America, purchased several of Ben-Zion’s drawings. Curt Valentin, another well-known dealer, exhibited groups of his drawings and undertook the printing of four portfolios of etchings, each composed of Ben-Zion’s biblical themes. He worked as a WPA artist. Ben-Zion’s work is represented in many museums throughout the country including the Metropolitan, the Whitney, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Phillips Collection, Washington. The Jewish Museum in New York opened in 1948 with a Ben-Zion exhibition. Ben-Zion consistently threaded certain subject matter—nature, still life, the human figure, the Hebrew Bible, and the Jewish people—into his work throughout his life. "In all his work a profound human feeling remains. Sea and sky, even sheaves of wheat acquire a monolithic beauty and simplicity which delineates the transient as a reflection of the eternal. This sensitive inter- mingling of the physical and metaphysical is one of the most enduring features of Ben-Zion's works." (Excerpt from Stephen Kayser, “Biblical Paintings,” The Jewish Museum Catalogue, 1952). Mystical Imprints: Marc Chagall, Ben-Zion, and Ben Shahn presents the print work of three prominent 20th century Jewish artists born in the Russian Empire. Ade Witboi - Rare Book Illustrated by George Grosz - 1955
Located in Roma, IT
Ade Witboi is an original modern rare book with illustrations by George Grosz (Berlin, 1823 - 1959, Berlin), published in 1955. Original First Edition. Published by Arani, Berlin Grunewald. Format: in 4°. The book includes XXII pages with 47 fullpage black and white drawings and 4 colored pages. Mint conditions. George Grosz (Berlin, 1823 - 1959, Berlin). In drawing collections such as The Face of the Ruling Class (1921) and Ecce Homo (1922), Grosz depicts fat Junkers, greedy capitalists, smug bourgeoisie, drinkers, and lechers—as well as hollow-faced factory labourers, the poor, and the unemployed. At this time Grosz belonged to the Berlin Dada art movement, having befriended the German Dadaist brothers Wieland Herzfelde and John Heartfield...
