Abstract Color Photography

ABSTRACT STYLE

Beginning in the early 20th century, abstract art became a leading style of modernism. Rather than portray the world in a way that represented reality, as had been the dominating style of Western art in the previous centuries, abstract paintings, prints and sculptures are marked by a shift to geometric forms, gestural shapes and experimentation with color to express ideas, subject matter and scenes.

Although abstract art flourished in the early 1900s, propelled by movements like Fauvism and Cubism, it was rooted in the 19th century. In the 1840s, J.M.W. Turner emphasized light and motion for atmospheric paintings in which concrete details were blurred, and Paul Cézanne challenged traditional expectations of perspective in the 1890s.

Some of the earliest abstract artists — Wassily Kandinsky and Hilma af Klint — expanded on these breakthroughs while using vivid colors and forms to channel spiritual concepts. Painter Piet Mondrian, a Dutch pioneer of the art movement, explored geometric abstraction partly owing to his belief in Theosophy, which is grounded in a search for higher spiritual truths and embraces philosophers of the Renaissance period and medieval mystics. Black Square, a daringly simple 1913 work by Russian artist Kazimir Malevich, was a watershed statement on creating art that was free “from the dead weight of the real world,” as he later wrote.

Surrealism in the 1920s, led by artists such as Salvador Dalí, Meret Oppenheim and others, saw painters creating abstract pieces in order to connect to the subconscious. When Abstract Expressionism emerged in New York during the mid-20th century, it similarly centered on the process of creation, in which Helen Frankenthaler’s expressive “soak-stain” technique, Jackson Pollock’s drips of paint, and Mark Rothko’s planes of color were a radical new type of abstraction.

Conceptual art, Pop art, Hard-Edge painting and many other movements offered fresh approaches to abstraction that continued into the 21st century, with major contemporary artists now exploring it, including Anish Kapoor, Mark Bradford, El Anatsui and Julie Mehretu.

Irons and Tomatoes: still life color photograph w/ abstract shadow patterns, sm
Located in Bryn Mawr, PA
This is an archival pigment print depicting an abstracted still life printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 308 gsm by artist Paul Cava. It is from the "Table Top" series, which is one of three series, along with his "Still Life" and his "Flora" series, making up a larger body of work produced between the years 2019-2021. The leading actor in this three-part drama is the late afternoon light with the supporting cast being the objects of his attention -- a deer antler, a dying flower, plaster casts of his daughter’s hand and foot, the various vessels and forms in relation to each other as the light moves across their surfaces. The elephant in the room for the latter work is the lockdown mood that intensifies and thickens the air in these still lifes. Image size is approx. 14 1/2 x 11” printed on 19 x 13” sheets, edition of 10. Also available as image size approx. 19 x 14 1/4” printed on 22 x 17” sheets, edition of 5 ($2,500) - listed separately. Signed, titled, dated and numbered lower margin. Brooklyn-born artist Paul Cava began his career as an artist in the late 1960's. Cava made his first explorations as a poet, multi-media artist, filmmaker, photographer and painter. He finally settled in the last three decades on a hybrid form of expression that synthesized his previous efforts and anticipated the current digital use of photography by combining photographs, words, collage, drawing, painting, and printmaking into his own visual language, the core of which is a personal visual poetry. Cava has exhibited paintings, drawings and photo-based works from 1976 to the present in galleries and museums in the United States and Europe. His work has been collected by a broad range of private and public institutions, including The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Princeton University Museum of Art, and The Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris. His work has been featured in many publications including "Eyemazing Magazine" and "Das Magazin." Cava was a recipient of Pennsylvania Council on the Arts grants in 1981 and 1999. In 2005, the German publisher Edition Galerie Vevais released "Walt Whitman and Paul Cava / Children of Adam," a deluxe volume of Cava’s photo-based art and Walt Whitman’s poetry. The artist’s second book, "Paul Cava: Photographs Collages...

Pando #1 by Karine Laval - Colour Abstract Photography, Woodland Photography
Located in Brighton, GB
Pando Forest #6 is available in an Edition of 5 + 2 Artist Proofs. Laval's new body of work continues her ongoing exploration of light in nature. Combining the natural landscape with a radical manipulation of light, Laval creates an other-worldly scape that bridges the gap between our reality and one that could only ever be imagined. The Pando Forest is an incredible display of vegetation in Utah's Fishlake National Park in the United States. Comprised of over 40,000 individual trees, this forest is really one living organism. Connected by one enormous root system, the forest continues to exist by producing clones of itself in response to environmental stresses. Creating small, temporary interventions in the organic landscape, Laval takes natural and artificial light and observes the interaction in nature through reflective surfaces. Marine blues and plush magentas describe this living organism, while radiant aquamarines...

Space Field, Digital Iris Print Muse X Large Photograph on Heavy Paper
Located in Surfside, FL
These are from the 1990s printed at Muse X and never framed. they are unsigned and unnumbered but from a very small edition. they are quite beautiful. Victor Raphael was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1950. He studied art and theater at California State University Northridge and graduated from UCLA. He has exhibited throughout the nation and abroad. In 1996, his work was among the 50 best examples of Polaroid photography included in Polaroid 50: Art and Technology, an international touring exhibition commemorating the company’s 50th anniversary. He works in a wide range of media spanning painting, photography, filmmaking, printmaking, and digital technology. He creates complex and beautiful images that expand conventional views of time and space. For the past three decades, Raphael has produced a unique body of work by merging traditional media such as painting, photography and printmaking with modern electronic media, including video, digital printing and interactive technologies. In addition to his central themes of the exploration of the cosmos and aspects of travel–through space or time–and their visual records, the artist has developed an important body of paintings, in which water, for instance, and its protean and timeless qualities, form an important part. His photography process of digitally manipulating NASA photographs of planets and other natural celestial phenomena into Polaroid prints, and next altering them by hand with metallic paints and gold and metal leaf.
