This photograph features a cowgirl riding a light colored horse, resting at a river. The horse reaches down to the water for a drink, while the woman looks down lovingly at the horse.
John Stryker was born in Rockford, Illinois, September 1, 1883. He is most remembered for his body of photographs he took of the "Olympic of Western sport"*- the Rodeo. During his lifetime he crossed America, working rodeos as an announcer, a producer, promoter and sometimes a rider. He invented the chute that the animals come out of and he developed new ways of photographing action during an event.
Dramatic shots were taken from the ground, propping his camera on the toe of his right boot right next to a bucking bronco.
Some historians believe that John Stryker was directly responsible for the growth and sophistication of the sport.
His negatives are in the collection of the University of Texas at Permian Basin, Odessa. His photographs have been exhibited during his lifetime at the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, Wyoming, and the Amon Carter Museum in Ft. Worth, Texas. Mario Algaze was a contemporary Cuban-American photographer whose work celebrated the culture of Latin America.
In 1960, at the age of thirteen, Algaze was exiled from Cuba with his family. He relocated to America and settled in Miami, Florida. Miami offered a rich cultural mecca that encouraged Algaze to travel throughout Central and South America. These trips allowed him a glimpse of belonging within a familiar culture.
In finding his identity after exile, he began photographing Latin America in the 1970’s while reconnecting with the feeling of home. His photographs embody the everyday of Latin life. Between his travels in the late 70’s, Algaze studied visual art at Miami Dade College. Algaze’s masterful command of light illuminates his street scenes that detail the struggles and victories of Latin culture.
Mario Algaze was the recipient of various acclaimed awards, including the Florida Artist Fellowship from the Florida Arts Council (1985), the Cintas Foundation Fellowship in Photography (1991), the Visual Arts Fellowship and the SAF Artist Fellowship sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts. In 1992, he received the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Photography.
A retrospective collection of his work was showcased in the important monograph, Mario Algaze: Portfolio, published by Di Puglia Publisher, 2010. A young man crouches on a rocky outcrop, approached by a small tortoise. He wears an archetypal service uniform, his jacket cuffs with bands of gold braiding, and polished brass buttons. His banded cap is of a sort later appropriated from the military for use in private service, and his loose socks and mud-spattered brogues remind of British schoolboys. A distant arched structure can be seen beyond, perhaps a small bridge over water. The photograph was taken by Lichfield on a visit to the Empty Quarter with his lifelong friend Hugh Myddelton Biddulph, of Chirk Castle, Wales. The visit was one of Lichfield’s earliest to the Middle East, which he would revisit throughout his career. The pair travelled through the region on a Mini Moke, carrying basic supplies and sleeping in a teepee. The photograph was left after Myddelton’s death to his second wife Gaia Servadio, the eccentric Italian journalist, writer, and first mother-in-law to Boris Johnson. After her death in 2021, it passed to her artist son Orlando Mostyn-Owen, and later into a private British collection.
Patrick Lichfield was born in 1939, the son of Thomas Anson, Viscount Anson, and Anne Bowes-Lyon, later Princess Anne of Denmark. After seven years in the Grenadier Guards, Lichfield began his career as a photographer’s assistant in 1962 to Kasterine and Michael Wallis, after which he earned a five-year contract with American Vogue. He benefited greatly from his access to the royal family, since Queen Elizabeth was his maternal first cousin. In 1981 he took the official photograph for the wedding of the Prince and Princess of Wales. Although best known for his portraits of the royal family, Lichfield’s celebrity portraits included Yves Saint Laurent, Jane Birkin, Cecil Beaton, David Hockney, Kate Bush, Ian McKellen, Joan Collins, Joanna Lumley...

The history of photography has always included the genre of the nude. In the last decade, there is a new perspective in considering the female form. Women photographers are able to capture the nude, not from a position of who holds the power in the relationship, to more of an examination of form without the whisper of sexuality. I have recently revisited my exploration of nudes, this time only from behind the camera. My revelation is that I perceive the subject as a whole, complex human being, giving me the gift of seeing them profoundly. The performance of photographer and subject is on equal footing as we both work within an area of trust and curiosity. What are we really revealing to the camera as one stands before it? Ultimately the experience connects us not only in our shared experience, but as two women, both bringing a level of acceptance and courage to our efforts. It is exhilarating to change the masculine history of photography into a feminine one.
