Located in San Francisco, CA
Artist: Stuart Klipper (American, 1941- ) Title: Vulcan Arunel, Costa Rica Year: 1989 Medium: C Print (Chromogenic print) Size: 12 x 38 inches image, 16 x 44 inches sheet, 18 x 45 inches matted. Unframed Signature: Signed, titled, dated, artist’s stamp on reverse Condition: Very good This photograph depicts the landmark volcano Vulcan Arunal in Costa Rica. It is a chromogenic print, also called a C-print on Kodak paper. It was done in 1989 when Klipper visited Costa Rica. He said this about the photographs that came from that experience: “- In the Rain Forest: The Specifications of Life, photographs made deep inside the rain forest preserves of Costa Rica; these forests are essential to planetary health and threatened everywhere; I wanted to ‘swim’ in the densest soup of DNA anywhere. [1989]” The photograph is in very good condition. The mat is in very good condition. Stuart Klipper was born in the Bronx in 1941. He then lived in Stockholm, Sweden, moved to Minneapolis in 1970 and currently resides there. He has made six visits to Antarctica to photograph, and has also worked in Greenland, Iceland, Svalbard, Alaska and Lapland (in the area irradiated by the Chernobyl disaster). Other major forays have taken him across Northern Australia; the deserts of Israel and Sinai; the tropical rain forests of Costa Rica, Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego; and Sri Lanka and Pakistan. He has logged many thousands of miles at sea, photographing on all of the Earth's oceans... and seas. For over 30 years, he has made photographs in all 50 states, distilling and crystallizing the defining characteristics of American regions. Other undertakings include extensively photographing the First World War cemeteries and memorials of the Western Front, major physics and astronomy research installations throughout the U.S. and the Anasazi ruins of the Southwest. His photographs have been exhibited in, and collected by, major museums in the U.S. and overseas; foremost, the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Walker Art Center, The Jewish Museum, the Israel Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Kunsthalle Bonn and the Moderna Museet. Frame size: 20-1/2 x 16-1/2" Suzanne Camp Crosby Posted by FMoPA Apr 7, 2021 FMoPA In Focus 0 Suzanne Camp Crosby, Gasparilla Ship, 2004 In December of 2020 beloved Tampa photographer and educator Suzanne Camp Crosby died. She had taught generations of students at the Hillsborough Community College where she had been a professor of photography for 38 years. Camp Crosby had the prestigious honor of being the 2004 City of Tampa Photo Laureate and the exhibition resulting from that body of work, Suzanne Camp Crosby: 2004 Photo Laureate City of Tampa Public Art – Big Picture Project, was presented at the Tampa Museum of Art that same year. Other awards include a Southeast Artist Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in 1978-79. Suzanne Camp Crosby, Paper Flowers, c. 1990 The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts (FMoPA) has gratefully accepted the task of helping to place the photographic archives of this beloved artist. This collection includes more than 725 photographs spanning her career of over 40 years. A broad selection of this work will be brought into the collection of FMoPA, with an exhibition to follow in the summer of 2022. Other institutions in the area are also considering simultaneous showings. University of Tampa student Alyssa R. Miller has signed on to help with the documenting and digitizing of this body of work. This will help make it possible to distribute photographs to other institutions, with limited works to be sold to help finance the efforts. Examples of her photography are already currently held in the collections of FMoPA, the Tampa Museum of Art (TMA), Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the New Orleans Museum of Art, among many others. Three wonderful examples of her talent are currently on view at the TMA’s exhibition Her World in Focus: Women Photographers from the Permanent Collection, on view until June 27, 2021. Suzanne Camp Crosby, Doris Day at Clothesline, 1980 Camp Crosby’s solo exhibitions include Suzanne Camp Crosby: Kid City, 2009 at FMoPA, and multiple exhibitions at the HCC Galleries, where she eventually became the Program Manager for the Visual Art and Dance departments in addition to her teaching and exhibitions. She also taught and received her MFA at the University of South Florida in Tampa. Additional schools where she was an instructor include the University of Central Florida in Orlando, FL, and the St. Petersburg College, Clearwater campus. Camp Crosby specialized in creating thematically directed photographs, created by adding unexpected objects or people to mostly everyday scenes. Her artwork is often playful and witty. Early work included tender black and white compositions often using her children or friends to create evocative scenes. Later photographs brought in color and experimentation. Examples include the juxtaposition of life-sized 2-D paper doll cut-outs of 1950s movie stars to real-life mundane household settings, as well as a wide selection of other artificial items placed into real-life settings. As a visual storyteller, she continued to explore and experiment with ideas and themes throughout her lengthy career. Courtesy The FLORIDA MUSEUM of PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTS Suzanne’s artwork is in many permanent collections, including the Tampa Museum of Art, the USF Museum of Contemporary Art, the Orlando Museum of Art, the Polk Museum of Art, the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts, the Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art, the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Walt Disney World Corporation, Tropicana Corporate Collection, City Bank, Tampa Electric Company, Shriner’s Hospital, Tampa General Hospital, Hillsborough Community College, City of Tampa Public Art, City of Orlando Public Art, and the von Liebig Art Center. From ARTFORUM JULIE SAUL (1954–2022) Julie Saul, who through her long-running eponymous New York gallery did much to elevate contemporary photography within the art world, died February 4 in Tampa after a battle with a rare form of leukemia. Saul was known for her willingness to show an eclectic range of works in media ranging from painting to sculpture to video to ceramics by an equally diverse range of artists, but it was her eye for both traditional and avant-garde contemporary photography that cemented her reputation and that of her gallery, which she first established in 1986 in SoHo, then a frontier for the arts. Saul was born in Tampa on New Year’s Eve in 1954 to a father who was head of a sewn-products company and a housewife mother, a native New Yorker and volunteer docent whom Saul would later credit with introducing her to the arts. “Tampa had no museums, but she would take us to museums in New York,” she told the Tampa Bay Timesin 2003. “We had a house that wasn't filled with great art, but there were great reproductions and great art books.” In 1979, Saul moved to New York, obtaining her master’s degree from New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts in 1982. Four years later, with partner Nancy Lieberman, she opened Lieberman Saul Gallery at 155 Spring Street in SoHo, showing contemporary photography at a time when not many others were. “One thing that drew me to photography from the very beginning—and it still holds—is that photography is an affordable medium. Almost anybody can afford to collect photographs,” she told the Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) in 2010. “Fundamentally, photography is a medium and what makes work great is the idea behind it and how well it’s executed.” Among the photographers whose work Saul championed are Nikolay Bakharev, Morton Bartlett, Eugene Bellocq, Andrew Bush, Sally Gall, Luigi Ghirri, Andrea Grützner, Sarah Anne Johnson, Adam Magyar, and Arne Svenson...

Seasons 1981 Photo Color Copier Print Photograph Museum Collected Art Xerography
Located in Surfside, FL
SEASONS (1981) This is for the single print listed here. (not the outside folder or title sheet) Title: Beachball. This one is hand signed and dated verso. Seasons explores the seasons of Man, Woman, Child, Civilization, Nature and Technology. First digital artwork purchased by the Metropolitan Museum. Date: 1980-1981 Medium: vintage color photocopy print. “I worked at The Metropolitan Museum in 1981, when they acquired [Lesley’s] SEASONS portfolio. We knew we wanted it, even though we didn’t have a category for it.” David Kiehl, Curator of Prints and Special Collections The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York City. Lesley Schiff (born 1951) is an American fine artist. Schiff studied painting at the Art Institute Chicago before developing her signature practice using color laser printers to create images. Her work is included in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Mead Art Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art and other major museums, corporate and private collections globally. Lesley Schiff revolutionized the photocopier from being an office tool to just another instrument in the artist's arsenal. Rather than addressing the tool in her work, Schiff instead uses the photocopier like a paintbrush to realize her vision. Once a painter, Schiff says: “I never intended to stop painting. I just decided to start painting with a modern tool. Working with the color laser printer keeps you in your culture. It's like America. Plugged in. Electronic. Direct." Painting with light, Schiff's body of work outlines a cycle of life: man, woman, child, civilization, nature, technology. More recent works challenge the viewer to understand the concept of eye-levels and perspectives, reinventing the way we see. Schiff's work was the Metropolitan Museum of Art's first digital acquisition, and most recently, was featured at the Whitney Museum of American Art in "Experiments in Electrostatics". She uses a color laser printer “like a paintbrush” to create her art. She has said about her work and her tool: “I never intended to stop painting. I just decided to start painting with a modern tool. Working with the color laser printer keeps you in your culture. It's like America. Plugged in. Electronic. Direct—but no matter how hi-tech my tools become, I’m a painter, but instead of painting with oils, I paint with light. The Whitney Museum will show Lesley Schiff's pioneering SEASONS portfolio in its entirety. Many prominent collections acquired SEASONS as their first digital artwork. She participated in the Punk Art show in the 1970's. Her work kind of relates to Fluxus and Dada. Leslie Schiff moved from Chicago to New York in the early 1970s. Much of her art involves collage and the Xerox photocopy machine. Her images are rooted in her personal psyche and have an intuitive meaning that is not always easily understood. In exhibitions, Xerox sheets are combined and displayed decoratively on the wall. Schiff has also created books; and made video and sound tapes. She was included in the seminal New York/New Wave 1981 exhibition show at MoMA PS1 along with Jean-Michel Basquiat, William S.Burroughs, David Byrne, Larry Clark, Crash (John Matos), Ronnie Cutrone, Brian Eno, Nan Goldin, Keith Haring, Ray Johnson, Joseph Kosuth, Robert Mapplethorpe, Kenny Scharf, Steven Sprouse, Andy Warhol and Lawrence Weiner. She did a “visual biography,” comprised of portraits of Bob Dylan—depicted at different ages, from his 20s to his 60s—illustrations of his lyrics, and images of iconic objects like his sunglasses and harmonica. Schiff collaborated with Matthew Carter...

Keith Haring Into 84 (set of 2 Haring Shafrazi announcements)
Located in NEW YORK, NY
'Keith Haring Painted Man'/Keith Haring Into 84: A set of 2 announcement cards for Keith Haring’s well-documented exhibition, 'Into 84' at Tony Shafrazi Gallery, New York, 1983. For this series Haring borrowed Jones' body — from head to toe — as the canvas to his work. A bodily canvas defined by much of the bold pictograms characteristic of Haring's artistic signature. Photos by Haring's long-time friend and collaborator Tseng Kwong Chi. Looks fantastic framed as a set. Off-set printed gallery announcements, 1983. Dimensions: 6 x 4 inches (applies to each individual). Good overall condition with well-preserved colors. Some surface creating to red card. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Further About: In 1983 Keith Haring teamed up with award-winning choreographer and dancer Bill T. Jones, founder of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company. Keith and Bill met in London in 1983 at a time when the graffiti artist was opening a major show at the Robert Fraser Gallery, and together they produced a series of exceptional collaborations in both performance and drawing. Keith Haring was an American artist and social activist known for his illustrative depictions of figures and symbols. His white chalk drawings could often been found on the blank poster marquees in New York’s public spaces and subways. “I don't think art is propaganda,” he once stated. “It should be something that liberates the soul, provokes the imagination and encourages people to go further. It celebrates humanity instead of manipulating it.” Born on May 4, 1958 in Reading, PA, he grew up in neighboring Kutztown, where he was inspired to draw from an early age by Walt Disney cartoons and his father who was an amateur cartoonist. After briefly studying commercial art in Pittsburgh, Haring came across a show of the works of Pierre Alechinksy and decided to pursue a career in fine art instead. He moved to New York in the late 1970s to attend the School of Visual Arts, and soon immersed himself in the city’s graffiti culture. By the mid-1980s, he had befriended fellow artists Andy Warhol, Kenny Scharf, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, and collaborated with celebrities like the singer Grace Jones. Diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in 1988, Haring’s prodigious career was brief, and he died of AIDS-related complications on February 16, 1990 at the age of 31. Before his death, Haring established the Keith Haring Foundation, a non-profit committed to raising awareness of the illness through art programing and community outreach. Throughout his career, Haring made his art widely available through the location of his murals, as well as through the Pop Shop—Haring's own storefront which he used to sell his memorabilia. The artist’s mural Crack is Wack (1986), can still be seen today on a retaining wall along FDR Drive in Manhattan. Haring’s works can be found in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.
