Christine So
June Wild Grass (hand-printed botanical cyanotype, 18 x 36 inches)

2021

About the Item

This long narrow monotype was made by carefully arranging hundreds of individual blades of fresh-cut native Californian wild grass. The species of tall marsh grass is called Gray Rush or the latin name juncus patens. It is native to Northern California and grows in local wetlands. If not cut back, it it would grow over 4 feet tall. Although these look like an etching or block print, they are cyanotypes, a type of 19th century cameraless photography also known as blueprints or sun prints. No ink or paint was involved and no photo negative either. Every one of Christine So's botanical cyanotypes is an entirely unique monotype as the cut plants are laid by hand in that exact composition only once and discarded after they wilt. There is no etched plate, carved block, no ink or printing press. NOTE: All my botanical cyanotypes are made from freshly cut living plants, not dried pressed flowers. Occasionally an insect that lived in those plants ends up as part of the print. There is a tiny brown spot ( 1/8" x 3/8") in the dark blue area around 5 inches down from the top left edge of the print. That is a stain from an insect that was hiding inside the tiny wildflowers under the glass during printing. Fortunately it is in the dark blue area of a very intricate pattern, but I have priced this cyanotype print $50 less than the other similar 18 x 36" print "June Breeze". When printing in sunlight, I cannot open the glass and move or remove anything during exposure to light or it will completely ruin the sun print just as if you opened the back of an analog camera while in sunlight. Edges are straight-cut. Not deckled edges. Printed on 100% cotton acid free watercolor paper. Unframed. Ships rolled in a tube. Signed on the back by the artist. SHIPPING: Free regular ground shipping to United States.

Cyanotypes were then made famous by Anna Atkins, considered the first female photographer. Inspired by nature, we feel the need to look back at a craft that is handmade, analogue, and using an all-natural light source: the sun. Our cyanotypes are made by coating high-quality Italian watercolor paper with a light-sensitive emulsion. We then expose it in direct sunlight for several minutes using a photo negative to get the best image quality. Finally, the print is washed and fixed with water to stop the reaction and prevent fading. What you get is an amazing, royal blue image...
