About the Item

Frank Stella (Whitney Museum Exhibited) Shards IVA (Axsom 151), 1982 Lithograph & Silkscreen on Arches Cover Paper (Whitney Museum exhibition label verso of frame) 45 1/2 × 39 1/4 inches Signed and numbered 40/49 in graphite on the front. There were also 10 Artist's Proofs Frame included: held in original vintage frame with original labels from the Whitney Museum and the renowned Richard Gray gallery Publisher: Petersburg Press, New York Fully referenced in the catalogue raisonne of Frank Stella's prints. (Axsom, 151, Hudson Hills Press, 1983, Jordan Schnitzer catalogue raisonne) as well as the Whitney exhibition catalogue. Exhibited at Frank Stella's Print Retrospective "Frank Stella Prints 1967-1982", Whitney Museum of American Art, New York City, 1983 (same work) Special opportunity to acquire Whitney Museum exhibited and catalogued Frank Stella work - with original Whitney Museum label. (How cool is that?) Indeed, this is the very work that was featured at the monumental 1983 print retrospective at the Whitney Museum of 20th Century master artist-scholar Frank Stella. This work bears the original Whitney museum and Richard Gray gallery labels on the verso. It is also featured in the catalogue that accompanied this historic Stella museum retrospective. We have not found any another Stella prints from that Whitney museum exhibition come to market. This is especially historic as it was from his first Whitney Museum print retrospective -- at the old upper East Side building before the Whitney moved to the meat packing district in downtown Manhattan. A highly collectible piece with unique and important provenance: exhibited in the early 1980s for the much touted print retrospective: "Frank Stella Prints 1967-1982" at the (original) Whitney. This screenprint and offset lithograph was made in 44 runs from 37 plates and 3 screens - same elements as Shards IV, with the addition of 11 plates and 2 screens. It is sold framed the museum and gallery labels verso and and measures 46 inches (vertical) by 40.5 inches (horizontal). The sheet itself measures 45.5 inches by 39.25 inches. Special opportunity for a true Frank Stella collector - who has to have it, because how cool is that?

The Dayton's Bag: Two original abstract lithographs plate signed double sided
By Frank Stella
Located in New York, NY
Frank Stella The Dayton's Bag, 1984 Two (2) separate offset lithographs: one on each side of a mixed media paper shopping bag 18 1/2 × 16 × 4 inches Plate signed "Frank Stella '84" twice: once on each side of the bag (see photos) This paper shopping bag with two different color offset lithographs (one on each side) was created by Frank Stella along with his longtime publisher Tyler Graphics. The work is plate signed Frank Stella on the top of each side, and each side bears the printed text, "Dayton's Salutes the Opening of Walker Art Center's New Galleries. Premiere Exhibition Selections from Tyler Graphics, 23 September '84 to 17 May '85." This elegant work, produced with the highest quality lithography by Frank Stella at Tyler Graphics, was created in a limited quantity solely for VIP collectors at that one day's event as it was a true one-off creation. Not too many of them have survived a quarter century on, and rarely in such good condition. Not too many people you know can boast that they possess a Frank Stella shopping bag. Note that this listing is for one two sided shopping bag, each side with a different color lithograph - so it's actually two Frank Stella lithographs...
