About the Item
Harold Town (1924-1990) remains one of the most accomplished and fascinating characters from the "Painters Eleven" group.
While Town coined the group's name (based on the number of artists who simply attended their first meeting) his output was diverse, ever-changing and not restricted to painting.
Somewhat ironically, Town's first significant body of work, which established his reputation, was a group of monotypes - which he called "Single Autographic Prints"
Town was introduced to lithography by fellow Painters Eleven member Oscar Cahen.
The "Single Autographic Prints" were first exhibited in 1954. Two years later the National Gallery of Canada would successfully nominate Town to represent the nation at the Venice Biennale.
By the end of the decade Town received international accolades for these works and had become one of the most admired artists in Canada.
This complex mauve-hued example of a "Single Autographic Print" is Harold Town at his best; layered, rich colors creating a hypnotic inimitable abstract surface. This type of SAP is particularly sought-after as it is one of the earliest and features a distinct graphic collage-like composition made up of blocky shapes. Such elements would become signatures in Town's oeuvre.

Nevelson is renowned for her mysterious and complex artworks. She was an active printmaker, experimenting with different techniques and approaches while working with some of the best print-making studios in the United States and Italy.
Many of the leading, ground-breaking American abstract artists experienced success in post-war Europe. Nevelson was notably well-embraced in Italy arguably because of parallels to Arte Povera in her work. She had an important and enduring connection to Italy, beginning with representing America at the Venice Biennale in 1962. Nevelson would then exhibit at the legendary Studio Marconi in Milan during the succeeding decades. This fruitful relationship led Nevelson to start working with Italian printmakers during the 1970s.
This impressive aquatint is a paradigm of both the era and Nevelson's later printmaking, notable for its use of metallic elements, color, and collage. This work features unexpected shades of magenta, lime green, and rust, which punctuate her signature monochromatic black forms that sweep the surface of the page creating an intriguing architectural form.
