1976 surrealist lithograph on paper titled "backwards facing" by Jim Crabb (American, b. 1947). This piece resembles a surreal landscape, with various biomorphic objects floating in the sky. Some of them resemble coral, growing vertically. Others look like microscopic organisms, with stringy tails. In this piece there appear to be cracks or portals in the landscape.

Jim Crabb is a painter and printmaker, was born in Merced, California. He received his M.A. in printmaking and B.A. in painting at San Jose State, and an A.A. in Fine Arts at San Jose City College. He studied with Geoffrey Bowman, John Hunter, Will Nelson, Al Barella, and Bruce Conner.
Crabb's work has been included in numerous group exhibitions, including American Drawings in Black and White: 1970-1980, at the Brooklyn Museum, the Twenty-first National Print Exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum, as well as at the Redding Museum of Art, the San Jose Council of the Arts, the Basel Art Fair in Switzerland, 1976, and Georgia State University. Public collections holding Crabb's work include the Brooklyn Museum in New York, Wichita Art Museum in Kansas, the Redding Art Museum, the Crocker Museum, and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, California.

About the Artist: Wifredo Lam was an Afro-Cuban artist best known for his unique Surrealist aesthetic that combined European artistic movements with the imagery of his native country. “I responded always to the presence of factors that emanated from our history and our geography, tropical flowers, and black culture,” Lam once said. In one of his most famous paintings, The Jungle (1943), these various influences are melded together, onto a single large-scale canvas. Born Wifredo Oscar de la Concepción Lam y Castilla on December 8, 1902 in Sagua la Grande, Cuba, the painter moved to Madrid, Spain in 1923 to study with Fernando Álvarez de Sotomayor, who had been the teacher of famed Surrealist Salvador Dalí. Lam moved to Paris after seeing an exhibition of Pablo Picasso’s work in Spain. Having arrived in Paris, he introduced himself to Picasso who subsequently showed Lam his collection of primitive artworks...
