About the Item

Joan Miró Barcelona, 1972-1973 is an in depth extraction of the artist’s psyche and imagination. As a Surrealist, Miró uses automatic drawing, where the hand is allowed to move freely and express in random intervals and shapes. There is a sense of impulsive spontaneity that breaks the rhythm of the surface. He does this by drawing in a sharp eye that pierces the sky, with which breaks up the surface. The spatial organization is harmoniously broken up in pieces throughout, while the sudden splotches of colors give markers for the wandering eye. As part of the audience we cannot help ourselves but be engulfed by the powerful black lines fighting against the lighter background, the intense yet charming liberty of the shapes, or the incredible spatial organization expressed all throughout. Although Miró does not use a wide spectrum of color, the absence of it creates a dictation of the informal—a common feat Surrealists tried to depict unceremoniously. This work of art is an inspiring one that confronts the viewer with abrupt spontaneity and instantly refreshes one’s soul. Created in 1972-1973, this color etching, aquatint, and carborundum on Guarro paper is hand-signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 – Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower right and numbered from the edition of 50 in pencil in the lower left. This work was printed by J. J. Torralba, Barcelona and published by Sala Gaspar, Barcelona. This work is from a series of 13 engravings in etching, aquatint and carborundum gathered together in a portfolio.
