About the Item

The portrayal of gardens and parks, along with the exploration of plant growth and morphology, has assumed a vital role in the artistic realm of Paul Klee. The artist himself, in his own words, emphasized the significance of "Dialogue with nature" as a guiding principle. Within the vast expanse of nature, Klee viewed himself not only as a human being but also as an embodiment of nature—an integral component intricately woven into the fabric of the natural world. In this lithograph dated 1926 and titled “Botanischer Garten, Abteintung der Palmenpflanzen”, Klee presents a plate of a botanical study, with its garden, flowers, and pavilion, drawing the viewer into his investigations of plant structures, morphological intricacies, and its wondrous processes of transformation. This lithograph comes from the small edition published by Klee's son, Felix Paul Klee. Klee authorized the edition shortly before his death in 1940, but the printing of the edition was delayed until 1946 because of World War II. The edition was printed under the strict supervision of Felix Paul Klee. Mariabruna Fabrizi wrote about this specific Paul Klee's work: In the multiple explorations of form and composition by German-Swiss artist Paul Klee, a special place is occupied by works where the line is the main protagonist. In a famous quote, the artist describes the line as “a dot that went for a walk” underlining the dynamic nature of the line as the means to conduct the human eye across the space of a painting or a drawing. In the second volume of the collection of his Bauhaus lessons Infinite natural history (Band 2: Unendliche Naturgeschichte, first published in 1946) Klee addresses the analogy of pictorial form with natural processes, introducing how lines in a composition are submitted to specific logic of growth and progression. He further compares the organizational systems of plants to the linear organizations in a drawing. Paul Klee (1879-1940) was a Swiss-born German artist. There are many detailed biographies and studies of him, considered one of the essential artists of the 20th century. Klee has been associated with Expressionism, Cubism, Futurism, Surrealism, and Abstraction, but his art is difficult to classify. He generally worked in isolation from his peers and interpreted new art trends in his own way. He was inventive in his methods and techniques. His unique style bridged the gap between the figurative and the abstract, exploring the realms of imagination and symbolism. Klee's extensive travels and exposure to different cultures influenced his art, resulting in a fusion of diverse artistic traditions. His works can be found in many of the world's most important museums and private collections.
