About the Item

Medium: Original Lithographic Poster, 1974 Classic Poster Paper - Perfect Condition A+ This original composition used exactly the same plates for the poster and for the Lithograph #86 in the catalog of Pierre Soulages' graphic works. The poster was used for an exhibition of Soulages' works at the Musée Dynamique in Dakar in 1974. Unfortunately in 1988, the museum was controversially closed and the building repurposed by the Senegalese government as a courthouse. Soulages was inspired by painters such as Picasso and Cézanne very early on. His powerful canvases are devoid of any reference to nature, relying on their rhythmic partition of the surface and on the relationship between forms and the textures of the paint to create what some critics described as "melodies" or "symphonies" of space. Using just one color to create a stark contrast against the white background, Soulages refuses to commit himself to painting color harmonies. Ed. 800. + 85 (signed and numbered on Arches Paper). Ref. BNF #86.

Modulor by Le Corbusier, 1962 - Original Lithograph Poster
By Le Corbusier
Located in New York, NY
Artist: Le Corbusier Medium: Original Lithograph, 1956/62 Dimensions: 29 x 21.5 in, 73.7 x 54.6 cm Arches Paper with Mourlot watermark - Excellent condition A Le Corbusier’s relationship with Mourlot started as early as the mid thirties. The artist was always interested in editions of all sorts, whether furniture, tablewear or lithographic. It all related to a new modern way of life and intrinsic to his architecture. In fact, the famous Modulor is the iconic image in Le Corbusier’s work as it is the basis for his architectural work. As in many other cases, the Master’s philosophy was very democratic and he felt that while a few proofs should be signed, the others should be signed directly in the plate so that it could be affordable to as many people as possible. He wanted not only collectors, but regular home owners to have access to an artwork of quality but reasonably priced, just as he wanted them to afford his furniture designs. It was all about Modernity ushering a brave new world. This rare Le Corbusier lithograph...

1987 original exhibitino poster by Pierre Soulages - Artcurial Paris
By Pierre Soulages
Located in PARIS, FR
In 1987, the renowned French artist Pierre Soulages showcased his work in an exhibition titled Estampes at Artcurial in Paris, marking a significant moment in his long career. The exhibition, which focused on Soulages' prints, was accompanied by an original poster that has since become a celebrated piece of art in its own right, capturing the essence of his distinctive style. Pierre Soulages, known for his groundbreaking work with black, revolutionized the way the color was used in contemporary art. His series of works referred to as "noir-lumiere" (black light) explored the interplay of light and dark, where the use of black paint became an instrument for creating dynamic surfaces full of texture and depth. Throughout his career, Soulages was deeply interested in the idea of the materiality of paint itself and how it could be manipulated to reflect light, which led him to develop an innovative approach to printmaking. The Estampes exhibition at Artcurial focused specifically on Soulages' prints, offering a closer look at his exploration of graphic arts. This body of work was crucial in understanding the breadth of his artistic practice. Soulages' prints, much like his paintings, were not merely reproductions of his earlier works; they were unique pieces that engaged with the act of creating marks on paper, emphasizing texture and form in a way that was completely aligned with his larger body of work. The original exhibition poster designed for Estampes encapsulated the essence of Soulages’ philosophy. Though the poster’s design reflects the focus on printmaking, it also draws from his signature approach to texture and abstraction. The boldness of Soulages’ work, whether in painting or print, is often characterized by a sense of energy and movement, as he manipulates the surface of the material to evoke both light and shadow. The 1987 poster...
